I've been considering changing my name for a while now and I'm trying to find one that feels right to me and defines me better as a person and means something to me. And I cannot tell you how good it feels to hear other people share their own stories. I don't really relate to my name at all, it was just the name given to me by my parents. I don't mind being called by my name by others but I feel no confidence in saying it out to people and announcing it as my name. It's almost like I was given the wrong name. I don't relate to it much like someone who doesn't relate to their assigned gender at birth. It just feels wrong, like it is not the identity I want for myself. I'm just going to go through the process of finding a new name that feels right to me and I'll see how it goes. I don't know if I will go through with it, but I want to at least go through the process and see if I really want to change it or if it's just a phase.

Amazing comment. I feel the same way as you did. Thankfully I was confident enough to change my name which I wanted to do for a long time and successfully completed it last year! Depending on the country you live in, for example, the UK or Canada, there are legal ways to change your name legally and it's possible. Think about what your new name is going to be, make a decision because you will be that fresh new person on your new name for the rest of your life.

I've legally changed my name, the people from my past don't know about it as I've cut them out of my life. The situation I was in, I had no choice, for my peace, safety and freedom, I legally had to change my name. Being honest, I never liked my old name, and my current legal name is one I like to think the universe gave me. When I hear my old name or meet people with that name I'm reminded of the old me, the past version of myself or factors behind why I had to change my name. I've made peace with why I had to change my name, and there's people out there who still go by my old name. For a while, I wanted to hide it, but I'm now accepting that I shouldn't hide from my past. I don't feel bad or triggered when I hear my old name, I know my truth and why I had to do it

There are so many reasons for changing your name out there and I really appreciate the different perspectives. Our name is one of the most important things we have in life, that usually gets taken for granted, and it's really inspiring to see these people making it their own and so special to them.

I couldn't agree more, our names are the first thing people know about us. I've always hated my name, now I'm trying to choose a different path for myself. Being Dolores fills me with joy and confidence, I want to embrace who I am and change my name. I've never felt my given name fit me, it just feels wrong. I don't mean any disrespect to my parents by changing it, but Dolores is my heart name.

I'm changing my last name from my fathers to my mother's maiden name. My father was never really around and when he did decide to he would just kind of make everything about himself as to why he couldn't be a parent. Currently changing my name from Barbara to Brooke. I’m in my late 30s so some ppl think I’m crazy. It’s going to be hard since I’m so established in life and work. But I’ve never felt like my name belonged to me. I cringe when I had to say it…almost to the point of embarrassment. Every resume I put graduation dates so they wouldn’t assume I’m 80. Ik what u mean. Whenever i say my name or especially when i write it, its just feels wrong like it isnt me. However the name i want always has felt like me so once im finished with secondary school im gunna change it for colledge. My parents advised me not to change it officially tho cus we'd have to change my gcses and passports and stuff. So im just gunna change it for colledge. I am a bit nervous tho cus like i will still know some ppl there that went to my school or my previous school, but i know I'd regret it more if i didnt change my name just cus im scared of other ppls reaction. I'm not non binary even tho my new name is gender neutral, tho im still perfectly fine with non binary ppl, but ik there will still be ppl who will think differently of me and think i am non binary cus a lot of ppl still are transphobic to non binary ppl. The other concern is getting used to the name. My family has always called my new name as a nickname anyway, so im kinda used to it. However, im still nervous of not recognising it. I told my parents but they forget a lot of the time. I told my sister tho and she hasnt not once called me my original name, and that always makes me happy. I have also told my friends, i do have to keep telling my friends but i hate doing so cus everytime they act as if theyve lost me cus they always call me by a shortend version of my old name. They sometimes joke about it (not in a mean way) they just think that im not that serious or wont actually do it. Idk, hopefully they'll get used to if i change it in colledge tho. I sent my colledge application a month ago, i forgot if their was the option to change name, if they're was ik i would've definitely changed my name, but if not ill just ask to change it. Im quite a bit of an anxious person so i dont know if im just making my life harder, but hopefully ill get to a place where my new name is my name and i won't have to think about it. Anyway, sorry for the long message, i just needed to write this all down. Thanks for reading

Names are just labels...sure, you were given that name since birth but remember, it's your choice to change your given name to something that matches you perfectly, but be wise about it too, just look up any meanings of the names you like...if there's one name you like change it to that, whether it'd be your middle name, or other names you want to go by then do that .

This is really helpful for me. Today I had a bit of a breakdown because I was wondering why I felt so much better by being called my preferred name vs my current name. I’ve gone by D, my preferred name, for four and a half years now and that’s almost 1/3 of my life. My parents were talking about it though and they didn’t understand why I changed it. Ended up getting incredibly upset with the conversation and now I’m having a bit of an identity crisis because I’m unsure why I feel such a burden of being called my old name. I just don’t like being called it because it doesn’t feel like me. I can’t tell if that’s a good enough reason. Do I need a reason other than that? I don’t want to be called my old name. I want to legally change it. I’m not old enough though and I can’t without parental permission. I never liked my old name as a kid and as soon as I entered middle school, I started going by D instead. I chose that because my friend called me DD. My old name also started with the letter. If anyone has advice or anything, I’d really appreciate it. I’m sorry for ranting.

Your name reminds me so much of the Johnny Cash song, Boy named Sue. A father who named his son Sue which caused the kid to grow up and act out against the world. But when he finally found his father and faced him, he realised he did it to toughen him, build his character up. If you haven't heard the song, go listen to it! See, if you introduced yourself to me as Jan I would think you were foreign and wouldn't assume it to be a feminine name that some may think. I think its neat to hear and see people with 'gender bender' names. I do hope you find the answer on what it is you want!

why do comparies ask for your prefered name and then refuse to call you by your prefered name? I changed a derogatory female name to a non- derogatory female name. several very large companies ignored my request and argued with me that I cannot change from a derogatory name.

I’ve been wanting to change my name since forever. It has always felt wrong to me. Think of it like someone asks for your name, and you just blurt out something that someone else told you to say. There was this one time the counsellor at my school asked me and my friends for our names. Then she got to me, I say my name, and it just feels so SO wrong in every way. I wanted to say something else, but I just couldn’t. I sat on the floor and almost started crying at how wrong it felt to me. I couldn’t relate to the name whatsoever. And I still can’t. But me and my mom looked through our family tree recently and chose a name we both liked. We have talked about changing to that, and I would be so happy if we did. So now I’m hoping for the best.

I've never felt a connection to my given name ever since I was five, the name I chose for myself is Dolores, I've used it exclusively since 2019. I can't wait to change it, I love introducing myself as Dolores, it fills me with joy and happiness. I also feel it's a way for me to start over after some traumatic events in my life. I’ve changed almost all parts of my name at this point, but I don’t want to get rid of the love and care put into my name by my parents. My first name is a shortened version of my birth name, my first middle name is my own choice. It’s what I want to identify with, but I don’t want to lose my history, so I go by both. My second middle name is what my middle name was going to be before my parents changed it. It’s a shortened version of my dad’s name, and my mom chose it. And my last name is still the same. My old middlename is going to be one of my children’s names or middlename. I think names are beautiful, and I love mine!

I’m indifferent to my first name and although have some sick names I could see myself with, I would never change it simply because it would be too weird. My surname on the other hand, i definitely will. I’ve always hated that children automatically get their fathers surnames at birth and considering that my mum did the majority of raising us I’d love to either change my name to her maiden name or hyphenate both parents.

I’ve been wanting to changing my name since I learned how to talk. My name is Chantal (not going to say my last name so I changed it to the name I want) and I prefer to go by Annabelle Melrose. I told everyone on Facebook and social media and I’ve been going by Annabelle. But close family. I haven’t talked to them about the change in my identity. They still call me Chantal but I noticed that my aunt and my uncle is accepting so I’m happy. My sisters are totally supportive but they still call me Chantal. It just. I can’t change that. I’m Chantal with them. But now. I’m Annabelle to myself and to everyone else. My ex best friend didn’t like the change. That’s why we’re ex best friends. I supported her and I realize that she won’t put any effort in our friendship so I kinda distant myself. Now we don’t talk anymore. My current best friend is actually my step brother. His father is with my birth mom. Don’t know what’s going on with that but to us. We still consider family. We’ve been family since 2015 so he know who I am and I know him. We just never got to know each other because of the way we lived our lives. But the traumas we experienced helped us bond and become close. It was so good to have a friend in the family like him in my life. And I’m so happy to call him my best friend. Also, he knows that I don’t like to called Chantal and the name I used to go by for about half a decade didn’t seems like a good name for me. We wanted a name that’ll make me seems more like me. I’m a elegant, shy, quiet person who has a hint of destruction. I’m also very adventurous and a daydreamer. So Annabelle Melrose was born. I picked Melrose because I wanted to keep my last name initial the same but also make it more beautiful. My favourite flower is rose. I know. Cheesy. But yeah. I picked Melrose. Picking the name Annabelle was hard, because I wanted to have a name that I can pronounce. And I always loved the word Anna so I asked, “what about Anna?” He looked at me and said that it’s too modern so I asked, “Annabelle?” He loved it. And I added, “I like to go by Annabelle, Annie, Anne, or Anna.” Even now. I’m still happy with my new name. I even might add “Belle, and Bella.” lol

You're not the only one who is experiencing the same situation as I was during my young life. Thanks to the UK law you can legally change your name through deed poll, whether you live in the UK or abroad. For abroad you must be a UK citizen, and residents of the UK with overseas citizenship, must check and comply with their country's rules and regulations on name change. Otherwise there's no harm in it! Best to change your name as you described your situation as I did. 😊

I've been thinking about changing my name for a while now because I feel that it just doesn't suit my appearance nor my personality at all (my name now is Ava Aurora; though, I don't mind my middle name, it's just my first name that I hate). I also hate the way it sounds; people say I have a very pretty name, but I hate it. Every time I hear someone call my name, it's like nails on a chalkboard assaulting my ears. It's also way too popular. Everywhere I go, there's always like three other girls with my name, and I'm sick of hearing it. Even as a little girl I've never liked my name, and introducing myself to people with my birth name makes me feel uncomfortable and I'm not confident in it at all; so, I just introduce myself with a different name to avoid feeling insecure. I told my mother that I want to change it, but she gets mad and says she doesn't want me to, even as an adult. My father, however, is completely okay with it and even gave me some examples of names that I could choose from. I've been looking into many names for a long time that really suits me as a person, and I've finally decided that I want my name to be Parvati Hel. I feel it suits me so much better than my given name and it really describes me well. I don't care what my mother thinks, I'm going to change it because it's my name and my life. I don't want to live the rest of my life having a name that I hate. I can't wait to change it so that I can actually feel confident and proud when I introduce myself! I apologize for how long this is, I just had to vent haha.
