There are many occasions where we might not have access to a piano when we need to practice. In this video, Charles gives you 2 important things to do when you don't have the piano, and one thing to STOP doing that's usually, mistakenly, highly recommended instead!

Away from the piano, I practice by closing my eyes and I trying to recreate by heart all the piece musically, feeling every finger move ever so slightly.

You can actually do finger independance exercises, like trying to move only one finger without moving anything else, or move your fingers like if you did double thirds exercises, and trying to hit the surface withboth fingers at exactly the same time. Also you can sightread oieces in your mind, or even just play the ones you know while trying to make them the best musically. Sorry for the my english in lazy to correct everything

Super great suggestions! The hands never play anything the mind doesn't tell them to play, so however you get it into the mind -- listening, hearing, reading -- can only help !

What about mental practice? Should you stop doing it all together, or should you just not move your fingers?
@PianistAcademy1

Absolutely keep doing metal practice, especially the mental practice of full visualization. Science has been proving in a variety of fields from athletics to music performance that we can enhance our productivity if we remove the physical movements from our mental practice. In the case of this video, not only do we want to avoid "table top" playing because of how dissimilar it is to the piano, but avoiding motion all together can enhance our ability to learn even more as long as we keep the mind engaged.

Oh these are wonderful suggestions! I have an upcoming trip and wondered what I was going do in place of practice. I do have an app I'm using to help me with sight reading and recognizing notes and key signatures on the staff for the various clefs so that's something to do as well. Great timing, Charles! Thank you.

I absolutely agree with your admonition against practicing on a table top away from the keyboard. I think it's a romanticized notion that was popularized in old movies like "The Competition," but has no benefit to real pianists.

Thanks Charles, excellent as always. I think I saw recently you did a perfect practice video? If so, may I comment here. I have found it really used to play super slow but completely accurately. It has really helped me play some (for me) very difficult pieces. Also re this video, I personally find being separated from my instrument very difficult. I am autistic and I need the physical interaction to calm me. Just a thought, thanks

Thanks for the thoughts! I’d be very interested to hear more about your practicing techniques. Most good teachers I know who specialize in teaching people on the spectrum really stress NOT changing the tempo during practice and instead, learning close to or at performance tempo as much as possible. Have you tried that? And if you have, what were your results?

Did you deliberately film with a phone or go for a vlog look? Complete with teleprompter? :p Hope the service is going well!

All my gear was torn down, so the phone was the only choice. And… how did you know I used a teleprompter on this?? I had most people tricked!

@@WSJade Haha gotcha! No effect. I have my phone mounted to a little handheld gimbal. When the camera's moving, I'm holding it. But also, it has a little tripod base, so I could take it to the piano room, set it down (on a step stool you can't see lol) and then just talk into it without holding!

@@PianistAcademy1 Ahh nice! I didn't know you had a gimbal. All I knew was it didn't seem like you were holding the phone directly so I was trying to connect the dots, haha. Any gimbal(s) you would recommend?

@@WSJade I use this one by Zhiyun: amzn.to/42gVpgG They have a new model out now as well. I also have a heavy duty pro gimbal for my mirrorless cinema cams, but those are impossible to use myself. I need one or TWO camera ops for that LOL

Is practicing on an electronic keyboard good or bad?? it has sound, but a different feel than acoustic piano...,,looks like you are doing hardwood flooring?? hope it all comes out to your liking...
@PianistAcademy1
@PianistAcademy1 Жыл бұрын
That really depends on the keyboard! I love my Kawai digital stage piano and sometimes find that it actually feels closer to a concert grand than my 6'6" Kawai acoustic does. A digital that can substitute needs more than just "weighted keys" to make it a good substitute. It needs a long pivot length. It's that long key pivot that makes the digital action feel most similar to an acoustic. The shorter the pivot, and the more the counterweight is regulated with springs, the less accurate and less good of a substitute it is. A semi-weighted keyboard is simply to be avoided at all costs. Unless the pianist has an extreme awareness of their technique, it can teach really bad habits to the hand and fingers. Ironically, that's exactly the type of keyboard most beginners start with... and it's the absolute worst choice. Those students ALL have to unlearn many bad habits after just 1 or 2 years if they want to continue to make progress. Great question, Danny! The flooring is all done now and it looks and feels (and even sounds) great!
