I personally feel that society (particularly American society) was a bit easier going during his era so we laughed at stupid shit and were able to be okay with it. Now we live in a perpetually online era where most people are too pessimistic to enjoy a guy going on stage and telling stories the way he did. Sure he didn’t have a traditional set up and punch line but it was the delivery that we loved. It was goofy and energetic and that kind of silly juxtaposition with everyday life was a nice disconnect. Mind you if I go back and watch his stuff now, I probably wouldn’t laugh but that’s because I along with society have changed.
