Bam Margera has been going through a lot of ups and downs for the past couple years. But his situation is very complicated. Initially when I looked at his "downward spiral" I thought he was just being a reckless individual his whole life, but I failed to see the other side of the story.. this video looks at the other side.

As someone who was kicked out of rehab for a no reason and my grandma threatened to sue so we got the money back. I can 100% say they will kick you out and make you start all over. It's not about getting people clean, it's about charging them a minium 10k. All they want are those big fat "new patient" payments they charge. That isn't just inpatient facilities that's also out patient and ESPECIALLY maintenance medication facilities. I got off heroin 12 years ago and met my wife in out patient, we are still together and still clean. Almost everyone we knew in the program went back to drugs and the two of us who were "not following the suggestions of dating while in your first 90 days" are married, own a home, we got her kids finished with high school and college and are now proud grandparents(step for me as I'm only 38). So a big percentage of the rehab industry are scammers and you really have to do your research before you commit to anyone or anything. Easier said than done as youre probably at your most desperate and vulnerable but take it one day at a time and it will be decades of cleanliness for you too anyone out there who's struggling.

I think you had the chance to have a supportive wife, and you both went through addiction and ended up sober at (i assume) nearly the same time. Having supportive relatives can be a GREAAAAT help, even more if they really know whats what w/ addictions. Not saying you couldnt do it on your own, i'm sure you have a strong mind, but this might'have helped you a lot

‼️I'm so sorry that happened to you. Its completely messed up how people treat addicts like they're monsters. And honestly whatever people have to do to get through the day, whatever it takes to survive to see another day. Who am I to tell them oh you shouldn't take drugs or you shouldn't drink if that helps them?? Yeah it's not a healthy lifestyle but eating junk food isn't a healthy lifestyle and that destroys the lives of other people too when you die of a heart attack at 35. Yet no one treats those people who are addicted to junk food like they are monsters who should feel guilty about their behavior. They are allowed to destroy their own lives in peace. And that's what everyone should let them do. This is free will and no one should lose their free will except for the most heinous of crimes. Being self-destructive isn't enough to take away free will. Its just not. It's wrong and I feel so sad that everyone is emotionally blackmailing him and emotionally black mailed you and guilting him and threatening him into doing what THEY want him to do, and forcing him to live how THEY want him to live. They may have good intentions but some of the most terrible and cruel things that destroy people's lives are done with the best of intentions. What's the point of living without free will. His family are bad people, his wife is a bad person, everyone in this story is a bad person, doesn't matter what their intentions are. A life without Free Will isn't worth living.

Big congrats to you, your wife, and your family. IMO you’re a rare case. But you’re 10000% right that they try to kick you out for no reason. I’ve seen countless ppl get thrown out of maintenance therapy on 120mg+ of methadone w/ zero detox for some ridiculous reason… most of those ppl had to go back to opiates as the withdrawals from MMT are way worse than H. The federal guidelines for opening MMT places are very minimal. SAMHSA guidelines have allowed scammers to open clinics. I went to one that was finally shutdown by the feds. The owner was stealing methadone and keeping it in her house. A dosing nurse was double charging patients and keeping the 2nd dose for herself. It’s ridiculous that we jump thru all these hoops and mental blocks to even CONSIDER getting treatment. But once we’re in treatment, they make us do all kinds of nonsense and if we slip up even a bit- we’re forced out onto the streets. Especially nowadays when a single relapse could easily equal your death… I’m so glad I almost have 10 years sober from hard drugs. (Not giving up cannabis) Again, biggest congrats to you and your wife. This random stranger is proud of ya! Wishing you the absolute best on your journeys ☺️

A big issue with Bam is that he suffers from behavioral problems. So when he goes into rehabs he has to have a facility that specializes in dual diagnoses that addresses those behavioral issues. So not only does he have to sober up and maintain sobriety, but he also has to adhere to a lot of rules and promote healthy routines to be allowed to stay at those facilities. That’s why he gets kicked out of so many places. He’ll never maintain a healthy lifestyle if he doesn’t address the underlying stuff. putting him on a lot of medication also isn’t going to fix the problem.

Why is it up to anyone besides Bam if he decides to get help or not? Let's just say that someone (a stranger) takes complete control over your life, family, money, and leaves you with no say over your own life. How would that make you WANT to get better? The way people are seeing this as "ok" is scary to me. They took his constitutional rights away. They gave those rights to a strange woman with experimental drug abuse treatment. They then keep him away from his son and are using his son to hold him hostage. I love seeing people getting help, but I'm completely against someone taking complete control over others lives.

Can confirm you can be kicked out of rehab for lack of hygiene because it’s not only about getting sober but using it to better yourself. Double edged sword, agreed, but if of one thing I am certain, is that this contract should at least be up for review, or annual cancelling, instead of just hiding your pop-star daughter in your basement for 13 years as if she was a personal pay-pig. The system is really broken. Even for regular (non-rich, non-celebrity) people, it is shockingly easy to get a conservatorship. Keeping someone off their preferred drug while keeping them in a facility is nothing especially when jail is hanging over their head if they walk

I've been thru all of this first hand. Rehabs are weird and though everyone thought they were doing what was best for him, it wasn't. Bam has to come to the realization and want to get sober for himself. I bet his family is stressing about money too. So they want to get him healthy, but just went about it the wrong way. Psyc meds are terrible. The rehabs fully embrace the pharmaceutical industry. So they probably put him on way too much crap and it is a big reason he can't get a grip. So sad to hear. To Bam: Take it one day at a time brother. Find your why and start building a foundation of good habits. Will it be hard...Yes, but you can do it. There's a beautiful life out there waiting for you. I can’t tell you anything about Bams situation, but I can tell you this 100% happens to everyday people that don’t have a platform like his. It goes like this, they create a mental health organization. Typically also dealing with physical disabilities as well. With funding they’ll secure dozens of houses in a low income area that they rehab with nonprofit money. Also grabbing a space that can serve as a day center. Scouring not just for families that can no longer deal but literally plugged into pysch wards ready to “accommodate” people with housing etc. They secure the conservatorship just the same. Control your movement and finances fully, in most cases disability income. Put you up as roommates in said homes regardless of peoples issues. Lock you in said contract and keep you on meds basically forever. No they don’t get millionaires but they operate in numbers. So one organization may house 50-100 disabled people throughout a city easily.

As somebody that battled addiction between 2010-2020 I have never seen or heard of anything like this. There is “halfway” houses that help people with a place to live and get a job for 4-12 months after rehab or jail. What your strictly talking about is people with major mental disorders, I’m not sure Bam even falls in that category. All that crap they prescribe you is worse than the drugs on the streets. Taking 1 SSRI that helps your brain get the chemicals it needs from being ruined by drugs usually helps a lot. and maybe trazodone to help sleep is the most they should be giving out IMO.
@lostpelican1883
@lostpelican1883 Жыл бұрын
What I described in my comment is definitely not "strictly for severely mentally ill" people. Rehabs use a lot of very questionable tactics to keep people there as long as absolutely possible, including "conservatorship or jail" "Intervention or jail" or just straight up tellin your family you're "ON THE VERGE OF DEATH" (even if you actually, in fact, are not, but still have very real problems). Nearly every rehab and methadone clinic where I live tries to prescribe every single person high doses of antipsychotics and some methadone programs will threaten to kick you off for not taking them (even if you display visible, obvious negative side effects). Also, essentially the "no one gets turned away" means that no one isn't an addict either. (meaning a lot of local dual-diagnosis places will have patients that have admitted to smoking weed or something when they were seeking regular mental health treatment, only to be placed in a 12-step rehab with no mental health support beyond the antipsychotics , surrounded by withdrawing addicts). People with money or good insurance will be told they aren't ready to leave for odd reasons, people with medicare/medicaid will either be thrown to the streets in 4 or 28 days (or shuffled to another network rehab, often in a different city or state--- i saw someone do this for over 2 years). You also see people being "diagnosed" with very serious things like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Thing is, there are very specific tests for things like schizophrenia, not something that can be done in the 10-minute meeting with the rehab psychiatrist upon entry, or the occasional doctor you talk to at the methadone clinic. It's absurd. TLDR: The main thing is, once a person seeks addiction help, you have no say in your medical treatment. While I understand there are plenty of people who act like dickheads in rehab, there's also plenty of worthwhile criticism that gets ignored. Any complaints will be shut down as 'not accepting help'. I'm sure decent, ethical rehabs probably exist but I live in the midwest where opiates are anywhere and everywhere, and the local rehab industry definitely does not want that go away. $$$$

I was seeing a specialist for migraines and was on over a dozen different medications overall trying to find what worked to prevent and treat them. What Bam is dealing with and if he does have Bipolar, I imagine it is more tricky to get the meds right than my headache. The difference is that I STILL HAD BODILY AUTONOMY!! BAM DIDN'T. He didn't have a choice or control over his treatment. It was controlled by the movie studio contract that refused to allow him to get treatment for his ADHD and then under the control of LIMA as she was his guardian.

Dude, no doctor in their right mind would prescribe 18 meds at once, especially to someone who's just...sad. When he rattled off all those meds, i have no doubt hes taken those at different times, but putting someone on 3 different PTSD meds at one time is overkill. He either coerced them into writing those scripts, they didnt know about the other meds he was on, or hes lying about being on them all at once cause im tell you, no doctor would do that.

Zoloft(sertaline), Celexa (citalopram), and Lexapro (escitalopram) are all SSRI’s. Nobody would prescribe multiple SSRI’s simultaneously as every SSRI’s safety sheet warns not to due to risk of Serotonin Shock Syndrome occurring. It’s very common to be on one SSRI and then switch to another, as the goal is to identify which one a person’s body responds to best. It would make no sense to be on multiples simultaneously.

When Bam himself first described the incident he said he checked himself in because he knew he'd get popped on the drug test. Not because he felt guilty. I think there's a major distinction there. IDK, all the stuff about the conservatorship is horrible and I feel for the guy. But at the same time when you make a commitment that has a multi million dollar paycheck behind it and then break that commitment what do you expect to happen? "He's perscribed it" do you think Steve O wants to go through surgery without even taking tylenol these days?

He may have been prescribed 18 different ones during his time there but I highly doubt he was taking 18 a day. I recognize many of those meds as I also have psychiatric and addiction issues and most of them are PRN which means take as needed which means there could be many days he didn’t take it at all. Also, he lists like 5+ SSRIs. It makes no sense to be on that many all at once and no doctor has ever done that. What is common practice however is trying different SSRIs to find the one that works best for you. For example, I was prescribed Prozac but I didn’t like it so I changed to Celexa which worked much better for me. Also the only time I was ever prescribed a large number of meds at once was at the very start during detox since your body is going to war with itself, but that was only around 8-10 meds. Once you become more stable in 1-2 weeks, you shouldn’t need to take every single medication everyday. I would like to know the actual number of medications he took daily as I’m sure it would not add up to 18.

A major issue with so many of these garbage rehabs is their zero tolerance policies. I was at a place where one woman was kicked out for being caught with nail polish remover. I myself was kicked out of a program in jail because I was suicidal after a rough week and my underlying depression going untreated. That same program kicked out people for “not sharing enough” all the time as well. I have so many stories about the BS policies of many of these places. I’ve been part of a guardianship a “medical” one and a conservative ship I was a heroin addict and they hired some addiction specialist to control my life. I was sent to jail, forced to go to Rehab of “their” choice. If I refused any type of medication I was seen as non compliant and threatened by the judge I would be kicked out of treatment and charged and sent to jail. So I had to take whatever they wanted and I had to do whatever they wanted. I dealt with this for almost 2 years. Finally I decided that I would get clean to just get away. But it cost my insurance a ton of money and if you would see the amount of money I was charged for the rehab, charges, court costs, conservative ship it’s insane. For Steve o to say Lima did it and didn’t get paid is a lie. Do you know how much money is involved in these treatment centers? Without addicts they can’t exist, so they have to keep you there as long as they can and keep you under the influence of something that it’s a miracle to get away from. They would send people in with drugs on them and they would pass the drugs out to each other just so they could start your time over and keep that money funneling in. Not to mention a lot of these places get free state money because they’re state funded. I feel bad for Bam because I’ve been in his situation. I pray that he gets away from it all and can see the world through sober eyes.

Got into a sober house and stayed there for about a year. Been sober several years now with mostly therapy and a lot of self discipline/personal responsibility. But I saw the shenanigans and insurance milked sober houses like you describe, it was a wreck. It’s a cycle, so many people get to live for free at these sober houses, and milk their parents insurances, while still actively using. Then they’re all hooked on a buncha pharmaceuticals. I'm in the UK so our system is slightly different, but I have worked as a patient advocate for patients with dementia, mostly older people, and I have had a lot of experience with assessing capacity to make decisions about their care. We would often find that patients could, in fact, make decisions & have capacity - they just needed extra time, or tools, or specialised staff to assist them in understanding and communicating. Our whole ethos was to assume they had autonomy and do all we could to facilitate that, only restricting autonomy when all else failed, and usually only for one specific decision at a time unless it was very clear that things would not improve, and it was in the patients' best interests. However, even with a chronic progressive dementia, capacity could fluctuate and sometimes improve dramatically due to getting the right treatment or moving to a better environment, so I am not keen on long term guardianships even in those cases. But for younger people who do not have a severe progressive illness, it is inexcusable. I blame Bam's mom & dad for 99% of this. They let that kid run around like a maniac when he was barely in his 20's, destroying their house / property & beating the shit out of Phil. They not only allowed his behavior to continue, they encouraged it to ESCALATE IN THE NAME OF MONEY. April & Phil HAPPILY played the parts of "dopey" parents for Mtv, then alleged Bam's drinking/drug use would be "safer" if he got plastered AT HOME, so they let everyone to pile up on THEIR PROPERTY& stay high/drunk. April's had control of Bam's money for YEARS & I assure you she doesn't want it to run dry b/c she's used to the lifestyle Bam has provided them.

I think its a mixture of alot of things but his parents HAVE snapped on him many times about his behavior. They didnt want to enable it. In fact theres a video floating around with Phil telling bam how disappointed he was in him and that he doesnt want him to turn into one of those rich folks that lets fame destroy his life. Eventually, lost both of my parents with their deep concern about me. Now, I live all alone with all the side affects n regrets which will haunt me forever... As a 13 stint rehab connoisseur, it's not out of this world for them to say 'start over' after something that seems that small. There's all kinds of different treatment models, but I can see a place that is trying to instill personal responsibility, things that might seem normal that you do every day that us addicts may struggle with, it could happen. But also, money, you know. More money for them for starting him over at day 75, that's almost double. They're not all nice places. Good video mate. Also to anyone who cares, some of the medications mentioned were mentioned twice, as he referred to some with their generic name after using the brand name.

I have a close relative addicted to alcohol, heavier drugs, and has schizophrenia. He frequently goes to rehab and gets cleaned up for 2-24 months at a time, this has been going on for over 30 years. Rehab centers make A LOT of money from their patients. To kick someone out near their release date over pants, or a cigarette, is actually common. The patient will be transferred and yes: the sobriety date begins again citing "program guidelines" or "policy" but in actuality it's more revenue for the facility. In all fairness, Bam could have been told to change his pants because of the smells, and he did or said something inappropriate, nobody really knows, but why wait so long to suggest a patient clean themselves up? The cig incident sounds legit: patients have designated smoking areas for safety reasons, those doors lock, you cannot have fires anywhere nearby. If he flicked the butt and was confronted and acted out, they will send him packing and let another facility take the money. Rehabs are a billion dollar industry that are not focused so much on healthcare as they are on revenue.

I went to rehab for alcohol, I was depressed and alcohol was a symptom. I spent 3 days in detox where they were trying to feed me benzos. I watched the other people there and they looked like zombies. I took 1 and didn’t like the way it made me feel. They tried to give me another one at 3 am, 4 or 5 hours later. I refused, they hit me up every few hours trying to force me to take them. Here’s the kicker, I was there voluntarily, and here’s the difference. EVERY other person at the facility at that time was mandated, either by court, or by their attorney so they’d have a piece of paper for their court date. When they try to force the pills on you and you refuse, they threaten to kick you out, flirt with someone (strictly forbidden), they threaten to kick you out, try to skip, process session, a meeting, (AA/NA, of which there are 7 per day), they threaten to kick you out, smoke/vape in any other spot other than designated areas, they threaten to kick you out!! Getting kicked out when you’re court ordered or have a case is a huge thing, I was there for me, paid for by me! They tried to push pharma on me the entire time I was there under my own steam and their threats didn’t work!! I take Prevacid for heartburn and brought my own, they tried to not let me take it and replace it with prescription so they could sell it, I refused theirs and made them give me mine. Rehab is fast food medicine in practice and numbers are all that matter. I left after two weeks and haven’t looked back. The junkies, or H’s helped me pinpoint my issue and I dealt with it. I drink occasionally but nothing like I used to and pretty much only at functions, parties or social gatherings. Fuck the people that tried to take control of me and weaponize my issue and fuck the people that thought it was ok to turn it on and turn it off like Bam’s wife, I dealt with that too!! Bam has got to do it, but bam has got to do it for himself!!

I have persistent depressive disorder and in the past have had anxiety and substance abuse issues. Given that you might think benzos would be something I'd be into but I can't stand them. And I don't just mean as something to get high off of either. I don't like taking them at all. I also agree with your belief that minor tranquilizers and other psychiatric drugs are grossly over prescribed in general and that the way the health care system deals with addiction isn't very good. The entire treatment paradigm being rooted in Alcoholics Anonymous is a massive problem and needs to be addressed. They need to junk what they're doing and start over using science and actual empirical data this time. The least they could do is listen to the complaints of people like you and I. Instead they'll just say we both still need their program because we haven't done it and aren't completely abstinent from alcohol and drugs. Apparently the program can't fail; it can only be failed.

Having money makes people act like they like you, try to control you, get you killed so they can get your money, or just plain act jealous because you have money. The person with the money just becomes more of whatever they already were. If you were a generous giving person before having large sums of money most likely you'll be generous with the money. If you were greedy and selfish before the money you'll just be even more greedy and selfish with the money.

As someone whos had relatives deal with court ordered rehab I can say that in my opinion I don't think the courts or family members were trying to be malicious. Court systems often make it extremely lengthy, costly, and will send you back to square one as many times as possible to keep you in and making them money. I don't know if Lima's doing anything or not but her trying over and over to secure big name people for her treatment makes it seem like an attempt to extort or exploit one of her patients. Seems like a sad story of someone who's going through a nightmare of a court case and will probably never see the end

It’s the facilities that the treatment is at that’s making the money. If they know you have a secure source of income or have money you’re gone to stay there.

Except the person that did it stood to profit from the marketability of her program and company. She might not of been "paid" but that wasn't the goal here, the goal was awareness towards her brand which was worth MILLIONS.

Great work. The rehabilitation industry particularly in California and Florida is so unbelievably corrupt. There are better options, everywhere.

They are ALL the same! There is no such thing as voluntary signing yourself in..yes you can, but you need a doctors order to be released!! People don’t understand that small concept and rack up problems and their medications 😢
