Baxter and Jonathan each choose one guitar from a small builder to keep forever in hopes it will go up in value. What would you choose?

The longer you keep/ play the guitar you already own the more money you, “make”. Buy a 1000$ guitar and play it for 20 years. 50$ per year of use, less than 5$ per month. Pennies to play… why doesn’t everyone have a guitar? They’re practically free! 🎸

I think that guitars now are the baseball cards and comics of the 80s and 90s. In 20 to 30 years everyone is going to have a boutique or vintage guitar and will try to cash in and will find out that the bottom of the market fell out and the current valuations was just a bubble. That’s when I’ll be happy to buy your guitars!

I think Suhr is probably the best bang for your buck.....compared to a fender custom shop master built. Suhr you get a plek job, stainless steel frets, nitro finish, light relic, locking tuners, gotoh locking bridge for around $2,800. And, their prices have bene going up pretty regularly.

I notice I don't see many Tom Anderson Custom builds on your side of the country, but I think they are the most interesting guitars I've ever played or owned. His Custom builds really are custom in that if you want something you get it unless the rare case comes along where he believes your choice will wreck the guitar (like say if I built it).

I’ll be honest, I know PRS doesn’t intend to make them as investment guitars, but the Dragon series, the guitars they built for Mayer to use with Dead & Co. and hell, the special color Silver Sky’s. I really think if you have the money and connections, those guitars would have been a great investment. Then again, other than the Dragon series, I’d play the hell out of them.

I'm not a collector of guitars .I'm a user . Ended up making my own to get what I feel I needed out of a guitar , still building and keep flipping from one guitar to the next .I can't ever see myself buying another name guitar . I like the reference to Tinker Tailor , soldier spy. I watched the original version on UK TV in 1979 . It had Alex Guinness as the lead actor and was the most absorbing TV I had ever seen . its very dated now but worth a look to compere the updated version . Take care out there .

It depends what you are buying for. As something you would sell later at a profit, look for boutique builders who have their guitars played by influential guitar players (not talented or “great” players… but players whose work will have currency in ten years). Similarity to vintage iconic guitars is a more volatile future prospect, especially reliced or custom shop copies. That’s a current trend for the 70s-90s generation that now has expendable income and never had the guitars of the generation before them. Buying for your own playability is an entirely different thing. You shouldn’t want to sell it.

In the classical guitar world it’s basically the same deal. 1. If you buy an up and coming maker you risk them getting out of the game and having the value drop. It’s really easy to get a 6k classical guitar and then have to take a 2k bath on it. Obviously there is upside because if they become a major builder and they get the right artists you can double your money in 10 years. 2. If it’s an older established maker you’re paying a premium for that. Just make sure it’s a GREAT guitar so you’re not trying to find a sucker that’s willing to pay for the name in the sound hole despite the guitar being a dog.

I wouldn't/don't buy guitars or pedals ie amps etc. as collector investments, so I don't buy them hoping to make money at some later point. I buy them to play and enjoy.

Have either one of you played a Tom Rodriguez electric? I bought one from Tom who I've known since 1980 for a good discount, and it's based on a 68-69 Strat, but with specs I still can't believe. After you get back from NAMM, This 10 Year old near mint guitar is coming down so Baxter can fall in love,( No drooling.). I'll give you one spec: a 20,000 year old fossilized Mastodon nut, and the rest of the specs are exactly as I requested. He recently got a well known Dealer, so I no longer get my poor friends discount, but It is such a fine guitar that while sick it was put away for 18 months, only to come out of the case still 100% in tune,( and Johnathan, no locking tuners!! Just slotted Gotohs!). Can't wait for Baxter to play it and it's Fralin vintage hots, vintage wound the way I wanted them with #42 formver, stock vintage neck and middle, and a mildly hot 6.8 bridge. You're gonna love it! Peace & Love, Keith in RVA

Danocaster's built in Nashville. My personal choice is Grez from Petaluma, CA. His philosophy is that wood quality has gone downhill over the years due to over harvesting. He prefers salvage wood, especially redwood. I'd been hoping for a semi hollow, but wound up getting one of their one-piece solid bodies. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJuaasZ0r5iveY0.html

All of my 20+ scratch built guitars are boutique and unique. I also own many modern and vintage guitars. As you can probably tell. I'm afflicted with GAS. I'm only building a Nashville B bender tele and an upgraded strat body right now. And I'm only gassing for a reasonably priced danelectro at the moment. But things can change overnight. Beware it starts harmlessly with changing out your pickups then assembling a partscaster. Good luck. Save yourself, it's too late for me. lol. btw, it's not a poor man's hobby.

Guys this is a bit silly. Are the listings full of 1988 Tom Anderson’s going for considerably more? The only way any boutique or custom shop guitars will rise will be if the builder dies or quits. See Sid Poole, Peter Max Baranet, Gail Yaron. John English Fenders etc etc. I had a guitar commissioned by a U.K. builder in 2019. He told me yesterday that he will stop building after his 30th Anniversary. But I wouldn’t bet it as an investment.

I want a Duesenberg. And while you can buy an investment, if a guitar does not make you want to pick it up it is not worth owning. The investment is because you may be buying something you really can't afford, but as long as it has resale value and is something in demand, you can off-load it when they time comes. Unfortunately I think there are too many Duesenbergs for sale to be considered in demand, and I can't find a store that carries them so I don't know how they feel. So it looks like Gibson or Gretsch will get my next purchase because they do sell. All of them, all the time...

Total agree with you guys, it’s just obscene to me that people buy guitars for investment and not for playing, but I guess that’s the difference in this weird old world. I’d rather write a perfect song than be given £1,000,000 … and I genuinely mean that, my bank account proves it :)

9:30 I had a supervisor like Baxter.... a typical convo (with Norm MacDonald reference): Him: Did you see movie X? Me: No. Him: Do you remember the scene with Meryl Streep and the horse? Me: I didn't see the movie. Him: Oh, you didn't see the movie? Well you should see it. Anyway, so Meryl goes to buy a horse...
