Have loved this series and this was a great one-stop for a lot of questions. It’d be nice to hear from some of the training staff and officers about what they think helps newcomers the most and even to hear from the staff going into phase 2 in various roles about what were the most important bits to focus on to excel in chosen roles, or what are common stumbling points and fixes for those going through phase 1.

I remember my Infantry faze 1, at Glencourse, Scotland. Then faze 2, ITB Strensal. Then Battalion, then retrained in the Signal Regimant. There was a massive difference in the way I was treated in the Signal Corp, to the Infantry. Didn't have to pick up rubbish, accommodation was better etc...I learnt to speak and write another language. I gained a fully qualified Law Degree. My HGV Licence. Rank! Knowledge! Garrila Warfare Skills learnt in Bosnia. The Doors were open in the Sigs, to progress in achieving your Green Lid, Maroon Berry and Sandy Berry in SF. It was a culture shock for me to hear people speaking in a different accent in Scotland, as I had never been out of my own Town before.. it was a new way of life and a harsh reality in learning a Soldier's Foundation, to adapt and overcome any situation. They even take you further, if you Volunteer for further development , to...shall we say, reprogram your Mind with counter Beliefs etc...to make you a better killing machine, as that is what a Soldier is trained to do foremost! I've been all over Europe and Africa. Seeing other Cultures. Placing Weapon Stashes in East Germany Establishing and evaluating "Rat Lines" in the Cold War. I've seen the Old and Bold, the difference between real Life and fictional Films. In SF, not saying I was, but the whole Picture of the Theatre Of War and how you can achieve more success as a small team, than you would in Battalion Strength. The best Weapon System you have on the Battle Field, is your Mind! With Surveillance, comes Knowledge. Over all, I wouldn't change my Military Career. It gave me a better, more productive Life in comparison to the dule, lonely Life I was leading...what did observe, was that Lads who had no Family, no emotional attachment, excelled in the Military Environment. There was no point in quitting, as there was nothing to go back to. You have a Roof over your Head, Food, company and the adventure! From an injured British War Veteran

Oh hell I remember that casualty stretcher experience during training my arse was hanging out, to this day I don’t know how I completed it. 30 years ago, just where has the time gone but would I do it again of course I would joining up was probably one of the best things I’d ever done. Anyone reading this and are considering a career with the best do it and stick at it and when your in training and finding things tough, dig in and don’t give up just keep saying to yourself things get easier as I progress and that tomorrow is another day make a mark on your calendar at your halfway point of training and work to that then it’s countdown to pass out parade. Good luck all and enjoy your new chosen careers.

in the 1980s we never had these different phases in basic training, as we did 14 weeks in the RA at Woolwich and after pass out we had 2 weeks summer hols as i passed out at the start of the summer break, then it was off to my regiment where i learned how to fire the rapier missiles as at the time i was in 22 air defence, but the kit the recruits have today in their basic training is a lot better to what we had, and the weapons today compared to our SLRs

My grandfather was a founding member of the SBS. He knew Ian Sterling and Paddy Maine and others who were the original members of of Britain’s Special Forces. He was originally in the Long Range Patrol Group in North Africa in WWII. He went on to become a Major, in the SBS and was awarded the Military Cross and Bar. (Which means he won it twice). The Military Cross is one down from the Victoria Cross. He was mentioned in Dispatches and is mentioned in every book I’ve read about the SBS. In some books he’s referred to as Captain Duncan because he wasn’t promoted until towards the end of the war. His name was George Duncan.

They just do an extra session at the end. So basic will probs last about 2 sessions split up within 6 months, each session or phase being 3 months, paras have to do an extra phase resulting in 3, 9 months. As opposed to regular infantry and other branches that just do the 2. Some do just phase 1 I think

End of the day mate there will be people that finish ahead of you and most likely behind, the fact you're aware of this and don't want to be last is already great and shows you're committed. Just don't cheat yourself get running 3-4 times a week variety of runs not just 2ks,5ks add 10ks add sprint sessions, do some weighted tabs get a mate to come with without weight to keep pace. Do them body weight exercises, you'll know if you're doing enough, if you get to bed and think oh I shouldn't have skipped that run etc then it's down to you just go for it mate, all the best

Use old pop 2l bottles filled with water as water can be emptied if needed on weighted tabs, you need a back pack with a frame so it doesn't wreck your back. Plenty of sit ups, pull ups and press ups, actually make that shit loads of press ups. But generally getting out on runs will help. Look up lessons that you will get such as map reading and marksman principles its boring as hell but it will give the edge on everyone else, and don't be afraid of speaking your mind, they love confidence, good luck bud!
