I think that he has some good points about tokenism, but it’s difficult to point out when most resumes are fluffed up to pander to identity politics or they might be canceled.

Barton ‘women shouldn’t talk about the men’s game’ Barton also ‘it’s like me talking about knitting or netball’ - why not snooker or crown green bowling, strange analogy if you are not basing it on gender. He would have had more credibility if he had said it’s like getting someone from the conference league to talk about the prem, they are the same game played at different speeds levels, although I suspect Barton would find that more palatable. Barton - ‘I’ve got a daughter I would want her, if she would like to, to commentate or co commentate on the men’s game’ Morgan ‘so someone like Alex Scott (played at the highest level in euro & World Cup finals & has a degree in broadcasting) is she not qualified?’ Barton - ‘to talk about the men’s game? She hasn’t played it (which presumably his daughter never will btw) I’ve played and been involved in 657 men’s games’ So Mr Barton how will she or your daughter ever hope to be qualified to comment on the men’s game? In conclusion it would appear that Barton would like to portray his issue is ‘tokenism’ and I’m not in disagreement with that argument however his lack of consistency means to me a veil drops behind his real issue. In another interview, Barton recently said about his brother that ‘he lost 17 years of his life for having a scrap when someone died’, when In fact he didn’t lose 17 years of his life, he was incarcerated for them, for his part in the murder in an unprovoked attack on a young black male (Anthony Walker)- who ACTUALLY lost all of his life so it’s fair to say he doesn’t necessarily see the world through the same spectacles the majority of us do

100% agree with Joey here - there are plenty of tick box presenters in Sports media these days (male and female) and having an opinion on whether that person is suitable for the job is not about their gender. Even my wife refuses to watch the football or rugby when certain female commentators are involved - it ruins it for her too, so it's not just a male 'complaint'.

Yes, the women on the panel sabotaged each other to a degree at the end there by shouting over one another. But what they *_didn't_* do was actually *_lose_* the argument, which was that football is the same game with the same rules (just like hockey, tennis or basketball), Barton's line of reasoning being *_"have you ever been tackled at full speed?"_* He lost the argument _right there_ all by himself. Of _course_ the majority in the comments section appear to be in support of him, which proves nothing other than most sane people have got better things to do with their time. I watched a Joey Barton interview on another yt channel earlier (which brought me here) where you see Barton try to extrapolate beyond that *_central_* point made here, stringing together every prejudice he can, not one of them related _to_ it, including female commentators on other sports, trans-women in female power sports¹, anti-vax nonsense, _'anti-wokeness,'_ ...the whole Mat Le Tissier-style playbook. The recent Liverpool v Sheffield Utd game was ruined by the two female commentators. I felt like I was being nagged by two banshees for 90 minutes. Yer, I know we have to put up with looking at Lineker and thinking he's massively overpaid and over-opinionated but at least when we see punditry of this quality we can see exactly what Joey Barton means. I'm against female commentary in football matches. Not because of gender, but because they're not witty or articulate like the season male commentary and they have high pitched voices which becomes grating. Funny thing is, I've watched tennis religiously from 2006 - 2021 roughly and half the commentary is done by women (even in the mens game), but they're all 45yrs+ old and have gravitas in their voice. Listen to Annabel Croft (Tennis) speak vice women in football. Different universe.

He's right. Some people enjoy women's soccer because it is a different game to mens soccer. Indeed they advertise it as a different sort of play in some markets.
