Peter, thanks for talking openly with your relationship to substances. It's definitely helpful for destigmatization, which is helpful for everyone! People with ADHD brains tend to self-medicate either via chemical means (e.g. stimulants like caffeine or other drugs like THC) or behavioral means (e.g. impulsive spending, gambling, extreme sports) . I was personally obsessed that I seemingly couldn't be as productive as my peers, even though I was working so hard all the time. I would worry about getting stuff I "needed" or "should" do all the time, struggled to do it, but would easily dump endless amounts of hours into new interests and hobbies (obsessions). Even if it was as an adult, learning about the actual hand I've been dealt in terms of brain chemistry was a big help. I would encourage others that struggle with those things to look into what ADHD actually is, not the cultural caricature most people think of.

Yes! And Autistics have similar problems. I wasn't diagnosed with autism until I was in my thirties, but knowing why and how I'm different from other people was such a relief. I read so much about autism and aspergers syndrome (same thing) while waiting for my evaluation, and I understand myself much better now.

@@portlyoldman same type of experience. I know it's probably over diagnosed, but I had so much trouble all through school, even in first grade. It was bewildering to work so hard and have everyone say I wasn't "applying" myself. Concerta changed my life and now I know what it feels like to be sharp. Kind of a personal Flowers for Algernon experience.

@@artistblock8538 I didn't mean to offend you if you found my word choice disagreeable. However, that has little to do with my sentiment. My point is that these substances can indeed be used to positive effect, but for some people like myself, they can be merely a bandaid for a different underlying issue. I needed to learn some things about myself, specifically how my brain chemistry is naturally a little atypical, before I was able to address the actual issue.

Meditation, brother. Mindfulness meditation. Yt it and just start slow. 5-15 min in the a.m. and work your way up. It changed my life when I cleaned up from drugs and booze. Just an idea. I love you all.

Can support that, meditation really does it when you don't feel free to rest unless your drugged up. Its also a creative enforcer when you learn to sit with it, I feel like some perfectionist blocking elements get reduced by it. Like those that always kept me from overdrawing a line to manifest a shape I was inspired to, cause I felt it would make the thing look ugly nasty. Though in my experience as I'm now reminded watching how peter draws, the best things turn up if you just don't care if this drawing right now is coming out good or not.

“Round” is a descriptor used in wine tasting. Pretentious? Totally. But it makes some sense; imagine a marble in your mouth. It rolls around in your mouth smoothly, not catching on any particular part of your tongue. A round mouthfeel is one that is smooth, that rolls around on the tongue without setting off any alarms like “sweet” or “bitter” or “sour.”

On the cannabis situation: Yeah it sounds relatable, you talked about finding balance earlier and how you could never really find it, so naturally the goal would be to moderate cannabis use, and neither smoke all the time nor completely cease use, as both of these would be an obvious imbalance, even to the practice of smoking itself. I would say keep on smoking if it helps you manage stress levels, and don’t be too down on yourself that you ‘have to use drugs’ to achieve this, none of us are perfect, and perhaps this is nothing more than just one of your personal flaws, the inability to regulate stress. Whatever choice you choose to make, the point should be to make it without doubt, fear or worry. Best of luck for the future in regards to this. Love the videos ❤️ ~ Someone who is high right now.

I enjoyed you being puzzled by the drama/cooking show and 100 % agreed with you about Dark. I think I would be better off stop watching after season one and just keep thinking about it all. The credits to that were an undisputed masterpiece. Also, about your work situation - for a long time I had the same problem, but I figured that if I set a goal for the day, then after completing it I would feel like I earned my time to rest and I wouldn't beat myself up for it. I agree with the cannabis sentiment. I would work all day, work all night then smoke a bit and fall asleep, repeat. I hate being idle, I can't relax, I suck at vacations. I'm stuck between work and burnout most of the time. I don't know what the balance is. I love getting obsessed and pushing the limits, I don't switch gears very well, my mind gets stuck on one thing and I'm a constant overthinker. This is probably why it's easy to relate to you. I recently have laid off cannabis and it has highlighted how I just use work in the same way, to escape, but I don't know what I'm running from. Thanks for the videos! Hey peter, a quick tip in terms of feeling like you can't relax and take time for yourself without getting high, I just wanted to stop by and recommend you try CBD. It is a part of the Marijuana plant, that doesn't get you high. I take it for pain, anxiety, and depression and it helps a lot with me mainting a better balance with the important things in life. Before I started taking it I would stress myself, and try to complete overwhelming ammounts of school work. I fell out of love with my hobbies. I quit drawing, quit guitar, and hadn't talked to my friends in months. After taking it it had a considerable effect on my mood, anxiety, and focus, helping me restore a balance between work and play. If you do decide to try it, I recommend full spectrum cbd, which does have .03% of THC in it, but it is infinitesimal overall, and not enough to get you high. It's important to research proper dosing In my expierience it's easier to under-do it that to over-do it. But it greatly helps me without having any high what so ever.

hey thanks for talking about your relationship with weed. i’ve been in and out of struggling with it as well and it’s really helpful to hear you talk about it in a realistic way that is neither glorifying it or demonising it. i’m in a good place with it at the moment but your thoughts on it kind of made me realise how much i wasn’t okay at other times when i thought i was. i hope you are able to find out how to make it work best for you. good luck and thank you for your honesty and your videos in general 💕

I work on an oil rig, and your right, some of them are floating. The one I'm on is a floater obviously anchored when we drill. It's my mission now to make the transition to drill for ink, that's a cool idea. I don't do weed any more, but used to alot back in the day. It had the opposite effect on me though, become very focused and fixated and able to still function quite well. Great drawing Peter, love your work!!

The all or nothing bit reminded me of myself and my struggles with adhd. I always have to complete something in one sitting or I won't do any of it... I'll start many pieces of artwork and never finish them because I lost my motivation. Or for assignments, I'll start something and then get so panicked by how terrible the process is, i'll put it off.. then it's due soon and I end up doing like 2 weeks worth of work in one night. ☹️ Not every single time, but it happens too often. During the whole process, I know how important it is and how much I want to finish the artwork or assignment but I'll do literally anything else before. I'm not sure if I'm adding anything of substance here. I hope whoever is reading this has a nice day or night! 💖

Hi Peter, I really enjoyed this talk and found myself relating to your drug or weed, I guess, "issue". It's really difficult to have a desire you want in the back of your mind while being checked out on a substance. Stimulants that add to how you feel, often times making you feel better, but the situation is not better. At first it seems to work for a bit, but as you see the situation doesn't change and only another factor is added, the true, and almost deeper reality hits you as you begin to realize this drug doesn't really help all too much and you're still pretty damn stuck, feeling almost as or even worse. But having a good conversation and break can help to clear your mind and start on a better track.

Don't do what you don't want. You're right. The content will suffer, bc you won't be into what you're doing. Just do what you want and I will enjoy. I say "I" bc I can't speak for others, but I can say that I'm pretty sure they'd agree. Keep up the good work.

I am going through a very similar weed situation myself, and I must say this video was really good to hear specifically knowing that there others going through a similar situation made me feel a little less paranoid about my own? if that makes sense. Keep doing what you’re doing brother I love your content.

Hey Peter, I commend you on your introspection and I encourage you to keep doing so! I believe that everyone needs balance in their lives. I have read of theories that profess the instigation of cancer has come from excessive use of substances! Be they foods, drugs, even bodily actions! Kinda out there, but it makes ya think! Drugs are not bad or good they preform a function and your use or abuse of them determines how your body functions while taking them. Caffeine is a drug and why some are against coffee! You must do you, I believe that only you can determine your own desires and you will be the master of your own life. WoW, out there a bit but I am glad you are doing this podcast and I hope that you will continue to create your art and sharing your views with us in video and audio forms. Please take care and be safe out there.

Loved this episode Peter! Thought I could share some insight. I work for a specialty coffee roaster! The tasting notes you’re talking about are all standardized words from the Specialty Coffee Tasting Wheel! Words like ‘Round’ are actually standard words we all have agreed on to use within the industry. As you get deep into it, they actually make a whole lot of sense! A key to remember is they’re all meant to compare to other Coffee rather than other flavors. I actually know a few people at Counter Culture they’re an awesome crew!

Peter, I can relate to so many things you say regarding creativity, substances, pacing etc. I never really cared whether one's alone with their thoughts or not, but now I do, partially thanks to you and your stream. This one was really a punctuation what I've been feeling for a while. Thank you for being there! Also, I like your works. All the best

I struggle with letting myself rest as well- it's especially hard when you're an artist because you can do work at home at any time, rather than having a job out of the house where you specifically go to work. When you are able to work from home it makes you feel like you're on the clock all the time, or SHOULD be on the clock all the time. I've found a good way to combat that is to plan out work times and rest times a week in advance. Then when I rest I know it's not just me being lazy, it's a time I specifically scheduled for rest. Another thing that helps is taking yourself on dates to go to the book store or window shop or just an aimless drive. That takes you out of the house so you can't even be tempted to work. I know you didn't ask for advice and forgive me if this is crossing a boundary, but I hope that you can get some use out of the things that helped me! Good luck and we all love and support you
