Jurgen Raps is a freaking stud. 40 years of experience taught him how to plant that A380 on that runway with a 15 knot tailwind. There really is no substitute for an experienced pilot who can anticipate air traffic control before they even speak. Not to mention the fact that he maintains a sterile cockpit from start to finish. Good man. We'll miss you in your retirement, Jurgen.

I absolutely love the flow of the protocol on approach to SFO. The sights from high up looking down were gorgeous. Landing a "flying hotel" takes plenty of skill on a clear day and far more skill and experience during inclement weather. These German pilots did a great job of landing that big boy plane. Thank You for showing us all what the passengers never get to see firsthand. Loved all the electronic navigational instruments. The mechanical movements of the plane thrill me. This was my dream since I was a little kid. To fly a commercial airliner. The aviation industry lost a potential commercial pilot going back to the 1990's. The loss was greater for me than for them.

I really would've loved to have been a commercial pilot for AA, TWA or Delta. That would've been a childhood dream come true for me. On Sept. 1st 2020, after a 33 year and 4 month career with Continental/United, I was forced to retire by the FAA just because I turned 65. My last flight as a 777 Captain was from Seoul to SFO on Aug. 29th, landing also on 28R. Im lucky, I was able to do what I dreamed of doing since I was 3 years old, but it sure takes the joy out of retirement.

Random Account that's the smoothest landing I've ever seen, I've been on many Boeing's not to many airbus's and there's ALWAYS a rough bump the second you land, then a less rough but still rough bump when the nose goes down then you feel that force on you when your slowing down, when you take off you feel as if youre being pushed forward extremely hard and when you just landed and youre slowing down you feel youre being pushed back

My first landing at SF scared me to death. On final approach there was another aircraft to the right, as if we were competing for the same runway. As things turned out we were using the left runway and the other aircraft the right. Both aircraft landed simultainiously on adjacent runways. Never experienced that before - or after. Crazy, but that was 22 years ago.

It is great weather today, but it can be treacherous when there is fog. They had an open air balcony showing the tarmac in past years. It was a great place to watch 707s, and DC-8s and the newest airliner the 727s. There were propeller driven aircraft like the Electra. Flying into SFO made you feel like you were landing in the bay, but just as you were about to touch the water a landing strip would appear. They used to have a flight from Oakland to SFO to position aircraft. Lasted 15 minutes, cost 12 dollars. Money well spent.

It's been several years since I've seen this video. I live in SF, and just love watching it. I'm sorry to tell the Captain, and Crew that the Cliff House has closed, due to Covid, lock-down, and a breakdown in negotiations with the Department of the Interior (It's located on federal land, in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area). However, there are hopes that it can be revived, later in 2022.

In aviation, pilots are ALWAYS "flying the aircraft" whether it is on autopilot or not. They must check their instruments every few seconds as well as look outside whenever they are approaching an airport or taking off. Both those times (TO&Ls) are the most dangerous times of flying. You must get on the ILS, the scope, well, I won't go into detail, except to say that you are ALWAYS busy when flying an aircraft (or should be!). As a GA pilot myself, I can certainly verify that the most dangerous place to be in flying is around the airport! But it needn't be, if everyone follow the rules and pays attention to EVERYTHING! Sometimes mistakes are made, the ATC may make a mistake, or you may, or another aircraft may, but in general, a mistake will be corrected if everyone is on the ball and paying attention to what is going on around them, ALL THE TIME!

FABULOUS !!! Great panoramic views ! Really felt like being right there in the cockpit !!! Enlightens us, albeit with just a glimpse, on how crucial the ATC-Pilot communication and action both are !!! Salute to the pilots and to all the people behind the curtain ---in the Control Tower--- as well !!! Great teamwork--- the skilled pilots make it sound so simple, but it is actually deceptively simple !!!

Watching this video is a good example of why there will NOT be flying cars for everyone. Everyone involved in moving planes requires respect and following orders or people die

The thought of hundreds of thousands of pounds of steel, aluminium, plastic and fuel flying 7 to 8 miles high at a speed of 600 mph with hundreds of lives on board never ceases to amaze me. Seriously, think about that. My great granny was born in 1879. As a kid, she traveled west at about 20 miles a day on a good day. It took the family an entire summer and nearly everything they owned to travel across the country. When she passed in 1978, humans could buy a ticket for a few hundred dollars, just a few days worth of work, and travel 600 miles in one hour. Sit back, eat a questionable meal, eat a bag of peanuts and have a Diet Coke while you are hurling through the sky at a rate of 6 miles a minute.

OK, it explains his desire to go visual approach instead of ILS. He probably wanted it toooo much, visibly freaking out when the First Officer called out the ILS approach (which is the way they're used to execute it). Putting so much pressure on the crew is *inappropriate!* The result didn't take long to appear: just few more minutes into the approach and you notice the FO's delayed/mumbled readbacks of the ATC instructions, which is a clear indication of overstress. Shame, Captain Rapps! You should have mind those 600 people behind your back more than your pleasure to fly the bird one last time...

I have flown almost all over the world. My first time landing at this airport, I’ll never forget looking out the window and being FREAKED OUT how close we were to the water. I thought to myself “surely the captain would say something if we were landing in the water”… it’s a scene man…landing here. BEAUTIFUL view of the bay from the sky though.

If anyone wants to know what Wake Turbulance means in full terms, here it is: Wake turbulance is caused by an aircraft wingtips from the aircraft in front of you. The bigger the aircraft, the bigger the vortices, and more turbulance. Pilots and ATC leave plenty of space from 2 aircraft. If an Airbus A380 took off, and you are in an a320, you would have to wait for up to 2-5 minutes for the vortices to clear. Thats all I have, comment below if I missed anything!!

Excellent video! Takes special men and women to handle that type of pressure! I flew for a few years for my company, and while the pilots were working like that, I was in the rear of the plane talking with Stewardesses and drinking coffee they would make for me during late night flights! LOL! What a time...
