How important are tires to your Porsche and exactly what is an N-rated tire?! Porsche works very closely with tire manufactures to be sure Porsche's are fitted with the right tire for each vehicle! Tire's are developed harmoniously with a new Porsche as the manufactures are given the detail's of the new vehicle years before it is released to the public. While Porsche is developing the new vehicle the tires are being constructed as well. Once the pre-production model is completed Porsche meets with the tire manufacturers to see what they have come up by putting the vehicle and tires through a series of 33 rigorous tests consisting of braking, handling, traction via wet surface concrete and asphalt, overall ride quality, ride noise and many other factors!
Only after scoring well on these tests will the tires be considered to be an N-rated tire! It is said when developing a tire for the Porsche 918 Spyder it included extreme durability tests of over 2500 miles on the Nordschleife and high speed test track at Nardo with 550 prototype tires, 400 preproduction samples and 200 production samples. Only after passing all these tests was the final permission granted to be an N-Rated Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire the only tire certified for the infamous 918!
I highly recommend going with an N-rated on your Porsche as it is the tire that was developed with your car and is bested suited for it! Just like a shoe that is your own that fits your perfectly... you wouldn't be able to walk very well if you put Shaq's shoe on... just like your Porsche!
I am a big proponent Michelin Tires, I like the overall look of the tires but most importantly the handling and overall driving characteristics! The aspect ratio is the % of width, not the height in mm
@joesepu

I just found your channel. I might be wrong, but the second number on the tire size is not millimeters, but a percentage based on the wheel width (the first number). So in the case your present here, 245/35/ZR20, the wall side is 35% or the 245mm on the wheel width. The ZR20, while you are correct about the Z rating, you forgot to mention that the 20 means inches for the rim. No hate, I think this is a really great video and very informative. I just wanted to bring these two points to your attention

Thank you for the info it was very easy to follow. I have a question. Just checking to see if you have a solution. All 4 tpms were changed out, Panamera 4s 2011.The one on the passenger rear indicator came on again. Took it to Euro car dealer, he hooked up to the pc and programmed in so he says, yesterday, I drove and now today same tire sensor came on. Do you have any suggestions? I used the new one that was sent in the rear passenger. All 4 sensors are brand new and the 5th spare sensor was used just in case the one was defective.

If you wanted performance you should go for 18” wheels. All racing Caymans run on 18” wheels for a reason. 19” 20” are just for posing, in fact I’d go further than that and say that in my experience they’re dangerous in the wet as they have more surface area to clear.

Very informative and timely video. I am 3 weeks away from from receiving my 2021 Cayman GTS here in New Jersey- its getting cold. I have a question regarding winter tires. It appears that the only winter tires that have the "N" rating for my model year car are the 19 inch Michellin Alpines- OE wheels are 20 inch and thus I would need to purchase a tire/wheel set. Although the Pirelli Sottozero 20 inch will fit my OE wheels, the tires are not approved for Porsche. Your advice would be highly appreciated!
@Pcarwhisperer
@Pcarwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Great glad it was helpful, thank you for your question and congratulations on the new 2021 Cayman GTS that car is going to be a monster especially bringing back the 4.0 liter flat six, excited for you! I am a big proponent of factory equipment however in this circumstance I would say go with the Pirelli Sottozero Tires that will fit your factory 20" inch wheels! The Sottozero tires are a great tire with ample performance for winter driving! In my opinion the "N" rating is more important in the standard summer tires and all season tires as typically in dryer conditions you will be pushing the limits of the car more than you would in wintery conditions on winter tires! Hope this helps! Would love to see the new ride.. if you get a chance please send over some pics to pcarwhisperer@gmail.com Have a great weekend! Enjoy the new ride😎👍

Porsche Toronto says the only N rated tires in their system are the P-Zeros and the Goodyear Eagle F-1. What is your opinion of the Goodyear Eagle F-1 for a 718 with the 4 cyl turbo?
@Pcarwhisperer
@Pcarwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Richard! I do like the Goodyear Eagle F-1's over the P-Zero's! Never been a huge Pirelli fan I personally like a little bit of a softer tire to help with road noise... may not last quite as long but like the overall performance! What size are your rims? There is a N-Spec Michelin Pilot Sport 4S for 20inch wheels.
@rboddington
@rboddington 3 жыл бұрын
@@Pcarwhisperer I am told I have 18 inch wheels on the 718 Cayman. It's in Winter storage right now so I can 100% confirm, this is what the dealer has on record. I ran on the P-Zeros for a season. I am concerned the lack of tread makes them not so useful on wet roads.
@Pcarwhisperer
@Pcarwhisperer 3 жыл бұрын
Ahh gotcha! The Goodyear's according the the tread wear rating will last a bit longer as they are a 240 wear rating and the Pirelli's are a 220 rating so slightly longer for Goodyear! Worst case scenario to get significantly longer tread wear there is a Michelin all season tire with a 540 tread wear rating. It is not a N-Rated but will last longer almost twice as long!

@@jusssy5078 I have non N-rated PS4s on my 987.1 and I've never noticed anything about them. I've never driven with N-rated, so I don't know what I don't know. When it comes time to replace, I'm going to try and get N-rated, but if they are too hard to get it too $$, then the regular version is going to be fine with me. I'm satisfied with mine and have used them in all kinds of weather except snow. If it's colder or wet, I usually drop 1-2 lbs of air and the car goes right back to normal.

@@milogger7556 Hi, just had an email from my Porsche Centre about my non N rated Michelin 4S, they say "in a nutshell, yes they are safe to drive but with the sidenote that the behaviour might be different from what you might have gotten used to". You didn’t explain what differences are made to N spec tires.
@gregwormald8400
@gregwormald8400 9 ай бұрын
Hmmm. The aspect ratio is a RATIO of the sidewall height to the tread width, not a mm measurement. Strangely enough the wheel diameter is in inches but other measures are metric. Acquiring an 'N' rating is an iterative process and is a long-term (years!) joint development process. Both Porsche and the tire company will test more than once to find out what works best for the particular car. The tires are often significantly different from the tires on general sale although the N rating may be the only difference in model numbers. Porsche also says that the TPMS is for notifying you of problems and should not be used for pressure measurements when checking and inflating tires-use a proper gauge so each tire is measured with one gauge, not 4 separate gauges. Let's see this video updated so people are getting accurate information.
