I think you had the drill going in the wrong direction that’s why it was not grabbing and you were only drilling small little holes

Wood splits along the grain, start at end going lengthwise. Stand it up vertically and go top down, which is normally how you'd split with hatchet, axe, or wedge. It is strongest across grain which is side to side. IMHO, wedge splitting maul is fastest. Cheers

I've seen other videos for these and they seem to need to be run in reverse.

His drill is in reverse just like a screw when you have it in reverse, it comes out

*Nope. His drill is moving in the clockwise direction (which is the forward gear).* If you doubt me, feel free to play the video at ¼ speed & see for yourself. Fact. *To be clear: counterclockwise is the reverse/backward direction. 👍🏼*
