The Post spoke to some of those who lived through the Pol Pot regime at the world premiere of Angelina Jolie's new film, First They Killed My Father, in Siem Reap. The film chronicles some of the atrocities of the period, including mass killings, forced labour and the conscription of children as soldiers.

My mum was a surviver of this! She said the movie is so toned down to watch actually happened. But if they did show more detail it would probably be banned to watch. Babies would be bashed to death and hung on this tree until their necks crack, people resorted to eating the dead just to survive, pol pots army would rape kids and beat them a lot worse. My mum saw her brothers and sisters axed to death in front of her. She survived by fleeing during the bombing as well and knew were the mine bombs were she said she had to hide under dead bodies it was so sad!!!

Theblox Master I'm glad someone noticed! Lol It's very sad that all the educated got murdered :( I'm glad to hear that some survived we are very lucky to be here today. To be honest if I was going through what they did I wouldn't survive, I'm so weak minded My mum said her sister got executed at the very beginning when they all got told to leave the city for 3 days. They saw her wedding photo as she got married a week ago that she held onto and thought she was royalty coz of the wedding picture so they thought she had money and killed them. So sad and so brutal. What country is you and your family in now?

Theblox Master my dad was also a survivor, but things were never that bad. He said that they would never rape kids, but then again, he was luckily a poor farmer at the time and he grew up in West Cambodia, so things were kinder and better there. And also it depended on which region of Cambodia they were in, as the leader appointed by the Khmer Rouge decided on how severe things would be in his area. So things could be worse in other areas than the ones my dad lived in.

Oh my goodness, am so sorry to hear that !! Yes, from what you're saying it was very brutal...too much to be cast for publci view. ..very likely why it wasn't included- but who cares, a true story should be told the way it really happened. If audience isn't prepared for the truth then maybe they shouldn't watch it. Funny how the media feeds us such graphic imagery on world wide web, etc, yet refrains from providing whole truths at times it's really needed, like in biography.

Though the victim shouted for help, no one went to their aid. China and U.S at the back of Polpot. China government and U.S government must answer for their crime. Viet Nam volunteer troops marched to Cambodia to fight against Pol Pot to free the Cambodian people. Both the Cambodia and Vietnam were small countries who suffered "impositions" by wealthier nations.

I’m also Cambodian too. My family was working around the fields during the Khmer Rouge around 1975-1979 and after the Vietnamese invasion in Phnom Penh around January 1979, my family leave Cambodia to Thailand because they were sent to go to a refugee camp and I remembered that my grandparents had a hard time during the years of war by working hard labor and after the refugee camps in Thailand, they go to the United States in the state of Texas around 1982 and they go to a Christian church and around 1983, they drive to California around San Francisco- Oakland Bay Area and everyone gets together after the war in Cambodia ended. It was a very hard, difficult and sad time for them. I never knew how much Cambodia changed before and after Khmer Rouge because before Pol Pot Regime, the country was less corrupted and it was almost like a developed country like America, Canada, Thailand, Japan, Australia, or any country that’s rich and better governmental system.

Hi. I'm sorry for what your family had been through during that dark time and I'm glad to know that you guys are now settled in America. As a Vietnamese person, i'd like to know family's view on Vietnam during that time. To us, it was the war against Polpot, it was in Cambodia because that was where Polpot and the Khmer Rogue were and we helped to liberated Cambodia from the Polpot regime and then we went home. But you called it the Vietnamese invasion, which sounds like you didn't appreciate what we Vietnamese did there at all. Did your family hate the Vietnamese and wish they had never been there, if they did, i understand that it was because they were sent to a refugee camp but was there something else ? Thank you.

Nam Duc Dinh sorry abt the misinformation. No one think of it as the invasion but Cambodian think of Vietnamese rescue as a matter of interest. Which mean you guys decided to get rid of Pol Pot after they started to invaded you guys well being and after they start killing ur own people. Idk if this is a propaganda in the country or if it true but that all we know growing up. We also have the ideology of Khmer Rouge was started by communism and was heavily influenced by Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong. There are way more in depth involvement of those two than no one know other than the Cambodian. It is a taboo in Cambodia, we don’t go around talk abt that but everyone know abt it. Then we have our prime minister, Hun Sen, and if you asked any Cambodian, they said he is a Vietnamese government puppet. I’m gonna leave it at that cause I know a lot of Vietnamese who wonder why we have such a strong prejudice against you guys.

@@neathsuon3895 Thank you for the information. As a Vietnamese, I'm so sorry to hear that. However, I tend to think that the bottom line is, provided Vietnam fought Khmer out of their interest, it ended the Khmer Rouge massacre for the Cambodians. At least Vietnam helped saving lives and prevented the increase in the number of deaths during that period. As Cambodians partly dislike us for that reason, which is that Vietnamese came to rescue as a matter of interest, I'm really curious about if Cambodians ever feel thankful for our arrival and what do people in your country want?

the people did not hate vietnam bc they helped us with the khmer rouge, i mean who would hate for that reason? but its bc the people believed that vietnam invaded their country, even before the khmer rouge happened, the invading was non stop, and the reason polpot happened is because we helped vietnam with american war, and the american hated us so they bombed us as well, yup this pretty much is the reason, but i personally don’t hate the vietnamese people, cuz you all deserved respect!!
