PIAK Recovery Towbar Install on QE Pajero Montero Sport Mod

In today's episode of The Average Garage we install PIAK's Recovery Towbar to my QE pajero sport aka. Montero Sport
It was a fairly simple install, and the only modifications to the vehicle were the exhaust hanger needed bending and I needed to drill 2 holes in the chassis :)

Just got MY19 GLX a couple of weeks ago. Really wanted to get the PIAK full rear bar but have future plans that will require >2,500kg tow rating so I went with the HR concealed bar. Very happy I did what I did but definitely admit that the PIAK full rear bar looks the goods.

Thanks mate. Yeah my tow plans aren't huge so I didn't quite need the 3.1t so yeah. Protection offroad was more important haha

you'll be needing to check the GVM, the combined mass means if you tow the claimed 3T not just on this but triton and all the other mid size that claim it, ranger included, it leaves you room for a person and a coffee cup in the car.

The PIAK bar for the sports looks good. The one they make for the Triton is ugly . I'm in the process of getting an Ironman side protection bar and putting some checker plate on the top of it.... Just got rear ended yesterday tho so I'm a bit late to get it fitted...lol

Good job thanks! The first time that I towed (1.7t camper trailer) the bar dropped to the extent of the slotted holes. Dealer re-aligned it and fitted a 5th (fitted) bolt each side. It's been OK since. Did your instructions mention this 5th bolt?

Hey mate. Nah they didn't but you can drill a 5th even 6th small hole that is a tight fit for some high tensile bolts to keep it in line once you have it lined up how you like. The front bar adopts this idea so if you remove it you can refit it in the same spot each time and not have to realign it :)

David, are you able to recall what dealer fitted the 5th bolt? My paik bar also keeps dropping. Do you have a picture of where they placed the bolt?

@@OBUSA1 Ultimate Offroad in Ferntree Gully, Victoria. The 5th bolt has to be a ‘fitted’ bolt, i.e. the shank is the same size as the filled hole, to prevent movement.

Unfortunately my bar suffered an almost catastrophic failure when the brackets attached to the chassis rails fractured on one side and distorted on the other side. Since replaced with a replacement, same type.

Mat..Hi Just been onto Piak today(got a PS 2020 gls) and they do a bar now rated to 3100Kgs-----Does the tongue used on the piak bar use the small solid cast that comes with Mitsubishi standed tow bar or can you use different size tongues? Cheers

Soz I have a DO35 and the standed Mits tow tongue is to small and doesnt let the coupling completely turn.

G’day bro. Just bought a 2018 exceed with 35k on the clock,only had it a week so just getting used to things everything seems ok thus far. We had a 03 prado for 10 years and didn’t miss a beat but she got written off in a recent flood we just had. What are your thoughts mate on yours? Ya had any problems to speak of. Was gunna get another prado as we didn’t spend a cent on it in 10 years and done 450 thousand ks. But they were to fucken expensive. Just subscribed to,just watch all ya vids now. Cheers.

Hey mate. Sorry for the late reply, loving it so far, its not a super high quality built car but the bang for buck Is amazing, the diff lock is great off road and theyre a very capable car out of the box thats comfy and cheap enough to maintain. I got mine with 90k on the clock but for yours id recommend getting a catch can asap as the sooner the better :)

Thanks for ya reply mate. I’m new to the good old diesel to,prado was 4ltr v6. What exactly does catch can do exactly. Sort of rushed into things being time not on my side,thus haven’t done much research. Cheers

@@matsamuels9197 the catch can catches the oil vapour from the blow by. It stops the intake blocking up with carbon over time

What if just leave the exhaust like that, does it sounds better or it is bad for the performance

If the exhaust is left as is it could damage the exhaust, and in extreme cases the turbo. As the constant stress will fatigue certain parts. Not really power loss more physical damage. It's easy enough to bend and move :)

Bending the mount will make no difference to sound wither

However if left in place it can rattle and make noise when running

Yeah mate. Literally been waiting for parts for months now and its driving me nuts. Haha. Stay tuned as there is heaps more Barra and project car goodness
