This is a really great, but unexpected song choice. Definitely more “underrated” but in my opinion is pretty much a quintessential Periphery song. It’s really got everything you could want from them. The absolomb demo version from like 2008 or 09 was my first taste of periphery and it got me hooked. I think the video is still up on KZfaq, it has a green aurora as the visual part of the video. When this finished version was put on P3 I was instantly in love. Easily my favorite track on the album.

This is one of my favorites off of P3. It's got a lot of early-Periphery energy to it, and my god the orchestral sections in the middle and end are so, so friggin good. It's one of those forever-chills song.
@DocturNull
@DocturNull 2 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, there was a track that Bulb(Misha solo project before periphery if you didn't know, it's like 50/50 with people so I get it) called Absolomb. And I think this song was built off the bones of that later on, and basically brought back and modified for the progression of Misha, and it being a full band. So that might be where the early Periphery vibes come from, possibly. Regardless I definitely agree with you, and it's a favorite of mine

It was almost 3 years ago when Rick Beato broke this song down and got me into metal. I still don't know any more about musical theory and composition, but I understand a lot of the more intuitive things you describe about this track. What's special to me about this song is how orchestral it is. The ending is beautiful, of course, and probably a key reason I kept giving it a chance until I decided I liked it, but there is more depth in the rest of the song too. I saw a comment one time describing the sound in the final verse, and it's hard to hear over Spencer's insane vocals, but there's a very grand, epic orchestral sound mixed in with the metal. I don't know if this is one of my true favorite Periphery songs, but I'm glad it was my first. I kinda feel like he should do Ragnarok next 😁

I was already into a good bit of prog, but had been skirting around Periphery with this weird idea that they were more mainstream than actually prog, but Beato doing this song broke the ice for me and I fucking love the band now. If I had to pick one favorite, it may be Absolomb because it started my journey and is still just a phenomenal track. So stoked to see Geebz breaking it down too.

I don't know if someone already pointed it out, but the arrangement at the end is actually a foreshadow of what's to come in the context of the album. The end here is actually the main hook for the song "Lune" of that same album. It's just played with guitars in Lune. The song "The way the news goes" of that same album has a piano arrangement of that part at the end, too. So it's a recurring theme of the album.

That killer bass sound comes from the pedal made by Karnivool's John Stockman! Check out the Alpha/Omega pedal. edit: Also, the drummer is Matt Halpern, and he's awesome. He has a drum playthrough of the followup to this song, Lune, that's a really good illustration of how a percussionist can create an emotional part that supports an equally emotional song. May be worth your time, Geebz.

The fact that you mentioned the ambient guitar parts they often utilize at 8:30 is cool because it does go under appreciated by some amongst all the chugging riffs/solo's & leadwork sometimes. It is actually kind of as you described in their live sound because that they typically have 2 guitars chugging the rhythm parts hard L/R and then the ambient clean parts usually down the centre, one of the cool capabilities with having 3 guitarists for sure. This whole record is quite varied & interesting, you can tell Misha definitely upped the cinematic/triumphant aspects with all the orchestral arrangements & such. Interesting tidbit the section at 10:15 is a call back to an older track of theirs (I forget the name though haha)

I've made the suggestion before, but it bears repeating again. I would love to see a review on My Famed Disappearing Act by Thank You Scientist. I feel like it's something that's right up your alley.

Thank You Scientist is incredible. Severely underrated band. So much talent and originality!

Either that or Blood on the Radio. That being said, all their stuff is great. I'd also strongly recommend Native Construct, namely "Come Hell or High Water"

"And Yet, This Man Will Soar" by Misha Mansoor. If you dig the composition in Periphery, you'll surely love it.

Dude your videos have completely invaded my recommended videos and I just gotta say your videos are super interesting and this is one of the easiest subscribes I've ever done haha. Anyways not sure if you do requests or anything but I highly recommend you check out Art of Life by X Japan, it's a short 29 minute song but it's so damn good. I think you'll really appreciate the piano solo

Always nice to circle back to Periphery! Such an intelligent band! Besides the two suggestions I have been putting up here (MESHUGGAH - i / THE FIVE HUNDRED - Walls of Jericho) it would be very cool if you'd get to know some old school death-metal bands! BLOODBATH CANNIBAL CORPSE DEATH ENTOMBED GORGUTS IMMOLATION MORBID ANGEL SUFFOCATION 🤘

Great choice, Geebz! Definitely not a Periphery song I expected you to react to, but glad ya did. I'd recommend Omega next. Next to Reptile, I think it's their best song. 🤘

Great explanation of solo structure! It took me a long time to realize that's how to listen to solos, but ever since I learned to listen that way I've got such a new appreciation for many solos.

So… now you have to listen to ‘Lune’. It’s what the orchestral outro of this song is pulling from. SO interested to hear your take on it! Three flavors to choose from… Studio… kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rtp8dr1jxJOmlZs.html Live play through… kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jK6kdMqT3Zyrdpc.html Live in London… kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9qgYMuCypu0Z30.html I kind of recommend listening to all three in that order. It’s just insane how great these musicians are. I can never get enough periphery. So glad that you are delving deeper into them!
