Pig's tusks are used in jewellery making and require some preparation before use.
The enamel needs to be removed.
Sometimes the tusk needs to be filled to strenghten fragile tusks.
I use micro balloons, and resin.
Available at fibreglassing suppliers.
Once filled and the resin sets the tusk can be further worked on.
The tusks are then polished and caps made in silver or gold.
Some are made into pendants or hatpins for Polynesian women to decorate their hand woven hats.

Love the video thank you very much. I am Wondering about a tusk that I have that has a crack down the seam. Do you have any ideas about something I could do for that Before I copy your video?

Hi Have a look at the beginning of this video. I use binding wire to hold the split together. Another way is to use duct tape. Then fill with resin and microballoons. Hope this helps. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hpuioayd0LPTqaM.html

Hey there I don’t want to bother you at all but I do like what you’re doing. I have not been able to do anything with the boar tusk yet but I’m Online right now buying the correct supplies that I need. I am curious about how to go about this. Do you use that one measuring cup to put in the Microbaloons, the catalyst, and the casting resin? Do you just do equal proportions to fill up the small measuring cup and then fill up the tusk? I’ve never done this before but the tusks that I found Are definitely very important to me. Also I have one tusk That’s Split completely in half. If I put it together with my fingers it goes together pretty well actually pretty perfectly. I don’t really want to throw it away but what would you recommend as far as putting it back together if that’s a possibility?

Hi. All good. First you mix up the resin and catalyst. Then add the micro balloons. I don't measure the micro balloons. It's more of a consistency thing. You have to be able to pour it. So not so thick that it won't pour. All the best with your experiments. 👍 If you want to see more of my work on Instagram william_the_jeweller on insta.

Is there any reason not to fill the tusk *before* removing the enamel? Seems like it would be a bit more robust and less likely to crack during the grinding.....

No reason. If you want to fill before or after. Either works.

how do you drill into the tuskI have to tusks which I want use as door handles there 8inches long
@utooth8114

Hi I use normal twist drills. Start with a small drill and slowly increase the sizes. If there isn't one close to what you need use a ball burr or similar. Just make sure you wear a mask. The dust isn't good for you. I also have a fan blowing across the work area to take the dust away. Needless to say this is done outside. All the best with your door handles. 👍

Push it down with a skewer or similar. Most of the air will bubble out.

Can you please advise why enamel should be removed?

Hi Sandy. You don't have to remove the enamel. But it smooths out the tusk is an appealing colour. I've seen tusks that have been left. Usually the enamel is stained. The choice is yours. Have a great day.

Kia ora …. I was wanting to put my mums ashes into the tusks for pendants . Can I mix the ashes in with this mixture?
@utooth8114
@utooth8114 2 жыл бұрын
Kia orana Yes my friend that is possible. I've made an ashes ring in the past. You mix the resin and ashes and pour in the tusk. Try to make the mix less than you need. That way the ashes not used are kept safe. All the best with your jewellery making.

Also leave the micro balloons out. The ashes replace the micro balloons.

🥲🥲🥲🥲You have made my day ! My mum passed in lock down 4wks ago and I asked my friend for a whole lot of boar skulls so I could make 8 pendants for my siblings and a few grand children. This is gold and I can’t thank you enough for your help . Can I use a syringe to feed the resin into the tusks and what do u recommend to join the tusks together before I bind them ?

@@jngazy526 I would experiment with one pair of tusks before using your mum's ashes. You said "before binding them". Are the tusks to be bound with a fibre to cover the ends where they join each other? I haven't done this before. Perhaps when you have filled the tusks up to the ends and the resin has set. Drill a larger than needed hole in each end. Fit a piece of metal and fill the remainder of the too large with more resin. That should set rock hard. You will need to prop it up some how and tape it up to keep the resin in place. Let me know how you get on with the test piece. 👍
