Zack, that was one of the best photography videos I've seen in a long time. I've been shooting for a few years now (actually met you in dubai in '14) when I first started out. I've plateaued a while back and not really improved my shooting in a while now. These critique vids have really made me stop, think and recalibrate. Now my daughter is starting a photography course at school and I feel better placed to help her and myself improve. I understood the composition rules, triangle of exposure etc but what i want to teach her is how to look for a picture, how to look further and seek something new. A story, a new angle or a new idea. I'd rather she went to auto mode and jpg and focused one a creative aspect too, than studied photoshop. Those skills are complimentary in my mind. The art is in seeing the image, not manipulation later.

Wow, these are super-useful. Could watch them all day. (Subscribed!) Would you call these portfolio & web site critiques rather than photo critiques? “Photo critique” makes me think you’ll be going deeper on individual photos and you spend a lot of time on the gallery presentations. Just a titling & expectations critique of your critique. :-) Great content.
@ZackAriasATL
@ZackAriasATL 4 жыл бұрын
Noted! I totally get what you are saying. I like that “Photo Critique” is a short title and that’s sort of important in the online world. It get’s to the point fairly well but maybe it could be better defined. “Photography web site critique” is a little to wordy and long. “Web site critique” doesn’t quite get that it’s photo based.

You worked hard there Zack, I see the necessity in what you are doing, it is missing in the world of thumbs value judgement. An honest critique is difficult when artistic expression is to be measured and treading that line separating good work/bad work from my taste/your taste must be exhausting. I say exhausting because the value is in the truth perceived, taking the artist through the steps that reveal weak foundations, your critiques are deconstructions of technical and perceptual work of an artist learning/growing. By deconstructing rather than destructing, you allow the artist to rebuild his work to stand stronger

The photographer has to adopt an open mind if he is submitting his photos for critique or photo contests. Zack Arias may seem nitpicking to some viewers in the photo submissions by Nina or other photographers but to me Zack Arias is paying attention to small details. These small details though may not get noticed by Nina's clients who are happy with her work. However it may be a game changer in making or breaking a deal for corporae clients whose art directors are meticulous with small details to ensure excellent, consistent corporate image at all time. It's up to Nina or the participating photographers to adopt Zack Arias' comments or not in their work.

Sorry Zack, had to dislike this video. For Nina's portfolio in particular I thought you were being ultra-pernickety with some of your comments. Critiques at the end of the day are just subjective opinions, not an absolute rule. If push came shove I'm certain I could find fault with almost any photograph, even yours. But if they are loved by many ... then do those minor technicalities really matter ?
@ZackAriasATL
@ZackAriasATL 4 жыл бұрын
Yes... critiques are subjective. And yes, You can find all sorts of problems in my work. I have a hard time practicing what I preach! Critique and feedback though are crucial to learning and growing as a photographer. Sometimes there are slight little small things that you can do to elevate your work. They are things to think about the next time you are out shooting. Dislike the process if I make it personal and just eviscerate someone without giving any encouragement. I work hard to be critical but encouraging as well.
@djsuth7727
@djsuth7727 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZackAriasATL Thanks for the reply, and I agree with your comments.. Constructive criticism and feedback can certainly inform a photographer of alternative approaches to composing / editing an image. But it is still down to the photographer to decide which approach best fits their vision and target audience. A lot of feedback tends to be rather myopic, and ignores intent / context.
