Pentatonix abbreviated PTX, is an acapella group, meaning it's an all vocals, no instruments. The founding members of Pentatonix were, Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, and Kirstin Maldonado, from Arlington, Texas and have known each other since high school where they sang together in the school choir. In 2011, when high school friends Scott Hoying, (Baritone) Kirstin Maldonado, (Mezzo-Soprano), and Mitch Grassi, (Tenor), decided to audition for the NBC show “The Sing-Off”. During the application process they learned that groups needed at least five members. The trio recruited bass vocalist Avi Kaplan and singer, (Tenor)/beat boxer Kevin “K.O.” Olusola, to complete the lineup. They called themselves Pentatonix after the Pentatonic scale in music which contains 5 notes, one note for each member of the group. In September 2017, Avi Kaplan, the group’s original bass, left and was replaced by Matt Sallee. Sallee is the newest member of the group, replacing Avi Kaplan as bass vocalist after Avi's departure in 2017. Matt was included on their album Pentatonix Christmas Deluxe and featured on their next album PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. I. Matt Sallee graduated from Berklee College of Music, where he had been a member of the a cappella group Pitch Slapped.

They're currently on their 2023 Christmas tour for the new Christmas album, got their 5th Grammy nomination for last year's album and just released 3 videos in the last month or so... the most recent is a mashup of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's Pure Imagination and Charlie Brown Christmas' Christmas Time Is Here (Pure Imagination/Christmas Time Is Here) and I highly recommend that one.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZfaq, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZfaq videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZfaq), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZfaq, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. It is an often debated subject among the Pentaholics as to just how soon we introduce the "Beginners Guide" as we don't want to overdo the introduction. This is a compilation of snips of a whole load of songs which PTX have released. It highlights each member with some of their solos and then a brief history in video. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Another nomination for Holidays Around the World album in the 2024 list! Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

They have been together since 2011. Avi Kaplan is the only one who has left the group. He left amicably in 2017. His replacement is Matt Sallee. He joined in 2018 and is still in the group. The others are Scott Hoying, baritone,. He is the tall blonde. Kevin Olusola, the beatboxer, tenor, cellist, Mitch Grassi, the high counter tenor, and Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado is the mezzo soprano. They are an a cappella group. Usually no instruments. Lately they have been using some instrumentation. Their earlier work is all a cappella. They have been together now for over 12 years and are just getting better and better. Other commenters will probably tell you there has been only one change in the group, and that is Avi Kaplan, who left under very friendly circumstance, because of a family illness and his desire to get some down time from the constant touring this group still does. The new bass is Matt Sallee.

Some cello, some piano, some violin--but you always see it. Otherwise, just their voices. Their individual and partial group releases are usually not acapella. Many, many more hours of beautiful sound is in store. I heard them at their first public appearance in 2011 and have been a fan ever since. It's hard for me to imagine there are so many folks who have never heard of them. Definitely my #1 group.

Yes 100% A Capela. No instruments. Sadly, Avi left the group & was replaced with Matt. The tall blonde guy is Scott, the gal is Kirsten, the little guy with the amazing voice is Mitch & when people hear that high voice, they call the shock as being 'Mitch slapped'. They are the Kings of A Capella, so yes only their voices on this one. Nicely done guys. They are 3 time Grammy winners and were nominated for a 4th this year. Multi Platinum albums, multi gold. Their Christmas album debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard charts and they are still a mighty force. Merry Christmas!!

Although this is one of my favorites in the Pentatonix repertoire, here are at least 2 others that you will enjoy. Their cover of "Hallelujah" has been viewed almost 750 million times. And I love their cover version of "Amazing Grace,"

I love the group! They are extraordinary vocalists! Try out Hallelujah, Amazing Grace, Havana, Cheerleader or anything else anyone recommends! It’s all good. ♥️

This early recording had *no* instruments, although they do occasionally use a few. The beats were all Kevin Olusola, who had that lovely brief tenor solo near the end, and he sometimes combines with the bass (Avi Kaplan here, Matt Sallee nowadays) to create a bass drum kick. Kevin also plays the cello (and beatboxes at the same time - he's incredible!), and Scott Hoying, the tall blond baritone, plays the piano. They have also collaborated with dancer/violinist Lindsey Stirling on three songs. Tenor/countertenor Mitch Grassi and soprano/alto Kirstin Maldonado trade off the high parts: lovely together!

Nice reaction! Always fun to see someone react to Pentatonix (PTX) for the first time, as there are usually several surprises in store for them that the fans (Pentaholics) can anticipate! The cave used for the video is located in southern California, and was actually used as the Batcave for the old Batman TV series in the 1960s. While the Pentatonix video was filmed in the cave, the audio for any of Pentatonix's official videos is almost always going to be the studio track that they are lip-synching to. But like most of the higher-level a cappella groups, their version of lip-synching usually means that they are actually singing the song during the filming, but that audio from that isn't used for the music video, it's more so that their movements - breathing, lips, mouth, throat, etc. - all match up to what they did when they were performing the audio for the studio track. For a couple of original PTX songs with a Christmas theme, try the older That's Christmas To Me (with Avi Kaplan), or one of their newest videos and releases, Please Santa Please, which has their new bass Matt Sallee. All of the other members have remained the same since the group was founded in 2011.

Welcome to the premiere a capella group out there! As others have said, they have won awards for their arrangements and singing. Yes, they are still going strong 12 years in and currently on a US Christmas tour after spending the last 8 months touring Europe and then the US before taking a month off to record their latest (8th) Christmas album and going back on tour. There isn't a bad song in their discography of well over 200 songs. Most are covers ( upgrades actually) but they do have a lot of originals. They all song write and do basic arrangements and then flesh out the final arrangements after their arranger has taken their initial ideas and worked it up to a great piece. Some suggestions: Bohemian Rhapsody, Kiss From A Rose ( Seal cover), Please Santa Please (an original), 90's Dance Medley, Daft Punk medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Love Again ( an original).

They said they did Kiss from a Rose because of the line "Did you know, when it snows" They always include at least one not quite Xmas song like God Only Know, I Just Called to Say, I love You or Hallelujah on their Xmas albums

The group is still together and on tour. They just released another album and got nominated for the 5th time for a Grammy. Each of the 5 here have solo albums as well. Avi was replaced by Mat who does not yet have a solo album.

Yes, every single sound you hear is coming from them no instruments no studio Dobyns nothing it’s just them. Amazing isn’t it?

Sorry this is so long. One thing to remember is that 3 members have a 5 octave range, I don't know about Kevin, because he doesn't sing that much (I do prefer his normal tenor voice to his falsetto, but what do I know), that leaves Mitch, our boy Mitch has at least a 6.5 octave, and probably more, but he refuses to let others know his true top or bottom note. Part of that is he's afraid he'll hurt his voice, which I can understand. If the bass singer has a solo, Scott (the blonde) covers the bass part. Everyone can cover several parts. There has only been one personal change that was in 2017, Avi Kaplan the bass singer left for various reasons, mainly the touring schedule was too much for him, as he needed to be home more, and Matt Salee came on board. The face most people make when they hear Mitch's voice is called a Mitch Slap. For Christmas suggestions, O Come All Ye Faithful, Kevin wanted to honor his parents heritage, he dad is Nigerian, and his mom Grendadian, so it's not what your used to, but it is wonderful. Also The Prayer, a Celine Dion, Andre Buchelli original. Talk about angelic sounding, and just about any other of the traditional songs will be more than expected. When it comes to Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, only PTX a group that uses no instruments, can win a Grammy for a song that has no words. This is not a Christmas song, but one they put on a Christmas album, Hallelujah, by for their most popular song, last I checked a couple months ago, it was way over 725 Million views.

PTX is pure talent. There is a rapper/artist from the UK named REN who is also pure talent. I suggest you check out Ren's 'Hi Ren' and various other tracks of his; you will be as astonished as PTX. I think my most favorite PTX song is 'White Winter Hymnal', however it is a stretch to pick only one.

The singing is amazing and the melody is gorgeous but the lyrics make me cringe. Mary did you know your newborn baby was born to be slaughtered like a lamb?
