I love how Penny is praised so highly by Leonard’s mother simply for who she is - not by how many doctorates or professorships she has gained.

I always feel bad for Leonard. His mother is constantly abusing him. She NEVER engages him and is always willing to instantly change her own points or perspectives to keep control over his consciousness.

"Real question, why aren't YOU proud of yourself" She literally answered his question with hers, she's not proud because his only thoughts are making mommy proud to the point that Leonard losses the ability to be a fully developed independent person. Penny is confident and secure with herself, attributes Beverly respects more than academic achievements.

The fact that Beverly says that Penny never complained about Leonard once makes me think that this is going on: Despite any of the shit from Season 10 or elsewhere, Penny truly loves Leonard and thinks he is such a great guy and doesn't want to leave him. This could also be confirmed from the wedding in the Season 9 premiere, where Penny says that Leonard is the love of her life and her best friend.

This was interesting because Leonard thought his mother was only impressed by professional accomplishments or aptitude- But rather, she is impressed by how genuine certain people are and not insecure about what people think about them…It’s possible it’s why she admires Sheldon - who despite his intelligence- is also a true individual.

One of my favorite scenes of the entire series and that is saying something. People get so caught up in criticizing the minutiae of Big Bang. Ultimately, this show is about the exploration of friendships, relationships, and family. In that respect, it delivered week in and week out. The growth of the characters is why millions loved it.

I would be proud of having someone like Leonard as my son. Smart, career driven, tender, communicative, patient, loyal, in touch with his emotions... That woman is missing a great relationship with someone really nice.

The fact that Penny never complaints about Leonard to his own mother shows her confidence in dealing with their relationship and her respect for Leonard. Her other children’s spouses probably complains a lot and as a mother she doesn’t want to hear the shortcomings of her kids from their spouses as it reflects on her as a mother. Maybe just a glimpse that Leonard choosing someone like Penny she is a bit proud of herself that she may have done something right as a mother even a tiny part. And she is proud of Leonard for choosing a woman who is a life partner rather than merely choosing a bride. Despite Penny’s upbringing, life choices before Beverly probably noted that Penny may drink but she will never be a drug addict, alcohol induced driver, and never be committed to the insane asylum. So compare to her other in-laws Penny is very normal

This scene was almost enough to make me stop hating Beverly, but no, she has one of the most acute perceptual lenses into the depths of the human mind and soul, yet refuses, or rather, dares not turn it in on herself, because deep down she knows what an utter failure she is as a mother

The question we’re left with after this scene is: Is Beverly truly impressed with Penny because she’s truly caring of Leonard, or is she impressed because, psychologically speaking, she’s different than her children’s spouses? Let’s not forget: this is a woman who sees the world through her scientific eye, which is why she likely fell short as a mother (compared to Sheldon’s mother). What’s to suggest that Penny isn’t a curious thing that Beverly’s fixated on (and therefore is proud for Leonard for showing her someone different)?

Beverly respects people who don't try and please her, people who are confident and secure in who they are and don't seek external validation. That's why her relationship with Penny has changed so drastically- when Penny was trying to please her previously she treated her just like Leonard. But when Penny saw her as an equal they were able to form a friendship where she respects her. Which is interesting, because she intentionally turned Leonard into the kind of person she doesn't respect.

I think we all agree that the show is ready to end soon, but it still has the occasional moment that reminds me of its best seasons.

Sloppy writing. Penny not complaining about Leonard to his own mom can be explained by a lot of other psychological factors besides "strength". His mom would be well aware of that. The only rational way to interpret that scene, is that Leonard's mom is a sadist. She showed the approval and attention to Penny (despite her mediocre IQ and social status), that she never gave to Leonard. She did so (as many emotionally abusive people do) to show Leonard that she was capable of emotional warmth, but not towards him. And she never answered his question as to why she was never proud of him. The best she could say was, he picked a wife who was capable of tolerating him. And that's what she's proud of him for. And how the heck would Penny have anything to talk about with Leonard's mom? This scene was just sad. It was not funny, sentimental, or even explanatory to any satisfactory degree.

If Leonard ever commits suicide, Beverly should be held entirely responsible.

I personally analyzed this scene as Beverly is definitely a similar person as sheldon, and she never meant to be a cruel mom to Leonard. Beverly and Sheldon are super smart, logical, but look like lack of being socialized(both they don't really have many friends). Both Sheldon and Beverly had mocked/sarcastic Penny about her low academic education a lot, but I now feel like they never mocked penny with intention. They were just too used to talking about others "logically" with having objective perspective. Now as seasons go, they are really close to penny. They are extremely smart enough to recognize their talking-ways could be really rude, but smart people like them always try to figure out everything logically such as when they try to figure out why they are mad/sad/happy. Really like(I keep watching this show until the recent season, though I have been dissapointing since season 6) that Penny got great compability with two of them. And I really liked that scene Beverly wanted to be penny's friend with a little shyness (as Beverly admitted that she doesn't have really many 'girl-friends'). This is why I think Beverly never meant to be a bad mom to leonard, she was just too different person to others, and so lack of their communication resulted leonard's personality in a negative way. But I think Leonard is fine. Even Penny's family are likely a cliche white trash family, leonard's dream family is probably like penny's family. (I'm writing this up with Sativa

I love this show but damn it does it need to end Poor Amy didn't have a good bachelor party. Amy says Penny and Bernadette are her best friends... And they still don't plan a good bachelor party. Instead once she says it, they take her to the bar...once she is passed out... They enjoy themselves and they don't even feel sorry. If I was Amy, I would be sad. I thought they were gonna plan a bad bachelor party, so they could take her to an actual bar or strip club. They are still making fun of Rajesh. Like can't they give him a good girl already. A pervert like Howard has matured into a great character, a husband and a father. Whereas whenever it looks like Raj can have a great companion, they always find ways to screw him over and make fun of him again. And this scene, poor Leonard still doesn't get the answer he wants. I love Beverly. She is a Tsundere. She is tough and misunderstood on the outside but really understanding on an extremely deep level. Although she never demonstrated affection in a conventional way, her books and papers were all about studying her little Leonard and giving him all the attention in the only way she knew how...logically and empirically. Yeah, she's the mum that brings out all the baby photos and won't shut up about her kid, only instead of an album it's a text book.

I felt very… conflicted about Leonard’s mother. See, because on the one hand, she’s played by the incomparable Christine Baranski, whom I absolutely love! But on the other hand, Leonard is my favorite character, and I wanted soooooo badly for him to get the affection and approval from his mother that he so badly needed. ***NEEDED*** , not just wanted. I suppose it’s a testament to Baranski’s talent that she could play the part so thoroughly that I actually disliked how Leonard’s mother treated him.

She probably generally wanted to talk to her but may have also wanted information for a new book.

It’s been said a lot before, but I sometimes wonder how differently Leonard and Sheldon would’ve turned out if Sheldon was a Hofstadter and Leonard was a Cooper. Sheldon would have thrived intellectually, but I think he would’ve become even more emotionally stunted. If Beverly treated him the way she did Leonard and his siblings instead of adoring him the way she did when she met him as an adult, it’s possible the lack of the love (and coddling) he got from the Coopers would’ve made him break down under the pressure and isolation. As for Leonard, he would’ve been VERY attached to Mary, but he still would have been judged a lot as the nerdy kid in his community. I doubt he would’ve skipped grades as quickly as Sheldon did in Texas, so not being in HS at such a young age would’ve helped a bit. I do wonder if he would have been discouraged from science entirely, or if he just wouldn’t have gotten as far with a town with so few resources and neighbors so against his interests.

Emotional abuse. Beverly isn't proud of anything Leonard has achieved himself, his grades, career, personality, etc, and she uses Penny as a tool to inflict further hurt on him, by making out that's the only thing she is proud of, who he married. As someone who has dealt with both an abusive mother and an ex partner, I know how their minds work, and the things they say. Leonard is a great guy, kind, sensitive, thoughtful, smart, gentle, a successful physicist, and any normal mother would be happy to have a son like him. She may be a psychiatrist but she's the one who needs therapy. She is eminently punchable, even more than Sheldon, tbh. She plays her part well though.

You have to consider that Leonard's family is full of over achievers, they are all very successful, and, to an extent, each of Leonard's siblings feel the pressure to have married someone their parents would consider to be successful. However, Leonard married for love, and that's probably why Beverley likes Penny the most, because she and Leonard are married not to impress Beverley, but rather to complete each other. Beverley is divorced, they just didn't work well with each other, and perhaps she fears this for her own children, but not so much with Leonard and Penny.
