"It's Rewarding Failure!" Piers Morgan vs Bianca Westwood On Mary Earps SPOTY Win

Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by former Sky Sports News broadcaster Bianca Westwood, TalkTV contributor Esther Krakue and associate editor of the Mirror Kevin Maguire to discuss and debate the Sports Personality Of The Year Award being presented to England Lionesses' goalkeeper Mary Earps and whether she deserves she accolade after failing to win any major trophies for club or country this season, compared to the other nominees who had won major honours in their respective sports.
Piers believes that the other nominees, such as Rory McIlroy, who led his team to the Ryder Cup victory this year, should have been voted ahead of Mary because she failed to win anything major. Bianca then points to all the individual accolades Mary won this year including the Golden Gloves in the WSL and World Cup and explains that she has dominated in her field on the pitch as well as her contributions off it.

My big issue with this is that the woman who finished third actually won her second world championship on the back of recovering from a career ending injury. So it's not that there aren't women worthy of the title, more that it should change it's name to personality of the year as the chances are that the bulk of the public votes were cast based on whose name they know because of the mainstream and social media rather than their sporting accomplishments.

I’m shocked that Lucy Charles Barclay wasn’t even on the shortlist. She was a deserved winner of the award as she won the world Ironman triathlon championship which she lead from start to finish over 8 hours of swimming cycling and running. BBC should be ashamed for not even considering her when they have a goalkeeper who didn’t win anything.

I remember when Jenson Button won the F1 drivers championship as a British driver for a British team in the teams debut year in which the British team won the constructors championship. A feat which will likely never be achieved by anyone anywhere ever again. Ryan Gigs won that year for doing nothing special. This was after the boikots during the 90's and 2000's. I'm with Bianca, Mary Earps is a very worthy winner. The validity of the SPOTY rules and selection is a separate question. The Lionesses were a phenomenal team every game except the last game but Mary Earps still put in a fabulous shift against Spain. To me, SPOTY is about inspiring the next generation, not justifying the current one, Mary Earps did that. Congratulations

The English men lost, but the manager was at fault for that. Giving young inexperienced young guy's all that pressure when there were lots of older experienced players avaiable. !!!! The women are basically playing a game that is even less than a boys school standard team. So any mistake and each goal keeper will have no chance of making a save, hence why they have so many goals. !!!!! I don't know if she should have won over the others, but it's unfair to say she hasn't won anything. Being a World Cup finalist is an achievement in itself; in the Olympics, they call them silver medal winners. Would Piers have objected if Johan Cryuff had been given the equivalent award in the Netherlands in 1974 because he lost in the final?

Mate they're different sports, getting to a final in the ladies game is NOT the same as achieving anything in the men's game.

@@mrchico2621 First of all, they are different categories of the same sport. But it doesn't matter, and I don't think you got my point, my friend. Being the runner-up in ANY sport on the world stage is a great achievemet, and she had a lot to do with it. They are also the current European champions. If the men's team had reached the final and had lost to Argentina, I'm sure all the English fans would have been heartbroken, but I think they still would have considered it a successful campaign. Personally, I think her winning the award was politically motivated, and probably someone else should have won it. However, my objection is when Piers undervalues her achievements and all but calls her a loser. I think she's a great athlete, but there were more deserving candidates.

@@piruz3243 Funny you said that when you didn't understand my point at all. Obviously all sports are operating at different levels of skill and intensity. When you take away all the bluster and nonsense surrounding women's football, it's really just a low level minority sport played by very few people. So no, it's not really true that being a runner-up in ANY sport on the world stage is always some kind of special achievement.

Where was Jordan Pickford's nomination when England lost the euros in the final. He was class in the euros even saving that vital free kick in the semis against damsgaaard. He was played better then Mary earps in that comp. But he didn't get nominated at all

Never heard of Mary Earps. That said, I don't follow women's football and I haven't watched SPOTY in the last 20 years or so. I know equality and diversity are at the forefront of everything the BBC stands for now, possibly to extreme levels.

I’ll be honest, I thought her winning was ridiculous until the point made about Gazza and Owen. That put it into perspective. I’ve changed my mind. I believe she deserves it on that comparison. However Ronnie O’Sullivan could easily have won it for personality alone, never mind his success

If you aim to provoke someone, confront them about their questionable behavior. In Pierce's case, he demonstrates his bias by strongly criticizing one side while leaving room for doubt on the other. The actions of Hamas he condemns and the actions of Israel are considered questionable.
