Күн бұрын

Today’s feature was once in line to be the next Kevin Durant. Some even called him a stronger Tracy McGrady l. Two comparisons that wouldn’t last very long after leaving high school as a top 10 prospect. When projecting players 3 things I usually ask myself and notice instantly about a prospect is how does he stack up physically among his peers right now, what skills has he developed to this point that makes him elite at his level, and what strengths does he have now that can translate if he were at the highest level right now. Key word, now. We tend to forget about that looking too far into a prospect’s career, not realizing that missing any of those things gives him the chance to be a bust in the NBA. Perry Jones was elite and garnered a lot of attention at the high school level because physically he was already levels ahead of his peers. He went on to Baylor and had a calm 2 years before becoming the 28th pick by the OKC Thunder. What Happened after that? Perry Jones Was Supposed To Be The Next McGrady? Stunted Growth

The league is tough. Reminds of a bunch of other guys. Not sure if you did this one or not, but if you remember C.J. Leslie, he's another guy that was projected NBA 1st round by some mock drafts in 2013. Ended up going undrafted out of NC State from that 2013 team with my guy Ryan Harrow and Lorenzo Brown. Flamed out shortly afterwards. Dominic Artis comes to mind too. Got caught up in some mess during his time at Oregon and never really got back on track.

One thing i learned about the NBA is you need to find your role within the team. He may not have been the next “go to” guy but he could’ve honed his skills as a 3 and D big. A lot of young prospects with natural athletic gifts get pressured to be the next _____ and if they’re not they’re considered a “bust” I.e Andrew Wiggins, Perry Jones, Dennis Smith jr etc

Imo jones’ biggest hurdle definitely seems to be his confidence. He clearly had the natural athleticism and size but not the coordination and in game iq that other top tier players in his age group had. Imo that probably became evident in college and the league. He also never developed a consistent 3pt shot nor was a good enough defender to be a reliable 3 and D option. Just goes to show that being tall and athletic won’t always guarantee success in the pros

@elliemyers6435
@elliemyers6435 7 ай бұрын
Funny thing about Duhon is that his growth got stunted during college, not the NBA. He was a SUPER high recruit, a starter on Duke's 2001 title team, then never reached the potential he was supposed to...BUT he still got drafted in the second round and had a very solid like 11 year career in the NBA as a backup, spot starter. So, I'm not sure if his growth was ultimately stunted, given he had a long, fairly productive NBA career.

Well spoken about Perry Jones. If you ever get around to it, could you please do Reece Gaines . He played at University of Louisville. He was drafted 15th pick in the LeBron James draft 2003. He was the player that gave Dewayne Wade fits at Marquette. I remember when he was asked a question, about who was his biggest matchup in college. It was Reece Gaines. You can see they took different paths in the NBA. Reece couldn't get it together playing under DOC Rivers at Orlando. I appreciate you reading this, if you get to read it. I think a different college in texas would've been better for him. He went to Baylor at a time when they had multiple guys who were the same height and interchangable. Playing on a "positionless", athletic team at that time wasn't good for his development.They played like an AAU stacked team. the only position they needed solidified was PG. He needed to be on a team where he could dominate the wing/one-side of the court by himself. Maybe Texas or Texas Tech would've gave him that space. Then his mid-range and driving to the basketabll would've been better coming into the NBA. My Pistons would've been a great spot for a developing wing player at that time.
