Taking a look at the Pentel graphgear pencils, sizes 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9. I see a lot of artists using these mechanical pencils so I decided to give them a go. Throughout the video we look at the design of the barrel, what comes with them, how they feel, what leads fit in (testing colour neox eno)..etc. Basically anything I could think of to look at and review on camera! And then I finish with a sketch of the Witcher / Geralt of Rivia :) Links to the pencil can be found below.
Let me know if there are any pens or other art supplies you guys want me to test out on camera and give my opinion on :) What are your thoughts on the graphgear pencils?
You can watch a slightly slower version of the Witcher sketch on it's own with some commentary here.

Wrong. This is a dark binding agent drawing. He didn't apply enough graphite to reach the grade. Only a tiny amount of graphite was applied to the paper and almost no preservative was applied to protect the graphite dust. The manufacturers are in charge of the shading and grading. The artist isn't allowed to be in charge of shading. You select the premixed leads. You agreed to apply the lead FIRMLY AND CONSISTENTLY.

It's all over Amazon. I think the AIN Stein is the best. You can get it in HB, 2B, up to at least 6B. It also has better composition than any other lead. It's a little pricier, of course, but far more than worth the cost.

What's the suitable lead for sketching? HB or 2B?
@SketchedbySte
@SketchedbySte 3 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of it is personally preference, for me I prefer the harder leads to create fainter lines to start my sketches ( so moving along the H range as opposed to the B range ) HB is in the middle and still perfect for sketching. Unless I have mixed it up, the B range is where it gets darker and maybe a little less forgiving, also it has a tendency to smudge more, that being said 2B shouldn't be too extreme.

thanks for the video. im goning to be honest. ive always thought the Graphgear 1000 is an ugly looking pencil. Of course that doesnt mean its a bad pencil. I just have a bit of a problem with larger all metal body mechanical pencils. Ive used a staedtler mars micro 775 for 25 plus years now and love it but thought id dip my toe into more expensive penciloptions. I brought the Rotring 600 which a beautifully crafted bit of kit. Full metal body and very elegant. But i find it too top heavy and more importantly too thin so ive mainly stuck with the mars micro even though it was a fraction of the rotrings price. I recently picked up the mars technico (not my first clutch pencil) and graphgear 500 and i thknk ive found a replacement in the later as my main mechanical pencil. I love them both but the 500 is beautifully balanced and has a lovely large metal grip. Have u ever used the 500 and if so do you prefer it to the 1000 and which do u prefer over all the graphgears or the technico?. thanks
@SketchedbySte
@SketchedbySte 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I completely understand that. I have a Pentel mechanical pencil that is quite lightweight which is one of my favourites (It's 0.3 and red) I have used the Staedtler mars quite a bit in the past too. I like them but the ones I have are all 2.0 thickness and I generally prefer working with thinner points. There was another mechanical pencil I wanted to try, I cannot think of what brand it is though, it is black and is triangular in shape. For me I don't really find any 'better' than others though, I think I just like the feel of changing it out after a little while. It never hurts to have a few different types ! :)

I have them. GG 1000 (0.7, 0.5, 0.3. GG 500 (0.5, 0.3), and the mars technico (2mm) all plastic and the mars technico with metal grip (2mm). I think that the gg 1000 is the most heavy and center balance. The most confortable for me are the GG 500, tip balanced, and lightweigt. Inthemars technico I think the all plastic is better than the metal grip mars technico. And more versátil too because you can sharp the point with the sharp barrel sharpenner and have a lead Minor than 0.3 if you wish. But my fav is gg 500

@SketchedbySte

Hey, so I think people might have very different opinions on this topic, because the beauty of graphite pencils / mechanical pencils is that they work beautifully on most people regardless of smooth / flat or textured ( maybe not so well on shiny board / papers in comparison ) but for me personally, I love using pencils on regular printer paper and most types of paper that you can get in cheap sketchbooks! There is also a Strathmore paper called drawing paper which I think it a little thicker, but I haven't tried that to comment on.

Hey, good question, one that I'm not actually sure of myself either! I had a quick look online though and this is what I found 'A drafting pencil is a type of mechanical pencil that is designed for precision drawing and sketching. It has a longer lead sleeve and a harder lead than a regular mechanical pencil. A drawing pencil is a general term for any pencil that can be used for drawing, which may include drafting pencils, mechanical pencils, or traditional wooden pencils.'

@SketchedbySte
@SketchedbySte Жыл бұрын
Hey, I think both 0.3 leads and 0.5 leads for the graphgear pencils are both so don't sweat it too much between the 2 :) I quite like the 0.3 but because it's so thin and 'sharp' it can indent a little onto your paper depending what you use i.e when you erase some lines you might notice lines indented a little onto thicker paper, that being said I haven't had many issues with the 0.3 snapping much either, although I am not heavy handed. It sounds like 0.5 could be a safer bet but honestly either are great, down to personal preference I guess :)

It completely depends what you are looking for. Thinner lines? Thicker lines? one isn't really better than the other, it's more down to preference. I like the thinner nibs like the 0.3 and 0.5 but they are all fairly similar, and the thinner ones have a higher chance of snapping or indenting the page if it's thick paper or card.

I can draw dragons from the front as well as the side, but please don't think I'm boasting, cos believe me, I've got nothing to boast about, I'm getting better but I still have a way to go. One way to make your dragons stand out is to use the features of different animals and mix things up a bit, you will fail at times, but when you get it right, when you create artwork that is unique to you, there's no better feeling. All the reference you need is there in front of you, all you have to do is observe and you can't go wrong. My God....I'm starting to turn into Gandalf!!!

What do you think about the 0.9?
@SketchedbySte
@SketchedbySte 2 ай бұрын
Hey, good question. It's probably the size I use the least, but that's probably more to do with the face#t that I draw quite small and in small A5 sizes sketchbooks ( a bad habit ) so I like my lines to be real thin and light. The pencil itself is actually brilliant, including the 0.9, and I would argue it has the advantage that it is less likely have the 0.9 leads snapping too. For me I use them mainly if I want to go over my pencil sketch with thicker lines, on the outside for example. I think a regular pencil is closer to a 2.0 so a 0.9 lead is still great for accuracy and a nice size. I think any of the Pentel mechanical pencils are winners though, whichever size you go with. Thanks for watching!

@@karliklopez9258 Revisa esto: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJefZtGnybq4gok.html.

Yes they're great for drawing with, specially the .3 and the .5 for precision and details. Wrong. You AGREED TO FOLLOW THE PRINCIPLES OF partical grading / filtering. Graphite dust won't stick to paper. Graphite dust was mixed with a binding agent. They sifted the graphite dust into fine grades. Mixed each grade with a different mix of binding agent. 2B drawn lightly will not put enough graphite onto the paper to reach the grade of 2H. The percentage of graphite falls below the grade and its no longer considered to be a graphite drawing. Graphite must be thick enough to reach the professional grade and it must have enough preservative applied so it can stay on the paper for a very long time. You didn't put enough graphite onto the paper. Your graphite content isn't up to the grade. You didn't apply enough preservative agent to protect the drawing. You made a dark wax preservative drawing and DIDN'T make a preserved graphite drawing.

Why does everyone on KZfaq now say "these ones"? It's horrible grammar and just sounds silly. Get rid of the word "ones". I like these means the same thing as I like these ones, but without grating on the ear. It really is strange how so many KZfaq sites have people who say this. It's not only horrible grammar, it's first grade horrible grammar.
