Pilot, plane make emergency landing on Hwy. 407 in Markham

It's not something you see every day. A small plane made an emergency landing on Highway 407 just a few minutes after taking off from the Buttonville Airport in Markham. Mark Douglas has the story.

At the end the reporter did mention that the policeman is a pilot himself. Lucky that he was there to give a good explanation for the reporter.

gas filter wasn't changed out, something might have fill the filter up during the tank swap.

Honestly great that the flyers and the plane didn't receive any damage (minus the duck tape fuel lid) and no one in their cars got hurt when this landed.

Exactly. The tires were good so they should have been able to tow it to the next exit instead of taking hours to remove it.

In all seriousness this could've been WAY MORE CHALLENGING! If they landed on the 401 it would be a nightmare! The 407 is also a Toll Highway so it's a lot easier for emergency vehicles to pass, and less backup for lane closures

My old club of an '86 Chevy pickup with two fuel tanks would do this occasionally. Figured aircraft technology would be a little better than that!

Agreed I don’t think landing on a highway should be taken lightly. Nothing wrong with checking into the circumstances.

@@Jaybird563 @Jayson Especially a toll highway like this one. People pay big bucks to use this highway to avoid incidents like this. The 407 should be sued.

Sounds like the pilot switched to an empty fuel tank. textbook landings are at airports, not freeways(costways I should say)

windmilling. or perhaps it was running at idle and sputtering not providing enough power and pull

Even when the engine quits the prop will spin due to windmilling, or as the person said, perhaps it was at idle. But either way, without enough power to maintain flight. If you pitch for best glide, you will have enough speed that the prop will move as you glide.
