I bought one. It works great. I can even bend stainless steel flatwear to make rings (at least the thinner pieces). I had purchased a cheaper bender at first. This one is so much better.

I'm learning how to make rings, and it's already obvious that my ring-bending pliers don't have enough bending force for ring shanks getting over 1.5mm--especially when the ring is constructed of several pieces. Unless I want to hammer away on a ring for an hour, I'm going to to need a tool such as this excellent Pepe ring bender. Also I noticed on Pepe's product page, it now includes an 18mm mandrel and die, and a set of Delrin dies are also included--presumably to protect against marring rings with intricate designs. The die/mandrel sets are also nickel-plated now, which would protect against rust pits getting transferred into the work. It's pretty clear that if you're in the business of making rings for clients, this tool will quickly pay for itself. Once again, and excellent video review of an excellent product!
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 6 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. Once you clamp it down, you can get much more force than you could with pliers. I find it also helps to keep the sides parallel too. Note on Pepe's site they also have some larger ring shank benders and also a wedding ring stretcher / reducer with integrated shank bender too. (hoping to get one of those soon, video when I do). Dave

As an update, I just received my Pepetools ring bender and mounted it to my bench, and just tried it out. The latest unit looks a bit different: the posts and dies are now nickel plated, which will prevent rust. The other parts are black anodized and look quite nice. There is also a set of 6 strong Delrin dies--which I suspect I'll used a lot--and I'll explain why. I found the nickel/steel dies often leave some tool marks--most notably when using the 12mm or angled die/mandrel sets. These tool marks aren't too deep and are quickly polished away. However, since I often polish or apply gold and designs before I bend the ring, I've found the Delrin dies are much easier on the surface. I can already see it's a very nice tool that will save a lot of time when making rings.

@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 7 жыл бұрын
Silver plate? What do you suppose is going to happen when you heat it? you will likely melt off the silver plating and make a mess. Much better to use sterling silver spoons and anneal them, you can then polish them up later. Dave.

what is the maximum thickness of sterling silver can I use? my spoon handles are quite thick, also is there a unit that includes bracelet size?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 6 жыл бұрын
The thickness is (to some extent) determined by the size of the post you are using, as the smaller posts will allow a greater gap between the post and the die. Although a lot of people use this for making spoon rings, it's not really what it was designed for. As the name suggest it was designed for silver and gold for making rings (eg wedding bands). Pepe also make a more robust ring bender with a much longer handle and will bend pretty much anything. This is ideally suited to what you are doing. See link. So the question is what can I use to make spoon rings from silver pate and stainless steel cutlery , I’m using a mandril and vices but it’s so slow I need it ring and bangle size . Do you have any ideas ?

Yes Pepe make a ring shank bender which is more robust and bigger for more heavy duty items. Either on its own or integrated into a ring bender. See links. Mr Khan, community leader ? You can get huge bags too, for use in your car, to stop the windows steaming up, or to remove condensation. Look on ebay or Amazon for "Silica gel" . Dave.

Hello Dave, Wanting to buy a ringbender, I am no sure witch one is the best for me. The Pepetools or the Durston. Why did you choose for Pepetools (American) and not for Durston (British)? Is there a difference?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 7 жыл бұрын
Long story... I was reviewing tools for "a big British jewellery tool supplier", and I suggested that they sell the Pepe Ring bender and Pepe Jump ring maker. Some time later they then started selling a "British made", ring bender and a "British made"Jump ring maker. Basically a British tool company (whom I wont mention) had ripped off several Pepe designs and copied their leading products. As such, when I was offered a jump ring maker from that certain British company (for free), I sent it back refusing to test a shameless copy. (...It even had a genuine Pepe blade in it !!). Disgusting. I work very closely with Pepe tools, testing and helping to improve their tools, so I get quite annoyed when other companies then copy their work . So in my opinion, if you want the best then get the originals, Made in the USA by Pepe tools. Avoid Chinese fakes and British rip offs. In the UK Genuine Pepe Tools are sold by Sutton tools... If a tool is worth buying , then buy it from the people who created it. Dave. www.bettsmetalsales.com/p-Superior-Ring-Bending-Tool?SelectMaterial=TOO&selectCode=TOOLSRM046

How high of a apiece can I bend on this tool. If its higher than the die, will it bend evenly and also will it scratch the metal while you are bending it ?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 7 жыл бұрын
The post are 18 mm high. So that's about the max width you want in order to get a perfect bend with all the material in contact with the post and die. Yes, you can bend wider material. In this case you should mark up the work accurately and once bent, flip it over and bend it from the other side. Hope this makes sense. Dave.

I am just a jeweller reviewing a tool (which is very good), So perhaps don't take out your frustrations on me. I don’t sell them, and NO I did not get paid to make this video - not by anyone. If people buy the tool or don’t buy it, does not affect me as I don’t sell them. I am just sharing my knowledge with others. But in a spirit of openness, I have published your comment. I must say that your description of the product I find very surprising. I have many Pepetools items and I have seen first hand the standards, the state of the art machinery and extreme tolerances they work to at the factory. The tool in my video is a genuine item direct from the factory and as you see the quality is superb. I'm not even sure how Pepetools could make something as you describe which is so faulty - as they work in small batches I just don't see how that could even happen. However, I am aware that there are a lot of fakes and copies on the market, which do have the poor quality issues you mention - especially fakes from China. Unless you bought it directly from Pepetools, via their official website, then I would strongly suspect you bought a fake. Your alleged response from Pepetools is also surprising, they are a family run company and are ‘genuinely’ nice decent people. I personally know they do many "very" generous acts to support charities, groups and individuals. I've known them for years, I can't imagine they would make such a sarcastic comment, degrading their own tools. I can't see any company would say something like that - Unless of course they knew you bought a fake. This is not the only video on this tool and the others appear to be favourable ones. Perhaps you could make your own review video showing the tool you purchased, highlighting the issues and explaining where you got it from? Surely that would be helpful to other viewers. Dave

@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 3 жыл бұрын
Pepetools are made in the USA, so I guess shipping to Greece is expensive, same here in the UK we also have to pay import duty and tax. For heavy and expensive items it can really bump up the cost of buying tools from the USA. Either way, its worth sending an email to pepetools and asking them if there is anything they can do. Perhaps they can ship it differently. I'm sure they will do what they can to help. Dave

goto 3:00 see the rust stain coming from under the center sliding piece ? The brown stripes. That usually means a cheap (non stainless / non brass) spring that is already rusting out. Send it back while it still has a warranty....... Yes. Old video. But useful information anyhow to apply to a new device. Notice this is near new & came with an anti rust greasy layer. But there is something out of sight producing rust - the one and only breakable part.
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 5 жыл бұрын
* * I have published this comment,as you are completely wrong.* * The brown marks you see are "brown grease", a thick sticky grease applied to the piston as it is a moving part. It also helps protect the item whilst in transit. You imply that anything not made of brass or stainless must be cheap. Why ? Give the guys at Pepe some credit, the guys are professional engineers, born and bread. All the products go through months and sometimes years of testing and designing before going to market. Obviously the item is not brass, that would not be strong enough, stainless, likewise does not have the correct hardening properties. Its made from carbon tool steel which is then hardened. Pretty much the same material as every other metal tool in my workshop. Pliers, files, bench tools, vice, etc are all hardened carbon steel. I don't have any brass pliers, and i don't have any stainless steel files. Hence the name "tool steel". I live by the sea in the very wet and damp north of England, - a highly corrosive atmosphere. Outside, metal garden furniture will last a year before disintegrating. But in my workshop, my ring bender is fine....and there is no need to send it back. Dave
