Sir Patrick Stewart was raised in a violent household, where he witnessed his father routinely beat his mother, and watched as the authorities did nothing. Stewart’s experiences as a child greatly influenced his ideological beliefs and he’s spent much of his career speaking out against domestic violence. In the video above, he calls on men to take responsibility for violence against women and talks about his work with Amensty International.

It’s not rare for a man to be a victim of DV. Men just don’t report it.

My great uncle fought in WWII, he also suffered from PTSD and never got psychiatric treatment for it.

When I was little, my mother slammed the door on me, seemingly in pure frustration I guess. And my Sister threw a soda can at my forehead, leaving a scar. Weather man or woman, hurting someone is a demonic, and wicked action. Just treat people how you want to be treated.

Domestic violence against men accounts for 33% in countries such as Australia, USA and the UK etc, hardly what I would consider 'so rare!' Inform yourself

Very true, unfortunately violence against men by women are rarely reported, in most cases men are mocked and laughted at if they report to be abused by women. I guess society is ok with that.

I simply do not understand why more isn’t being done to address the rift that is widening between men and women in western society. Doesn’t anyone realize that this problem has grave consequences for all the countries in the West, chief among them is how it relates to national security. We are permitting our respective societies to disintegrate because we are allowing minority viewpoints to dictate the way we should live our lives. The bond between men and women is natural and should be cherished and anyone not working to that end is nothing less than a traitor to his or her country.

God bless him for being so open about his family experience with PTSD but shame on him for perpetuating the harmful myth that domestic violence against men is rare. He must have stopped reading the statistics in 1979. We have decades of data to prove that women's violence against men is common.

Men do more physical damage and they also call the police less often. I wish Patrick Stewart would stick to what he knows.

He grew up with domestic violence, his father suffered shell shock in WW2 (now known as PTSD) and frequently beat his wife. Patrick Stewart and his brother witnessed this all too often.

@@sbalfre - Yes, all that is true. Indeed, Stewart is an expert on his own experience and should be listened to as such. However, the objective statistics on domestic violence, even without adjusting for underreporting by men, show the rate of violence by women to be significant and not an “extremely rare” phenomenon. There are studies showing the rates of violence by women toward men being higher (as high as 70% in a Harvard study that was done around 2010-11). The rates of physical violence by girls rose significantly in 80-90’s and leveled off a bit in the 2000’s though it remains a significant problem. The rates of violence among same-sex female couples are around the same as male to female violence intimate partner violence. That being said, it is really important to note that on average (colloquially speaking) the severity of violence and life consequences of violence committed by men seem to be much more severe. A public call to action by a figure like Stewart is a good thing. Mischaracterizing the nature of the problem perpetuates a strongly held stereotype and that is not so useful. That “men are almost exclusively responsible for domestic violence” is stereotype I held as a deep belief for most of my life. I “knew” it with the same certainty I know “that is a quarter.” A development in my career then forced me to study the issue of domestic violence in-depth, and I can tell you I did not accept the validity of the data for quite a while. It was really disconcerting. The type of mischaracterization Stewart makes can affect the way that society moves to abate the issue and mobilize resources to help those affected. As an exercise try googling the rate of domestic or intimate partner violence committed by women. I think you will find it difficult to even find a useful statistic. Even official reports will make statements such as “most domestic violence is committed by men” without stating the data gathered show a rate of 30-40% or more committed by women. I believe we cannot adequately address domestic violence without understanding that boys and girls who witness domestic violence in their homes are affected by it and are more likely to engage in the same sort of behavior as adults. This is true weather the violence is perpetrated by a male or female. The same is true of child abuse. It is not sufficient to just change men’s behavior. The next generation who will become men are learning from both men and women.

29 dislikes are done by the violators who create, advocate or ignore violence. Patrick Stewart isn't alone in this there are men who are tired of this shit. It's too bad that #MeToo and Feminist movements overlook these advocates and protectors of boys, girls and women. As someone who survived countless abuse and violence throughout my life, mainly due to being disabled, I had experienced some kindness from boys and men growing up. To tell you the truth I had suffered more at the hands of family members and people I know than from strangers. 😿 Being female is hard, but it's no where near as terrifying, complicating and difficult as being born disabled and that has no sex, gender or whathaveyou. You have disabilities and or disorders... And you're treated like you don't matter or exist. The abuse and violations are severely overlooked. Forgotten. You have no worth or value. It is why I give my students, my babies, all the attention I can give. I want them to know with me they won't be forgotten.

The dislikes comes from the disaprouval that perpetrators are mainly males. In fact domestic violence is instigated by women in 70% of cases. Victims of such behaviors must be helped and they are men, women and children. It's wrong to say it's 'a man problem'.

It's nice to hear someone talk about PTSD, veterans and DV, but it's sad to hear DV against men downplayed. There's already enough stigma for men coming forwards to say they're being abused and this video doesn't help in that respect. What a shame.
@buckybone89

It's downplayed because most DV against men is from other men...in the end, it's still a male violence problem.

A bit of an anecdote I know but a few weeks ago a woman who lives at my flat got arrested for assault just for tapping her boyfriend on the shoulder in the police's presence (he dropped the charges obviously). I think that does show that things changing in that regard.

Slashy Stabby Channel that is a separate problem. It is a real, pervasive, truly destructive problem but we have to address domestic abuse in a comprehensive way but people are dying, being brutalized, raped, and tormented and we need to take that as seriously as it is. It's destructive to detract from the conversation in that way. What we can say is, domestic abuse as a whole is a problem and we need to address all of its facets. A wise man proportions his beliefs to the evidence, and in this case it's evident that abuse against women by men is a bigger more serious problem.

I disagree with you, Sir Patrick. You have a very old view of domestic violence and are very colored by your own personal experiences. That’s not good enough.
