Today we are in Dyersburg, Tennessee, and will be flying to Camden while we discuss and find the site of the March 5, 1963 plane crash that killed American country music performers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, and Hawkshaw Hawkins along with the pilot Randy Hughes.
They were flying an aircraft that was a three-year-old PA-24-250 Comanche four-seat, light, single-engine airplane manufactured in 1960 by Piper Aircraft. Serial Number 24-2144 Registered as N7000P.
We are back in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and flying the Cessna Grand Caravan 208B.

Today they have to be instrument rated, especially if they're flying at night, or in poor weather conditions. If not, they can only fly up to 50 miles, during the day in clear weather. Of course, that doesn't stop wealthy, entitled types who own their own planes, like the late JFK, Jr. did.

I fly through Flight Sim Steam version which I like a lot. I 'flew' this last flight of hers, using the NTSB accident report simulating as close as I could, the weather, time of flight, a Mooney as it was the only 4-seat, low wing airplane in my stable at the time and used ONLY the flight technology of the day (no GPS and stayed behind the panel the whole flight--no external views). Trying to fly as a VFR pilot would, I ended up 'scud running' in the dark and indeed, almost crashed near the same location as they did! I saw a hilltop with treetops coming at me out of the gloom, pulled up at the last second, said to myself, "Screw this" and made my way to the Benton Co. airport, 0M4, Camden and landed there. I did not feel the need to go on to Nashville as they did not make it. Very frightening and sobering flight, even as a simulation! I later noticed that the faint lines of elevation on the sectional chart suggested rough terrain (hills and 'hollers') between Bruceton and Camden. I was trying to make the Tennesse River as Hughes expected to. No dice. Nice version of this documentary. Thank you. May I respectfully suggest, however, that you get rid of the cartoon character as it inappropriately suggests cuteness to a tragic story. Looking forward to more of your videos. Thanks again.

Roger Peterson's decision to proceed showed poor judgement when a simple, safe choice was available: wait until daybreak. The decision by Randy Hughes to proceed was inexcusable; it was much clearer than to Peterson that the weather was a grave threat to the safety of the flight. Moreover, they had the offer of free accomodation overnight. The fact they only had a short distance to go wasn't the point. If the weather closed in and he lost visual reference, they were sunk. All they were doing then was making work for undertakers. Maybe this could become a new safety motto for aviation: Don't make work for undertakers.

It made me feel better knowing that on that very day of the flight.. Patsy was asked if she would rather go with her friends Dottie and her husband in a car (which would have taken longer, but more safe) cause the weather that day wasn't great for flying,.. yet Patsy declined and made the statement "when it's my time to go, it's my time to go!" Patsy Cline also had a premonition that she would die at a young age!

awesome video! Really puts a lot of things into perspective. being a Patsy Cline nut, i wanted to share a little about the plane crash's discovery... Now, as you stated, nobody had given up hope as to searching or waiting for the group to arrive home. By dawn of March 5th, a young law enforcement officer by the name of Jerry Phifer and Tennessee Highway Patrolman Troy Odle had received a call from a farmer named William Jeffrey Hollingsworth in the town of Camden, TN. in rural Benton county. He relayed to dispatch that he had heard a possible low-flying aircraft and that they heard "a motor sputtering, then it quit followed by a dull crash" presumably on the back of their property. That morning Hollingsworth and his son Jeners went to explore their property and found what would be the beginning of the plane's course of impact. Phifer and Odle had finally arrived and the four went to investigate further in the early morning mist and fog. First, they noticed a broken, yellow airplane wing hanging in the top of a tree surrounded by trees with their tops clipped off. they followed the wooded area downhill leading to a hollow which was absolutely littered with debris. Phifer stated that twisted metal and debris from the plane was scattered downhill about 300 to 400 feet. Phifer recalled seeing broken guitars, destroyed amplifiers, and packs of Maple guitar strings in the wreckage, as well as muddy cowboy hats and studded rhinestone suits, which belonged to the musicians, scattered through the trees and branches. They discovered the plane's engine which bore a 5 foot hole in the ground and was filled with rain water from the night previous. They concluded that the plane crashed nose down based on the engine's discovery, and that there was no fire due to the heavy rainfall. Phifer also stated that the chances of survival were very slim to nil, so they bagan searching for whole bodies throughout the wreckage. The men combing through the wreck were only discovering bits and pieces of flesh and severed limbs which were also embedded in the trees, as well as debris covered in blood and fuel from the plane. He said that the most of anyone they found was Cline. She was thrown across the far end of the area and was wedged underneath a log. He stated that her torso was almost intact and that she was recognizable by her long, dark hair. He also added that they had found one of her feet, which had been broken off at the ankle, and was wedged in the fork of a tree. The nail polish on the toes gave away that the severed limb belonged to Cline. In a book i had read, it stated that Cline may have been missing an arm as well as a leg, and had severe damage to the back of her skull, but none of that is 100% proven as far as i can tell. Odle said in a television interview that "it was the worst thing I ever saw. And I've seen some pretty bad ones i thought... All through this hollow was twisted wreckage, debris, and body parts... it was a ghastly sight." Referring back to Phifer, he recalled hundreds of people, "fans", arriving at the scene and walking away with scavenged pieces of plane debris, and other belongings of the 4 victims-- keeping them as 'momentos'. He himself walked away with the steering column from the plane, a cufflink presumably belonging to hawkshaw hawkins, as well as guitar strings and wires and the FAA report of the crash. Cline's tour fee, as well as most of her wardrobe was never recovered. Years later, three pairs of Cline's famous gold lamé slippers, a Confederate flag lighter, make up brush, studded belt, the plane's clock, and her wristwatch she was wearing at the time of the crash were all anonymously donated to a museum dedicated to Cline in Nashville. You can find Jerry Phifer's interview where he recalls the crash's discovery on youtube. Very morbid, but extremely interesting. Another thing i wanted to add was the fact that Patsy was having premonitions of an early death years prior to the plane crash, stating that she would not live passed 30. As you all may know, Cline had been involved in two near fatal car accidents. She once said to one of the Jordanaires after a recording session, "Honey, I've had two bad ones. The third will either be a charm or it'll kill me" referring to the prior car accidents. she also penned her will on Delta Airlines stationary in 1961 and oddly enough the last song she recorded was "I'll Sail My Ship Alone" in early 1963.

I don't understand why it's not illegal to fly with only sight training. Every celebrity plane crash report I have read shows they can't fly by instruments alone. The J.F.K JR crash, Buddy Holly, this one. I'm not a pilot but if I am noticing a pattern then the NTSB officials must see it as well. A flight I would like to suggest is Southern Airways flight 932 that killed the majority of the Marshall football team from Huntington, West Virginia
@DudeTours
@DudeTours 2 жыл бұрын
There are rules that dictate the circumstances and weather conditions that allow visual flight, but it is when a pilot pushes those limits and unintentionally end up in conditions where visibility is poor. I guess sometimes weather can change faster than anyone expects, and sometimes the decision to even attempt a VFR flight was the wrong call.

The plane which Patsy Cline crashed in, a three year old Piper PA-24-250 Comanche, Serial Number 24-2144 was equipped with a Lycoming O-540-A1D5 250 hp (190 kW) normally aspirated engine, turning a constant-speed propeller. The Comanche's maximum takeoff weight was 2,800 lb (1,300 kg) with a total fuel load of 60 US gallons (230 L), giving a range of 600 nautical miles at 75% power including a 45-minute reserve. The aircraft had passed its last FAA inspection on 19 April 1962. Around 6:07 pm, Randy Hughes, Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas, and Hawkshaw Hawkins took to the sky. But then, shortly after takeoff, Hughes became lost in the clouds. Flying blind, he entered a spiral and accelerated straight downward in a nose-dive into the ground at 6:20 P.M. on March 5, 1963. Inspection of the wreckage disclosed that the aircraft was intact and the engine was developing substantial power at initial impact with trees. There was no evidence of pre-impact failure or malfunction. Post-mortem examination of the pilot Randy Hughes disclosed nothing that could have been a factor in the accident.

Why did you use a high wing plane when she was in a low wing plane?
@DudeTours
@DudeTours 2 жыл бұрын
The intent was to find the locations, the plane itself was not meant to be part of that, but as many people have mentioned finding aircraft that are more appropriate to the story or location we are talking about would add to the video. I will put more thought into that since so many people have brought up the aircraft used with an assumption that it was supposed to be the one she (or others) were actually in. More and more aircraft are becoming available for the flight sim so we should be able to do a better job at that. Thanks for taking the time to give you input. 👍

Hi, the opinion about the animation was pretty prevalent. Early on the topics were going to be light hearted but the stories that turned out to be fairly interesting to do are the ones that as you say are not conducive to it. No way did a small plane of 1963 have these sophisticated avionics. It would have been limited to analogue dials. 1963 was 1963!
@DudeTours
@DudeTours 2 жыл бұрын
Correct, it would not have an electronic PFD. The Cessna Grand Caravan EX in MFS2020 simulator has the Garmin1000 glass cockpit. PFDs (Primary Flight Display) such as that did not exist in small general aviation until around 2004. As you said, the Piper PA-24 Comanche in 1963 would have had all analog or as many call them "Steam" gauges or a "Steam Cockpit" in reference to the analog gauges looking like a steam gauge. The video just used a modern aircraft to find the location of the crash. As they add more aircraft to the sim, maybe we can redo some of these flights in the actual aircraft. 🛩️
