This was actually on their very first album which was recorded in a tiny Washington DC apartment on a gaming PC. Drums were played on an electronic set. And these dudes were only ~26 years old. The entire album - every instrument - was pretty much completely written, recorded, engineered, and mixed by Misha. He even played bass for this album I believe. And it was written as all instrumental tracks. Their singer Spencer had to write and sing vocal lines over all this complex crazy music, and for some tracks sing stuff that wasn't written by him and not in his vocal range (Shocking that there is anything outside his range) since they changed vocalists a couple of times before this album. Even with having such a chaotic and low-budget production process they still managed to make such fuckin awesome music and completely change the game in the genre of prog metal at such a young age. These guys are outta this world. They have the #1 spot in my soundtrack of life, being my favorite band all throughout my 20s. Also you mentioned wishing you were a fly on the wall for their recording process. I highly recommend watching their documentaries they made about their entire writing/recording processes for their last couple of albums, I think they're free on KZfaq. One is called Remain Indoors, the other is Juggerdoc. Can't remember if they did another one for their newest album. Also they did short little "in the studio" video updates for their first couple albums; also on KZfaq. If I could make a suggestion, check out Sattellites or Ragnarok. Probably my favorite songs by them if I was forced to pick.

This was their first album and was largely written by Misha as instrumentals. I can't speak specifically about this song, but Spencer had to create his melodies and add his vocals to finished songs. Going forward he was more heavily involved and the vocals are now an equal or even greater (in some cases) component in the composition. I'll always have a soft spot for this album, but the band has leveled up tremendously since these days, both in composition and sound. I'd still love to see you react to the closer on this album someday, Racecar. As do many of your other viewers judging by the comments haha. Best of luck with your surgery!

Oh boy Geebz you should do another 1hr video like the anniversary one but for Periphery songs they have like 6 albums (5, but one is a double album), so many good riffs and melodies to discover! And btw to answer your question at the end of the listening this whole first album came initially from instrumental songs, with most riffs/ideas written years ago mostly by Misha. The vocals were added later. On every album that follows they tried to improve their process where either each of them would be the main composer for one song or they would bounce ideas off each others for some other songs of the album (mostly toward the latest albums). Basically this whole things is 5 nerds in a studio having fun with heavy sounds and electronic stuff :)

their first album is definitely far and in a way drastically different from all of the others. all of the tracks have electronic stuff that bridges each song into the next. bass on p1 was tom murphy and they had a guitarist by the name of Alex Bois who later got replaced by Mark Holcomb.

Loved early Periphery, guys were still geniuses even as kids (basically)!

Hey Geebz, long time listener, love your stuff....Big fan of the Radiohead ones... Wondering if you have considered doing an Interpol song? .... I would suggest NYC, Next Exit or Wrecking Ball but there are plenty of groovy tracks .... Very big band that doesn't get decomposed enough ;) .... Thanks buddy, peace & love

As a fellow former drummer with a strong penchant for well produced/engineered modern prog metal, I *strongly* recommend the song "Son of Robot" by Dance Gavin Dance.

You should do a reaction to The Tea Party. The River or Sun Going Down. P.S . Glad I found your channel.

Awesome, I'm here for anything Periphery. This is off their first album, so not quite as polished as the later stuff you've listened to but it's still great in it's own way.

I actually prefer the earlier stuff, because the vocals get a little too pop punk for my taste as things go on. I always struggle with periphery - would probably be a top 5 band for me if not for the clean vocals.

Whelp, too bad for you that you did pick a song that was the meat in a sandwich. Guess you'll have to decompose another periphery song to make up for it!!! HAHA!! Thanks for this my dude! I've been loving your channel for a while. You rock!
