Look. at. these. BURGERS.
I tried a Pillsbury Bake Off recipe for Funny Face Hamburgers. The results were frightening. Just watch the video.
FUNNY FACE HAMBURGERS
(from Pillsbury's Bake Off Main Dish Cook Book, 1968)
1lb lean ground beef
1/4 all purpose or self rising flour
2Tbsp dried parsley
2Tbsp ketchup
1tsp salt
1/2tsp onion salt
1/4tsp pepper
1 can refrigerated Parkerhouse dinner rolls*
6 pimento strips
12 raisins
2Tbsp potato flakes
2tsp cooking oil
milk
Preheat oven to 375. Combine ground beef, flour, parsley flakes, ketchup, salt, onion salt and pepper. Shape into 6 patties. Open can and separate dough into 12 rolls. On a sheet pan press 6 rolls into 4" circles. Place meat patty on top of each circle. Press remaining 6 rolls into 4" circles. Stretch each circle over meat patty and pinch well to seal top and bottom dough circles. For faces, snip through crust with scissors or sharp knife for eyes and mouth. Place raisins in holes for eyes; pimento strip for mouth. For hair combine potato flakes and oil. Brush each roll with milk and sprinkle with potato flakes (or use shredded cheese or cornflakes for hair). Bake at 375 for 25 to 30 mins. Makes 6 burgers.
*I substituted Pillsbury Refrigerated French Loaf for the rolls. You will need 2 French loaves to make the full recipe.

I just remembered as a kid thinking those ham and cheese pinwheels (as seen in my mom's Pillsbury Family Cookbook) looked delicious but it was something we couldn't eat in my family because my dad hated cheese. Now I'm going to have to make them. Yay!

If you don’t like mixing meat like this with your hands, you can use the dough hooks on your hand mixer, it does a great job of blending all your ingredients without damaging the texture of the final product when it’s cooked.

Well, that’s a recipe I’ve never run into. I think it would be something I would have tried as a kid though. If I was going to make these now I think I would stuff the burgers with cheese and maybe add some Worcestershire sauce to the patty mix. Also egg wash all you decorations on.

I think they'd work better for a halloween party than a birthday. Either way, I'm curious: What (if anything) did the self-raising flour bring to the burger?
@cooking_the_books

Added absolutely nothing. I missed it in the original recipe, but it said you could add either self rising or all purpose. These would definitely be a hit at a halloween party!

Nightmare fuel burgers!!! Wow, the book is so pretty, and so nice to find the classic blue cornflower! I'm not sure if I'm down with raisins on my burgers either, but heck, there are so many fun decorating options here, go to town I say. Sad they also didn't turn out to be flavoured as much... ah well, that was still a very fun adventure! Good job on that hair dec! Thanks for this Anna!

The photos in this one are so full of color. I believe the raisin eyes are what make these burgers so dang creepy! So vacant and soulless. Googly olive eyes seemed to make at least one of them more jolly.

This is perfect for a Halloween party!! They meet the criteria for sure! Lol. We usually have a party for the kids which is either a little fire outside for hot dogs or mini pizzas inside that they can decorate & eat after trick or treating (before the onslaught of sugar!). These could be gold for them! 🤣
