With the weather looking like snow, I decided to make the most of it and head over to the Peaks and then up in the direction of Margery Stones.
Joining me on this trip, was Kieron / @user-bd9tt1jv1w once again, and when we arrived at our destination, we were also joined by David Gaines www.youtube.com/ @gainesy_walks
The three of us enjoyed a wonderful snowy winter night, with a few beers, some good food and plenty of laughs.
In the morning, Dave set off before us, which was quite useful as we were able to follow his footprints in the snow without needing to breakout the GPS.
This was another excellent camp, which was made all the better due to the snowy conditions. To summarise; An excellent experience with superb company. 👍

Cheers Steve. It is a great little spot isn't it? I was equally surprised with the tent's snow performance. Before the snow started, Kieron was asking to place bets on how long it would be before my tent collapsed with the snow loading. 🙂 Luckily it didn't collapse, and I only had to knock the snow off the roof once during the night.👍

Thanks Bri. When the snow falls, it's almost like you're in a different location, but yet, a location that still looks familiar. 🙂 I know what you mean about people liking snow camping. Although I haven't dived into the KZfaq statistics (because I never do lol), I think that this video has had the most view ever, in a 24hr period, when compared to my other videos.👍

Than Fraser. I've always liked the idea of hot tenting, but I can't equate it with wild camping/hiking because, as you've mentioned, the weight of the kit. Earlier this year, I went to Wales and camped at a wilderness camp site, which involved a walk of a few hundred yards from the car to the pitch. In those circumstances, a bit of hot tent camping would be very feasible.👍

Nice one Steve. I started watching this this morning, but seeing as I'm up to my neck in snot (manflu), and it's a Sunday - the day after a gig, I've been sorting out the Sunday dinner, packing my gear away, napping and generally feeling sorry for myself. It's now approaching 9pm and I've settled down with a glass of honey and lemon. I've said it on another video recently (the chatterbox midwife) that snow camps are the best. The timing wasn't right for me to get out on a overnighter, and as my Christmas leave approaches this manflu will go and spoil the holiday for me. You got some great conditions, not too much snow as to be unmanageable but enough to make it worthwhile. Nice to see you breaking from your norms and having a Tikka instead of Jalfrezi. I bet you rusty bullethole was thankful for that 🤣 ATB mate.

Despite the grub not being as spicy as usual, morning ablutions were still a chilly affair on the cheeks lol.🙂

Cheers mate. Those are my thoughts exactly. When I'm on a return leg of a trip, I always take in lengthy stops just to soak in the views, as I know that I will be faced with roads, traffic and noise when I get back. As you mentioned, if you don't get out there, then you'll never see those views, especially when it snows.👍

Cheers Phil. I was a little concerned about using the tent in the snow. Although I have used it before in cold weather, I'd never used it in the snow and I was concerned about its snow loading capabilities. However, I only had to knock the snow of the roof once that night, the remaining snow seemed to have slid off it. All in all, I was quite impressed with its performance and I now have the confidence to take it out again in snowy conditions. Not bad for a tent that cost me £69 quid. 🙂

@@Hengists_Wild_Camps I dont regret buying mine one bit. It does flap a bit in the wind, but getting the guys in the right place and tight makes all the difference, as does the tarp clip idea that Ive copied from you!. Its lovely having so much head height. I generally put a trekking pole under one of the open doorway flaps which gives you a bit more shelter from rain or sun. Im also checking our your Champion beer, Id never heard of it before your vids, but its quite widely available! Cheers!

Youve finally done it, Ive bought some of your "good beer" and have to admit its a cracking pint! I prefer stouts but this will be coming with me on my future camps! Im also going to try the curry and cashew nuts idea. Can I ask a couple of questions?... I find that laying down is quite off putting, one reason why I got the Rakoon. Ive a few different chairs but cant quite get it right, have you tried any? Also, how much fuel do you take for your stove, Ive not got a fuel bottle, are they worth getting? Thanks for any reply Steve!
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps 6 ай бұрын
Ey by gum Phil, that's good Beer mate.🙂 I haven't used a chair with my Rakoon Phil, but I did do a search recently on Amazon for 'Camping Floor Chairs'. Rather than the normal type of camping chair that you construct, the results showed similar chairs but with little stumpy legs (a bit like myself lol), and these looked ideal for using whilst in the tent. As for the Fuel bottle, they're not really necessary. For years, I just used an old squeezy plastic sauce bottle. The Trangia fuel bottles that I use are more hard wearing than squeezy bottles, i.e. They won't split if dropped or crushed. I have 3 of them in different sizes; 330ml, 500ml & 1Ltr. I usually just take the 330ml bottle for an overnighter camp, and I'll only use about half of the fuel which is in it.

As a older lady wanting to do wildcamp which I've always wanted to do. Never done camping before which tent would be the best to buy for freezing weather. And i would like a 3 man tent so i have room for me and my stuff Any Tips Would be great. 👍

Hi J.A. For cold weather camping, what you need (IMO) is a tent with a solid inner, not a mesh inner, in-order to retain what little precious heat is produced when in your tent. In the past, I have camped out in cold conditions with a mesh inner tent, and although it is doable, when there's a -7'C wind chill outside, you do notice the icy breeze when it blows under your flysheet and into the tent. Unless you're also planning to camp in 50mph gusts (I've done it, been there and am not in a rush to do it again lol), then I wouldn't personally go spending loads of cash on mid/high end tents which will set you back anywhere from £500 to £1000. Instead I would take a look at more affordable tents, for example; Vango or 3FUL Gear brand tents, as they tend to contain solid inners rather than fully mesh ones.👍

Nice camp. Camped up there a few times but never approached from Langsett, I always park at kingtree and come from slippery stones but its a pain that they drop the barrier on a Friday so I reckon next time I'll give that way a go..might 'plod' upto crow stones, never camped there yet

Cheers Phil. Normally I would park near Howden dam then walk up Little Cut Gate towards Howden Edge, but as you alluded to, the road has been closed, not only at the weekend of late, but also during the week. I was up that way again last Wednesday, and the good news is that the road now appears to have been fully reopened (bar weekends).👍
