I do believe Paperback Writer and Rain were rushed out the door in between Rubber Soul and Revolver because the Beatles were due to make another appearance on Ed Sullivan and couldn't make it to the US due to other commitments, thus they were packaged together as a single with Rain as the B Side and never made it onto an album. I don't think it was a Beatle decision but more EMI or whatever label they were under at the time. This song is awesome though!

I remember getting up before dawn to watch saturday morning cartoons. This song would be playing with the no programing yet icon on the tv screen. I think they even played the star spangled banner when they signed off. Am I remembering correctly?

It IS his song. And he can do whatever he wants to it because of that. Paul's got ethos. You want to hear him perfrom because of who he is.
