“Up” is one of my favourite Peter Gabriel albums. Songs like “Growing Up” & “The Barry Williams Show” are catchy, while others, like “Signal to Noise”, “Sky Blue” & “I Grieve” are more meditative. Great musicianship on all the tracks, as you’d expect. Influences from EDM to R&B to world music. It’s less commercial than “So” and “Us”, more like “Security” in that regard.

Peter Gabriel is simply a genius. I recently discovered a band who are really hard to categorise, called Big Big Train. Genesis with a brass band? Every prog lover should check out the 23 minute epic The Underfall Yard from the album of the same name. If your sick of love songs, then this is really interesting because it is about Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the famous victorian engineer. Interesting fact about the singer, David Longdon, who was on the short list to replace Phil Collins as the lead singer of Genesis.

Who else would do Signal to Noise then you and describe it that well! My favorite Reactor i've seen so far and i saw a lot over the last two years!

Ahhh Peter...fantastic.

PG’s albums have progressively improved to the point that his genius is rarely surpassed. Up, to me is by far his most complete work. The amazing thing is during his solo career he has produced only 6 or 7 albums. Forget his collaborations and soundtracks while good, it is the quality of his music and depth that is most impressive.

I remember seeing PG at Wembley arena on this tour. Best use of a zorb ball in a concert ever. Signal to noise is a key audio engineering term, looking at the thing you want (signal) versus the undesirable by-product (noise). PG is a huge producer/ engineer so it’s no doubt a term he heard a lot. A beautiful song with (typically) great lyrics. Not probably my favourite on this album. Nusrat Ali Fateh Khan (NFAK) was an incredible singer, recorded a lot on PG’s Real World label. I see him live (with Party) at WOMAD back in the early 90s. Along with Marta Sebestyen one of my favourite (world) singers. PG did the soundtrack for Scorsese’s Passion of Christ, and used a lot of Middle Eastern artists/ sounds for that. I’m not sure if overall opinions, but I rate Passion, Up and Us very highly. Plenty for you to explore. If you’ve not heard or seen the video for PG’s Sledgehammer, well that is one to try...just to see something a little different from him.

This was an interesting and cool song for the most part, I liked it. I know most of PG's radio friendly hits, unfortunately I never really dove into his music. I suspect there's a treasure trove just waiting for me, whenever I decide to visit his music. Lyrically, I was thinking about how noise distorts the truth in a political forum. Unfortunately people aren't interested in the truth and that's a shame. I liked this reaction, very well thought out, props Justin. Through this channel, I've discovered music forgotten or undiscovered. What I'm listening to presently is "Camel" Someone suggest I listen to "Stationary Traveler" and loved it so much, I'm working on playing the song on the guitar presently. Another genre of forgotten music came from the Al Stewart reaction. The Folk genre, there's so much there from radio play but also so much buried worth digging up.

This song went unnoticed to me for a long time, and now is my favorite one from all his work! I love many things from this song. I love Nusrat's voice I love the silence at 4:46 I love the drums starting at 7:24 I love how it gets more and more intense And every time I listen to it I discover new things. I think this is a song that might require more than one listen for some people. Definitely is not so commercial friendly, like "Sledgehammer", "Steam", "Big Time", etc., what doesn't mean those are not excellent pieces. But I feel like this is one of the biggest Peter's artistic expressions. I agree with this song being "cinematic", immersing you into another world. I loved your review! I hugely love PG and the array of top drawer artists that collaborate with him to create these wonderful pieces. Never heard anything from his whole catalogue that I did not find something interesting in and often the sublime. PS. this sounded much better on your channel than some of the earlier stuff you put out.

Wasn't sure about it at the beginning but it grew on me as it went along. Loved hearing Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, ( always loved him), and then it built and by the end I was all in. As for new music, I'm using this channel and suggestions from other commenters to discover some new stuff and it's being fruitful. If I had to say someone that I got into recently, (which was not really what I thought I'd like), I'd say Stormzy who is a British Grime artist which is well out of scope of what I like normally. Well done. Thank. you. I find this. one difficult to listen to, although the release at the end is immense. I have been through and witnessed difficult times. Gabrials voice is heart rending. The noise pervades even the orchestral intros giving a somber view and a sense of loss. . The Percussion is spacious. the strikes are almost visceral. Give in to your Souls plea. Only then does the light break and a promise of hope caress's us. The cut Greeving off the same album, is so sad.I had put the album into the dusty back bin, Thank you for the chance to hear it again

The most fun band I have recently heard is Saint Motel. Great horns and rhythm section. My intro to them was in the movie "Mr. Right", with the infectious "Just My Type".

His three most powerful tracks if you want a journey are Family Snapshot, Wallflower and This one.

Peter Gabriel is a deep well. Im not going to attempt to rank his work. Hes one of those just follow him and see where he goes type of artists. Many layers and surprises. I will say "sledgehammer" gets alot of props for the music video (rightfully so) but "Big time" which has a similar style does not. Extremely fun video and song to listen to. From red rain, to games without frontiers, this guy shines. Now the eastern man you mentioned that helped with the vocals (nussarat ?) he was admired by many including Jeff Buckley who hopefully youre familar with (best known for his cover of Hallelujah) but had an extreme vocal range and top music talent. No genre defined him he could go from opera to grundge in the same breath. The production quality of his album "grace" is masterful and pure. First learned of him while watching an interview with the lead singer of R.E.M. they asked what he listened to and he replied, Jeff Buckley because he has one of the best voices ive ever heard. To me the smoothest voice is Sam Cooke in "a change is gunna come" but he never did anything but soul music where Buckley branched out. Listen to anything i wrote about and youll be better for it.

An instrumental version of "Signal to Noise" was used by Scorcese in the opening Winter battle scene of "Gangs of New York". "Up" was an uneven album. Some highlights but also some terrible lows, such as his weak and off-key falsetto on the final track. The "noise" here and Gabriel's warning against it is an echo of the great Punk song "On the Air" off his mostly weak second album, "Scratch" from 1978. Peter's best albums are 1980's "Melt" (his third eponymous album), 1982's "Security"/"Mask" (#4) and "Us" from 1992. His "Secret World Live" video is from the 1993 "Us" tour and will blow you away.

Peter is one of my musical hero's as his music is more a religious experience than just notes. This track is a perfect example. Peter can marry middle eastern/Indian Ragga with electronica like no one else. Having seen every tour since Security there's nothing like a Peter show. This vocal performance by the incomparable Nusrat would be a year before he passed. Seeing this live gave me chills. One of his best tours ever and that's saying a lot.

Very interesting comments. The idea that PG's music is cinematic is true. The comments on space in his music is also very true. He has a lot of tracks with sparse arrangments that builds up. About the cinematics, PG was always about the combination of music and visual. In 1974, he was contacted by William Friedkin (director of The Exorcist/French Connection, etc.) to write a screenplay. His attention was catched by stories written by Peter on the backcover of Genesis Live. It was the first crack that eventually led him to leave the band (as well as many other personnal reasons). A part of PG's carreer is linked with movie soundtracks. The best for me being ''The Last Temptation of Christ'' for the movie of Scorsese (1988). World music influences at its peak.

Sunday, November 3rd. I am confident, I have no reason to be suspicious. I got time: Justin has just finished "A trick of the tail" then I presume that before he sends a new video about Genesis or its satellites, I can go back outside confidently without looking behind my shoulder. Outside, it is 31° C, no need socks (that's why I do not have), nor fireplace either. Although it will be soon, the mood is not especially to Christmas. And then suddenly... Bam ! I get a present! A wonderful gift. The more it's unexpected, the more it makes it even better. "Signal to noise"! So, one word: MERCI. Though you couldn't tell (because my comment is 15 kilometers long) but this song leaves me speechless every time. It leaves me speechless (hmm). It blows my mind and I can't help but close my eyes and let myself be drowned by these percussions, these strings that put my guts upside down, this climb that never ends ... Aaaaah. Curiously, this is not the song wich would come first into my mind if I wanted to suggest a title to listen to as part of your videos. But you did it (thanks to Gabriel Moreyra by the way). A curious fact : Though I know that for excellent reasons, at least once you've said you'd rather listen to the studio versions of the songs, even if someone suggesting a live version instead. I don't know why (probably I had in my mind the live TV version of VH1 which is the one when was recorded the voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), when I launched your video I talked to myself : I would love to see Justin discover the live version of the song "Growing Up", because on the visual side, although it brings nothing to the song, is frankly an experience that does pretty well discover what makes Peter Gabriel is Peter Gabriel, and it's still spectacular. But on the other hand, I would advise against live versions (anywhere) from "Signal to Noise". And what the first comment say (from Wagner) was quite the opposite: the live version is better than the studio, while I find that any live version of this song is less good (except the case of the video where we see Nusrat, obviously, for reasons other than purely musical). And then, two comments later, John says is favorite song on the album was "More than this". This is precisely the song that I hate the most, not only in this album but probably of all its production. I do not dwell on the why, it's a question of feeling. This is on the rare Peter Gabriel's songs that I could throw in the trash, may be the only one. Justin, your analysis is particularly brilliant for a first listen. You made my day a good day (even if Signal to noise is not properly the best optimistic song ever). A last word : clever and kind of you to have done a reminder about what you've heard before.

This song is a weird one, but then Gabriel has lots of weird songs and I love most of them including this one. It reminds me a little of the Passion album which you should do on this channel! Most of the songs on Passion flow together, so I suggest just doing a side at a time. Try Side 1 and see what you think. Back to the Up album, it is far more artsier than So or Us. I would suggest "Darkness" for your next song to do off of Up. As for bands that I recently discovered, River Whyless is probably the most recent and that was a while back. The are an acoustic/folk/rock band. I'm not sure what I would recommend, probably something off their 2nd or 3rd album. I'd have to think about it.

All of his albums are great. Each take you on a journey in their own special ways. No Genesis pun intended.

The style of the track reminds me of his work on the album Passion, which is mellower but cinematic as well (it was for a movie after all). I don't know if I really love this track but like you say PG always does something interesting with his music.

My latest musical discovery: "My wanderings in the Weary Land" by the Waterboys. I vaguely knew of that band, but only liked a couple of songs. But this one is a masterpiece.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's vocals were actually taken from a live performance of this particular song. It was an early, very different version played at a special VH-1 show in 1996. Some of my favorite Peter Gabriel's songs are "Here Comes the Flood" , "Humdrum", and the whole second solo album.

Great in depth review of what some would call a difficult song. A good one to listen to from this album would be "The Barry Williams Show" Before this album was one called "So". It has the tracks most people would consider his most commercial - Big Time & Sledgehammer. The majority of the rest of his output before this album was film soundtracks and live albums. I was lucky enough to go and see him when he was touring a celebration of the So album in 2014 using most of the musicians that toured when it was first released in 1986/7. One of the highlights of my 40 year concert going life.

It's interesting that so far you have focused on Gabriel's more textured and environmental recordings. Be sure to check out some of his catchier pop and rock songs like "Solsbury Hill," "Shock the Monkey," "Games Without Frontiers," and "Digging in the Dirt." Both his 1980 'melting face' album and "So" are amazing full length recordings with great variety and repeatability.

My most recent discovery is a re-discovery: the past week I've been playing ABBA songs non-stop. Another reactor (JBLETHAL TV, really nice guy) started reacting to ABBA, and that prompted me to go through their entire catalogue (97 songs by my counting). I've always been a fan and I was familiar with 75% of their material, but now I've found a whole new bunch of hidden gems. What amazes me is not only how consistently good their music is, but also how diverse it is. Standouts that I didn't know before are "Watch Out" (glamrock!), "My Mama Said" (soul!), "Hole in Your Soul", "Elaine", "Hey, Hey Helen", "Should I Laugh or Cry", and "I've Been Waiting for You". One song I already knew but most people don't is "I'm a Marionette". An scathing song about the music industry. You should react to it, it's awesome. Staying in Scandinavia, an artist I discovered a few years ago is Susanne Sundfør. Very talented and versatile artist, and one of the best female voices of the moment. A good starting point is "White Foxes".

I’ll take you at your word about repeating requests so they stick in your mind! Richard & Linda Thompson’s “Shoot Out the Lights” and “Dimming of the Day/Dargai” - or indeed anything by the duo, or by Richard Thompson solo. Seeing that you are currently exploring folk music, Richard Thompson is a great option for you. Founding member of the British band Fairport Convention (the originators of the “Folk/Rock” genre), and a superlative guitarist (whether acoustic or electric), he is a legend of the folk scene, and a brilliant and consistent songwriter. Other songs of RT’s you may want to try are: “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” (album “Rumour and Sigh”) “Night Comes In” (album “Pour Down Like Silver”, with wife Linda Thompson) “A Sailor’s Life” (actually a Fairport Convention rendition of a traditional English song, vocals by Sandy Denny, but an extended guitar solo by Richard Thompson - the song that kicked off the Folk/Rock genre in 1969 from their album “Unhalfbricking”). PS - More Peter Gabriel, please - the man is a genius, and your thoughts and analysis are really perceptive and enlightening. And of course, anything by the wonderful Kate Bush!

There's a degree of spirituality and cultural rhythms his music incorporates that taps into the our universal consciousness. He doesn't steal these indigenous sounds so much as he (like Clapton with blues) reveals them to the main stream. I appreciate his artistic constancy so much! I love artist that make you feel something and give you a bit of education at the same time. He has a unique edge that can't be copied or duplicated. Gabriel is fantastic and his first 4-5 solo albums were listened to repeatedly... then I lost him, do not know why but this song is as well really in my style, I have honestly not heard it before but I love it. You asked for suggestions. I would like to recommend a new group for you. They just released their second album called Queen of the Murder Scene, that is a conceptual album about a situation that goes from obsession to frustration to madness to the final end. They are between hard rock and some progressive rock with a bit early 90 rock influences on some songs in their riffs. The QOTMS album is to listen to song by song from start to end as the story is building up progressively and the theme gets darker and more psychotic per song. The group is called The Warning and they have gathered a small but steady growing fan base. They are totally independent and as for now almost fully fan sponsored by Patreon and KickStarter . First song from QOTMS would be Dust to Dust that actually is a prologue. You’ll get it when you’ll listen to it and the TWA will fill you in with comments explaining more. The whole album is great. In fact I would go so far as to say it's one of my favorite PG albums, perhaps it IS my favorite, though it's hard to decide since they're all great (except for maybe the second one, which was a bit weak). PG found his voice with his third album, melt, and I mean that quite literally because had vocal lessons in between his second and third album that improved his voice dramatically. But Melt is where he really started incorporating world influences into his music and that's kind of been his thing ever since. And although Melt was probably his significant album in terms of finding his sound, the albums since have subsequently improved on the prior. So was his Peak commercially, but I think Us and Up are actually better albums than So. Peter Gabriel is a perfectionist and he puts years of work into his albums to make sure they don't disappoint.

Peter Gabriel is really good at using negative space in his songs -- especially on this album. I highly suggest 'No Way Out,' also from this album, as a great example of this. The absence of instrumentation becomes conspicuous from being missing. Considering that this album's main theme explores mortality, the use of negative space becomes quite significant. As with those who have passed away, that they are no longer with us seems to make their presence even more noticeable. It is a sad irony that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is featured on this album considering its themes. (If memory serves me correctly, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the first artist -- besides Gabriel himself -- who had an album produced on Gabriel's own Real World Records. I remember being quite surprised, years afterwards, when it seemed that Khan was getting a bit of mainstream attention -- then suddenly, it seemed, it was announced that he died. As I said above -- since repetition yields benefits -- I highly recommend 'No Way Out' from Up.

The song you listened to, script for a jesters tear, is from their very first album, with fish. I really like the new era, with Steve hogarth as the new front man. So I would love you see you listen to some of their epics, like "The new Kings", from their latest album FEAR, or "The Invisible Man" (I could go in for a while, but I won't :p). An interesting arresting moody song... cool to paint to. Dug it. One song, from Peter, I really was surprised by is, “ The Tower That Ate People” from the soundtrack of “The Red Planet”. Guess it has a version on “OVO” album. I have to hear it periodically... have to. Newest discovery is Big Big Train. I love XTC, the band, and am very sad of its demise for several years. (check out “It’s Nearly Africa “ on English Roundabout. I happened on a mention of Dave Gregory, guitarist with XTC and now with Big Big Train since 2004. Lots to ketchup on. Yes, Genesis, others in the prog rock vein are influences. Delving... peace and music.

So I'm writing my review of this song before I hear yours (yes, I paused the video after the song!). I was/am a big fan of PG, had his first 6 albums, the first four were the best especially #3, the melted cover. Family Snapshot is probably my favorite song off that album but it's all brilliant. I confess while this song was good ( very impressed with his vocals at his age) I was getting bored by the end of the song. I just feel he's done this type of song before. But I guess it's like people really enjoying Star Wars: The Force Awakens, if they had never seen the original Star Wars: A New Hope first. Anyway, good song, just feel like the theme is rehashed for me having heard so much PG before. I recommend listening to his 1983 double live album Peter Gabriel Plays Live, one of the best live albums ever. But first ENCHANT, AT DEATH'S DOOR. From the album A Blueprint of the World. *Peter Gabriel "Mercy Street"* A recent album I've fallen hard for is "Giants of All Sizes" by Elbow. Very good progressive chord structures. "Up" by Gabriel was a slight letdown for me. I miss Manu's drums and Lanois' production. This song is good. There's an offshoot instrumental version which appears on the soundtrack to "Rabbit-Proof Fence".

This album is fantastic! The only dud is The Barry Williams Show. Everything else is pretty good to great!

I really liked what you’ve said about this song. I can see the social value more clearly in the lyrics after your analysis.The song is a bit too bleak and minimalistic for my musical sensibilities. He’s got much better songs. “Growing Up” from this album is more enjoyable purely from a musical perspective for me. PG was always a dynamic performance artist and probably wrote with this in mind. I saw the “Growing Up” tour. I wish he’d do a new album. It’s been too long! Peter Gabriel went through many years of therapy. The lyrics on this song sound cathartic. The earlier album called “Us” also had songs about painful past experiences that were cathartic. I think it’s a much better album than “Up.” Both are on the darker side at times but “Us” has more light and hope. Good choice from a relatively weak album, Justin. The subject matter, at least on one level, can be considered a sequel to "On The Air" from Gabriel's second solo album, the 1978 release produced by Robert Fripp (leader of King Crimson). That also was a relatively weak album, but the first two tracks had a Punk Rock energy to them that would blow away most folk who know Gabriel from his ballads or his Pop hits. So I recommend that you listen to "On The Air" and its immediate successor on the record, "D.I.Y."

I've always admired PG's creativity and bravery but I can't claim to like this. There are plenty of moments that interest me and are new to my ears but it was hard to listen to for me. Having said that I do wonder at the intelligence and originality.

I honestly struggle with a lot of Gabriel's solo stuff. Totally appreciate that the guy always follows his muse and artistic vision, but I just want to like it all more than I actually do. Solsbury Hill is a classic and I love it, but that was him at his most joyful and euphoric. Too much of what came after I found rather bleak.

Could also be that the "signal" or important message is getting lost in the noise of social media that is lost in frivolous celebrity gossip BS. Turn up the signal - wipe out the noise. "Receive and transmit" to me means love, compassion and humanity.
