Peel and Stick Flooring over tile - no prep (not recommended for long term installs)

I installed the TrafficMASTER Taupe Oak 6 in. x 36 in. Peel and Stick Vinyl Plank in my bathroom which I purchased from home depot.
I cleaned the floor with some soap and bleach, but didn't do any other prep.
The results are great.
HOWEVER, a quick word of warning that I've found areas that I don't walk on very often have started to lift off the surface (a few months after initial installation). Meaning that if I wanted to be doing this in a more permanent way I should have used something to prep the floor better.

how many packs did u need for this space? and could u explain how u did around the toilet a bit more?
@joshseal2000
@joshseal2000 4 жыл бұрын
I used 2 packs, and had leftovers. To go around the toilet I used the thin paper that you pull off the planks as a stencil. Basically, put the paper down as if it was the plank and use a pencil to draw up against the toilet. Then you can cut out that shape in the paper and use it to cut the plank. It's not going to be exactly correct, then you can just use a knife to cut away excess plank until it fits really well.

what do you mean by prepping the floor? what is something else that you could have done to prep it besides cleaning? a certain paste or glue or? :0

I'm no expert, but something like the 'Bond Enhancer Self-Stick Tile Primer' from Home Depot : www.homedepot.com/p/Henry-336-1-Gal-Bond-Enhancer-Self-Stick-Tile-Primer-12056/202046165

Don't use caulk around it, it has a tendency to get dirty and it is very difficult to clean when it starts to get old. Keep it the way it is; it will give you a 'cleaner look.' Mine was caulked and it does not look good now. Good job. Ms. L. Churchill

I was planning to cailk mine, how does the caulk get dirty?
@neilouellette3004
@neilouellette3004 2 жыл бұрын
@@SAJANOVA Caulking doesn't get dirty unless you don't clean your bathroom. "Difficult to clean when it starts to get old" like mentioned above. Caulking isn't lifetime. It is recommended to re-caulk every 5 years. Replacing or re-caulking is a fairly quick and easy job.

It didn't when I first installed, but some places have lifted up, so it makes a small noise now.

I installed some but it makes a squeaky noise or sounds like the glue of the backing is coming off did that happen to you or did I not prep well enough?
@joshseal2000
@joshseal2000 3 жыл бұрын
Is that happening right away, or after some time? For my flooring in areas that I don't walk on much the tiles have detached from the surface and when I stand on them I do sometimes get some noise - but in most areas this isn't a problem. In hindsight I'd probably recommend doing more floor prep to ensure adhesion. I'm going to update the title of this video to help with that.

Just a quick word of warning that I've found areas that I don't walk on very often have started to lift off the surface. Meaning that if I wanted to be doing this in a more permanent way I should have used something to prep the floor better (e.g. using a Bond Enhancer on the surface before applying the planks)

Joshua Seal what did you do about the uneven part ? I am going through the same thing tomorrow and I’m worried about the uneven tile underneath it . Can you give more clarification on how to lay them down to avoid the spaces of uneven part ? I’m a newbie
@joshseal2000
@joshseal2000 4 жыл бұрын
@@orlandoharpistdeannacarolina technically I think you are supposed to put down a layer of leveling cement before you do the installation. However I think that's pretty unrealistic for most people. I just made sure that the edges of the plastic tiles were at least a few inches away from the edges of the tile underneath. So although after a few weeks you can start to see the tile edges underneath in some lighting conditions that is not where I'm having any issues with the tile adhering to the floor. The issue I'm having is in locations where I don't regularly tread on that area the tile is starting to unstick. So I would recommend putting down a primer over the existing tile before trying to stick anything down. Then when you do stick down the tiles, Don't let the edges of the peeling stick come too close to the edges of the tile underneath. You can find recommendations on the primer to use on the Home Depot comment section for the product.

Why not cut some of the tile and stick it to the sides.
@joshseal2000
@joshseal2000 3 жыл бұрын
I thought about that, but you'll be able to see the cut edge of the tile + not sure it will stick, and I'm not sure it will actually look any better than it does now - and when you consider the effort involved, just didn't seem worth it.
