FAQ's
Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. Whats wrong?
A: If the key assembly is not installing correctly, its either due to a component being damaged and needing to be replaced or a component not being orientated correctly. I would disassemble the key as seen here in this video and inspect for damage. If there is no damage, install the key. If there is damage, replace the key. Would you like help locating a key? If so, what is the brand and model for your computer?
Q: The Retainer Clip / Hinge Clip is not staying down on the Keyboard.
A: The retainer clip should be attaching to both the key cap and to the keyboard. If its not attaching to the keyboard correctly its because the keyboard pins are bent out of place, the retainer clip is damaged, or the retainer clip is not orientated correctly. If you cant figure it out by just looking at the clip with is hard to do sometimes, remove another key cap and compare the correctly installed retainer clip to yours.
Q: The Hinge Clips came off with the Key Cap. What do I do?
A: Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.
Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any component of the key assembly is broken, it would have to be replaced. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
A: They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
A: There isn't really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

Thanks for the guide! I did that for many times with older types of laptop keyboards. But with the Dell Latitude 7480 (rather new for me) I was not sure how to do it. Now, after I successfuly replaced 7 keys on a french one, I know how to do it - after watching this video. Thanks a lot! I would add: 1) pull the "northern" part of the key cap slightly up - to be able to put something inside under it 2) put the small screwdriver under the cap from the side, in the middle 3) make sure the screwdriver hold the inner mechanical parts away from the key cap 4) push the screwdriver to the "north" - it will click 5) now push the thing even further under the middle area of the key cap - to get to the other side of it 6) again, push towards the "northern" part of the key cap - where you are pulling it up 7) it will "click" for the second time 8) now, when one of the key cap sides is free, just unhook the other side - the "southern" part 9) you're done! 😀

On the 5420 there's even a metal bracket holding the cap. Due to this bracket, the cap can be folded downwards. Therefore, try to loosen the cap from the upper right edge first, followed by the upper left corner. The bracket is from left to right, in the middle of the key on the keyboard and fixes the cap on its lower side.

I accidentally popped my Ctrl key, I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out every combination I first put the plastic frame on the key then together attach them on the keyboard. Then I tried putting the plastic on the metal hooks then put the button but I couldn't figure it out. I didn't know it was going to be this easy XD

Could I suggest possibly an extra precaution when removing and replacing keys, taking into account the difference in design between the two top corner joints between the key and the clip assy, and the two bottom ones: The two top (nearest screen) are basically a peg, built into the key, snapping on to a bar built into the clip assy, to work as a hinge joint. The bottom two are not a clip strictly speaking, but a post built into the clip which slides into a kind of shoe built into the key, such that it can only go in from one direction. This is why the top peg and bar should be separated first, and then the key should be slid forward and only slightly upward, as little as possible to make sure the post and shoe are completely disengaged before lifting vertically out.

This is helpful, thank you. I accidentally poured some hot candle wax on my keyboard. Luckily, I was able to do what you showed, cleaned, put them back and it worked fine. However, after a couple of weeks the two most affected keys quit:( Do you think I need to replace the whole keyboard? Are there any other solutions/ideas? Appreciate it!

Overall this was helpful regarding the clip assembly but I tried again with another key and 3 of the four locators inside the key broke off, fortunately that was for the backslash key which I don't use much. My Latitude 3470 is 5 years old so maybe the plastic was brittle.

Could be. Key components are also super breakable. They arent really designed to be removed and reinstalled. Lousy design lol

This worked great for getting a key off and cleaning underneath. When I tried to put it back on, I could not get the bottom of the key (towards the space bar) to click back in. Any pointers?

If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

Hi. Thanks for your repair video. One of my key caps for a letter came loose, and came off together with the retainer clip attached. I separated the key clip from the cap, then tried snapping the clip back in place. I was able to snap the clip onto the upper right pin but not onto the upper left pin. I'm wondering of the upper left pin is slightly bent. If I could, I’d send you a closeup pic. Do you have a suggestion for getting the pin back in place (straightened) so I can snap the key clip back on it? The clip won't hold in place when snapped only onto 3 pins and the key cap won't snap in place on top of it. Thank you!

Those keys are constructed the same as a normal letter key. The components are just smaller :)

The S came off my work keyboard, and I cannot get it to stick back on. It looks as though a couple of the little tiny pieces of plastic that held it onto that white base may have broken. What can I do to get the S to reattach now?

If the retainer clip is broken, you would need to replace that part. You can either purchase an individual key if you can find one for sale. I usually have the best luck on Ebay and Amazon. If you cant find any for sale, you'll have to purchase a keyboard and take the key off there.

hello! so, i've done everything you said in this video. my alt key looks completely normal. when i tap it towards the top or middle it just sticks to my finger and pops out. the 2 little clips came out with my key as well, and i had no idea how to reassemble. i think i've assembled it right but i can't be sure. i can't risk taking off another key to look and see how its meant to be because i'm scared it'll do the same thing my alt key did! my laptop is the Dell Latitude 3340. thank you very much!

Are you asking about the Key Cap? With the letter on it? Right side up would be the side with the letter facing up, so you can see it. Upside down would be incorrect. Im not sure if I understand your comment correctly.

You wish to remove the rubber spring? That is held on by glue. Its not really meant to be unattached and then reattached :(

@@PC_Monkey Well, kind of the structure that holds the rubber spring. There's a wafer-like thing under it that's broken and it's impeding the hinge. I'm having a hell of a time getting the pieces out. I'm not even sure how crucial the wafer is to key performance.

If the retainer clip is not in need of replacement than no. You can just remove the key cap and pop the new key cap onto the existing clip.

Hi - I did it!! Both key caps came off without damaging the hinge plastic part and the new ones clipped on and work. That was top tip about holding down with the blade of the screwdriver while taking key off. Thanks so much. Your video gave me confidence to try it. Before searching the internet to see how it could be done and finding your vlog channel I was quoted £40 plus £5 cost for each key plus VAT! Bought new keys and tiny flat screwdriver for job - total cost £4.40.

This video shows how to fix a key that is mechanically not working. Usually it FEELS like its broken or comes off. If your key FEELS fine, then this video may not help. Make sure your drivers are updated and uninstall it and reinstall just to be sure. If that does not help, you may need to replace the keyboard as it may be failing.

Can you show us which way the top retainer pieces are supposed to fit together? Mine aren't broken but I can get them to fit together no matter which way I put them

Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.

There isnt really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

@@thatapollo739 You can look on sites like Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. However, very few sellers will include the rubber spring with the key assembly. If you cannot find one, then yes, you would have to replace the keyboard

I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

My plastic piece won't click in. It looks intact and there is nothing blocking it. Any advice?

Are you referring to the Key Cap? If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.

Yeah I was thinking of cleaning all of my laptop keys and the gaps between the keys but I think I will pass. I have the same laptop but it’s my work laptop that was provided by the company I work for. Too much risk for parts to break.

If any component is lost or damaged, you will have to replace it. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

@@SojoTaku Ok. You will have to remove the part of the clip that attached to the key cap. Be careful, but you would just pull it off / un-snap it. They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.

Is the weird white part the hinge clip seen here? If so, you would have to remove it from the key cap in order to install them back to the keyboard.

@@PC_Monkey with the top pad snapped on it feels like... nothing... like it doesnt push the"click" of the center button you feel when the pad is off...(like it doesnt make contact)

@@davidcrane6593 Sounds like it could be something mechanical / physical with the key. I would disassemble and inspect for damage. If none if found, reassemble the key as something may have just been loose. If that does not help the key to feel correctly, it may need to be replaced. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
