HOLY CRAP!!! Nice Catch!!! I obviously meant the Pimax Software!!! I can't tell you how many times I rewatched this before posting and that slipped right by. Not to mention the number of takes where I probably said it right and I put this one in the edit. Holy cow... Well it already has almost 500 views so I guess I'll just pin this and say I'm sorry for the mistake. I guess this just proves I'm not A.I. Right? Thanks for pointing this out!!!

Nice honest review , that's why I love your channel :) - I almost sent back my Crystal because of the comfort , Primax sent me the 15mm face flock and boy oh boy has it helped . I also took off the foam from the battery pack and replaced it with the original front face flock. I cut the forehead part off from the check sections. Now the battery compartment cradles the back of my head and is so much more comfy . I'm glad I kept the Crystal now :)

Now that's a funny looking Aero 😅 Really great first impressions Mark, it's funny because the battery issue never occurred to me, it must be from playing the guitar everyday! @@GYGOtv Fantastic video, as always! But boy was that much different than I was expecting. We have all known that the visuals on the Crystal were top notch and the best around, even when being subjective you can't deny that, but to hear you have so many issues/negative aspects about the initial use is truly way more than I expected. Even though they had addressed some of the issues and negative aspects like the top clip breaking during shipping, and extending the battery life with that power hub, it seems like it's still way more troublesome than any previous VR HMD launch which is saying something sense there have been loads of troubled VR HMD launches. I think what I am most surprised with is how difficult of a time the batteries gave you and how uncomfortable the VR headset was in general for you, even though they have the weight distributed in a balanced way. Not to mention you still couldn't find a comfortable spot with the always fantastic studioform creative comfort kit strap. That strap has made such a difference in so many VR headsets that I was expecting you to at least find it comfortable enough to play for several hours straight. Since you are a sim user first and foremost, that makes me even more worried for users like myself who play all sorts of genres and types of VR experiences. If you can't sit comfortably then it sure as heck isn't going to go well up and moving all around. I am super curious to see how you get the headset comfortable and fine tuned for 4-8 hour VR session. There is no doubt in my mind that you will have that HMD comfortable and able to use for those 6 hour sessions. I'm curious if when you get the lighthouse interface attachment that it will maybe add weight to somehow make it more comfortable? I have no idea, just curious if that will mess with all that you do right now to make it comfortable. Once you get it so it's wearable for a full VR session, I am very excited to hear your thoughts. Wondering about all the ins and outs that you get from using the HMD for a couple hundreds of hours. I know we discussed it on your live stream, but having the lighthouse tracking will be another step in the right direction for personal wants/needs. So we may be waiting even longer than you getting your lenses delivered and the HMD more comfortable before we really know how the headset goes for you. Thanks again for making the video! I love my Aero, but like you, I'm always wanting to experience that next level of VR immersion. And with the Crystal offering those visually, it's hard for me to not buy the headset even with all of those issues. By the way, didn't you get a 4090 recently? I didn't see it in your description so I'm curious if you used the 4090 or another GPU. Cheers!

Hi ervmoore, yes I think that is the official way, and thanks for the tip. I still think it is a workaround for a bad design. You should be able to swap the battery with it still on your head in my opinion. The design is the cheap way out, I hate bad design even if there is a work around to get it to function. Those retainers should be independent, spring loaded buttons that you squeeze together to release, not pivot like it is now. Appreciate the comment and the view.

Opinions about a VR headset are very very subjective by essence according people . Thanks for the unboxing but only a real laboratory test and measurement, as it exists or will exist.. would provide data to compare with other VR headsets. Having discussed with friend that bought it and is already selling it, it is better waiting a fully finalized version of hardware and software, including a real support for motion compensation both in steam and openXR.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment jayphi4095, I think the hardware is pretty much finalized with this unit... and as I'm sure you are aware, software these days is NEVER finished anymore, as patches always roll out from all sorts of companies. So I understand your theory about "only a real laboratory tests" is basically valid... but may I offer a competing viewpoint? Some would argue that some data, even if not perfect, is better than no data at all for decision making. Since I don't have a lab I wouldn't be able to provide the data you deem worthy. So is the VR Community better off by me keeping silent, or by me at least offering my experience no matter how imperfect my views may be? I'd say there are over 2600 viewers (my subscribers) who would favor my putting out info vs. staying quiet. Just my 2 cents, and thank you for watching.

My brother, since you're a sim racer or flight, you should get the 12K QLED which they will demo in the 4th quarter this year. The 12K gives you the wide FOV which is needed in sim racing. Trust me, those toilet roll FOV will not provide you with the peripheral vision that you needed for sim racing or flight. I have an 8KX with wide FOV and have tested out the small FOV against the wide one extensively and at first I thought I can drive in this small FOV and it seems fine and after awhile when I switch back to the wide FOV, I noticed the sense of speed is much pronounce with the wide FOV and seems more immersive and comfortable for the eyes? And remember, the 8KX small FOV is about 120 degree compare to the Crystal 102...so the Crystal is even smaller. On 8KX, I am driving at normal FOV now which is probably 130 degree. Now, I can go higher but that takes too much resource from the game even though i have RTX4090. So, I recommend you to get the 12K QLED....because that's what I am waiting for. It provides you with the same clarity as the Crystal because it is a bionic lenses w/ the Crystal lenses in the middle and Fresnel lenses on the peripheral.
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
Hi Reptile, O believe me I know about the 12k QLED, I was originally going to skip the Crystal in favor of it... but a few things changed my mind. First, I don't think the 12k QLED will be ready at the end of the year, I just think Pimax has too many other things ahead of that headset so I don't think the 12k will be released until probably the end of 2024 (but I really hope I'm wrong and Pimax surprises me). Also I HATE glare, and I'm worried about those Fresnel lenses on the side, plus I need prescription inserts and based on the ones I've seen made for the 8KX etc. I'm not sure I would like them (seems like they just drop off an edge and you have this big hole on the side. NOW I MIGHT BE WRONG and if the 12k comes out and there are none of these issues, guess what I'll likely pick one up... that is the beauty of this, nobody says I can't have both and I might as well enjoy the Crystal until the 12k comes out, right? Thanks for watching as always... I always enjoy your comments.

@VirtualAirTour
@VirtualAirTour Жыл бұрын
@@redtailpilot I think you're making a wise choice. IMO the Pimax Crystal is not a significant upgrade over the Varjo Aero. Here's why... - The Pimax Crystal is the most uncomfortable headset I have ever worn - by far. Granted I have never tried any of Pimax' previous headsets but it was literally painful after about 30 minutes. - It's very rare that I find myself disappointed with the Aero's field of view (usually only when trying to view the captian's radio panels on the 737). For me the additional vertical FOV provided by the Crystal was blurry with chromatic aberration so I ended up tilting my head up/down for a clearer view anyway. - I'm never disappointed with the Aero's colors - never. They just seem natural/realistic/life-like rather than being over-saturated. - In my experience the Pimax Crystal's "Extreme" setting for local dimming resulted in bright areas being dimmed along with the dark areas which makes it only useful for evening and night time scenes. I can already achieve that by lowering the backlight brightness on the Aero. Don't get me wrong - the Crystal's local dimming does indeed deliver much better black levels. But with my unit and the current software it did sacrifice brightness of light areas at the same time - perhaps this will be improved with future updates. - I think all of the reviewers who are reporting the Crystal's sharpness as being superior to the Aero's need to try the Aero with the red/blue shift beta fix they released in July. My Aero is absolutely sharper than what I was getting with the Pimax Crystal - though admittedly I'm using prescription inserts with the Aero while I was using glasses with the Crystal. - I returned the Varjo Aero 6 (yes six) times before getting one that didn't have either dead pixels or mura issues. While that was incredibly frustrating - Varjo did not complain one bit. They cross-shipped every single one (so I was never without a headset) and I never had to pay a dime for shipping. Now that I'm embarking upon my Pimax Crystal RMA, they're already warning me I have to pay shipping, restocking fee, and the cost of any "unusable items" will be deducted from my refund. I think this speaks volumes about the two companies. - I prefer Varjo Base to the Pimax' software. The killer feature - being able to easily use the Windows desktop with the press of a headset button. I found myself missing that feature immediately when playing MSFS on the Crystal.

The battery clips look like they should just push in..they don't. I almost despaired of getting them out until closer examination revealed that they rotate on a plastic hinge on the lower side of the tabs. Varjo seems to be a decent company with good software, I like the idea of plug and play but do I put up with the pain of Pimax both in set up and comfort for the best visuals?😂😂
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv Жыл бұрын
@@D4anOk, let me see if I can help. First off, coming from the G2... Either the Aero or the Crystal are basically going to give you the same visuals (yes the Crystal is better than the Aero, but not by that much visually). The conclusion I think I've come to is first off, if you don't want to buy lighthouses and controllers, then the Crystal is really the only game in town. IF HOWEVER you are willing to buy those things for the Aero to work then it gets a little more complicated. I've almost decided that for Sim Racing and General Aviation, the Aero is a better choice. It is lighter, better built, better software and has nice features like that cooling fan inside. Now if you want to do Wireless Roomscale or if you do a lot of aerial combat, the Crystal is a better choice. Obviously, the Aero isn't wireless so there is that, BUT also you get about twice the Vertical FOV from the Crystal which really helps in dogfighting situations. Finally, if you are planning on doing productivity work, the Aero still has some issues with clarity on it's desktop visuals. Not sure what the deal is, but text and stuff blurs when you move your head when looking at the desktop in the Aero (you don't ever notice this in games, just when on the desktop inside the hmd). As for me, I'll likely use the Crystal from here on out for both roomscale and sims because I do like dogfighting, but if someone new comes over to try the motion platform, I'll likely put them in the Aero for that because I think it's a better experience and they likely won't notice the limited Vertical FOV. I hope that helps you make a decision... If you do decide to pick either one up, I'd REALLY appreciate you using one of my affiliate links if possible, it really helps the channel. Great review Mark. I'd just received mine this week too. One other negative is the location of the buttons on the headset. I keep accidentally hitting them while putting on or adjusting the headset. It would've been better if they were on the sides and not on top. Their instruction booklet is pretty poor too unless I'm missing something. Do you have to plug in the usb port on the side of the headset while simming? It really doesn't say what that port is for. This is the best visual of any headset I've tried.

Hey pchow, congrats on the headset. I've been extra careful where I grab the headset, but I've even hit those buttons a few times too. Could be placed better... even move them a little more to the middle and that would help a lot. As for hookups, that USB box essentially is like a breakout box. I just have the 2 USB cables from the headset plugged into it and then the USB Box and DP Port to the computer. I think those other ports are for expandability with their other modules that will be coming in the future. Hope that helps and hope yours fits well. Thanks for watching.

Regarding comfort, and glasses. I have very narrow IPD of 59mm and also need to wear reading glasses to get a clear image. I found that with the Pimax Crystal Apache head-strap (which sits closer to the front that the one you are using) it took all the weight off my forehead and nose, so it wasn't an issue any more. Also with Pimax headsets, other users have commented that you don't need to tighten the backstrap adjuster knob too much so it's not mashing into your face; back it off a bit. Also as a temporary measure while waiting for the thicker facial interface you can double up the one you have by taping the spare smaller supplied interface over the other to give more room. Personally, even though I wear glasses with the supplied interface, they don't touch the Crystals lenses and work fine with the backstrap loosened off a bit.

WOW I was not expecting the Crystal to be this uncomfortable. Just got mine yesterday and gave it a go last night. I have the 8KX as well so was expecting this to go over just as easily. But I ended up having this same pressure on my forehead that u mentioned. This morning, I found my VR Cover extra pleather foam pad for my Reverb G2 and was planning on frankensteining it with Velcro to the Crystal sponge layer but it was not easy to get it to stick. Short of using double sided Velcro. On a hunch, I just peeled the large standard foam off (it was stuck with Velcro) and then I put on the foam padded VR Cover directly. It was surprisingly comfortable. Maybe I could do with a slightly thicker version from VR Cover. It turns out the pressure was from that large piece of hard backed foam pressing on the forehead. It needed a bit of finessing to cover the gasket correctly so there was no light leakage. Hope this helps

Wow, I thought I was one of the few with this issue because I hadn't heard much about it from others. Looks like there are lots of us out here it turns out? I'm hoping the 15mm will help a lot (I hear it does). Also I can't imagine VR Cover isn't actively working on a solution as well. With this many people having the issue, it would be a gold mine for VR Cover if they can fix it. I will certainly give my thoughts once I get the 15mm on and use it a little. Thanks for the comment.

Question. If you don't like the Pimax Crystal, do they offer a return for full refund? I've googled it, and even went to their website and used the "live chat bot" but did not find anything clear about that. Great vid! I also use an additional headstrap over the top of my end as well as an extra triangle pad in the back that was meant for the Vive and it helps a lot. It's actually pretty comfortable now. The only issue I have is my 59 IPD...the lenses do touch your nose, so I ended up moving the face gasket lower pad ends closer to the middle which actually pads between my nose and the lenses. Took a few attempts but I have it where it feels much better. So definitely some tweaking needed based on your face structure but it's all worth it in the end IMO...

Another thing is im wondering if i got the plastic lenses instead of Glass and if i should RMA to have lenses replaced. Is there a way of seeing if i have Glass lenses.? I also read some blogs on Reddit about this.ty
@GYGOtv
@GYGOtv 11 ай бұрын
Hi Simmy, sorry to hear you are having problems. As for the distortion like fish eyes, that is probably from not quite having your eyes in the sweet spot of the lenses. If you aren't perfectly in the middle you will see that kind of distortion along with Chromatic Aberration. As for the washed out effect, make sure you don't have some weird setting going on in your Pimax Play Software under Device settings (you can change the relative strength of the RGB channels there). If not, sounds like you might have some issues with the panels and I'd contact Pimax about a replacement. Not sure on the glass lens deal but my understanding is all the new headsets have the glass ones (but even if not you still shouldn't see those issues even with the poly lenses). Hope that helps and thanks for the comment.

Hi mikem.2078 I didn't go into too much depth on it because I haven't had a chance to use it a lot and I want to give it a fair chance. But what I can tell you is yes it is better than LCD screens without local dimming. If you set the local dimming to extreme is is almost as black as OLED, but you will see some blooming around the things that are lit up. The less extreme you set the local dimming the less blooming but also the blacks get more grey. Not as good as OLED but, also much better resolution than anything else on the market right now. I'd say its probably the best in blacks that we will see for awhile with a good FOV. I'll be able to go into more depth once I can spend more time in the headset. Hope that helps.

Hi Gulf76, don't really see much light leakage... I feel like there is a very very small amount reflected in the lenses, but of course this will depend on your face/head shape as to how well it fills in the gaps. I agree about including the 15mm for sure! It's almost like they did the opposite of the HPG2, where by default the HPG2 was made for those that wear glasses and you had to customize it to get closer to the screens if you didn't. Versus with the Crystal, they made it for those who don't need glasses and didn't give us that do need glasses, an option without ordering the 15mm. @@WilliamDeanPlumbingI don't use Steam DCS either... it is SteamVR which runs the Crystal so you should have access to that setting. Let me know if you need help.

@@WilliamDeanPlumbingYes I think I turned it on because I was having some alias issues with the IFFE in the Aero. Performance is better if you keep it off.

I wish I would have understood what you were saying because I didn't have may views or comments at that point and I could have fixed it. Too many now so I guess we will just roll with it. Great catch and thanks for pointing out what he meant @reptileexcq1!

I have been testing for a week and i too found headstrap was too uncomfortable for me..i do have the studio comfort strap , and i will order the vive pro 16 mm face cushion as both the other's make the front fall down and that strap over the top is too elastic for my liking..i have sent ideas to Pimax..to redesign headstrap, its too flimsy my design would be similar to Varjo

Isn't it amazing how we have such comfort issues and many others don't have any? Just shows how individualized a VR experience can be. Thanks again for watching and commenting!

@@GYGOtv Awesome..I'm thinking I may get a refund on the crystal i mean visual are Great, but the headset isca problems..and possibly i may have faulty panels..if you do the math..i end up paying $3200 for 12k... with trade in...where i can bf the Varjo for say with lighthouse and index controllers for same price as Crystal..I mean my 15 days are not up yet..do you think i am going to enjoy vajio?

@@Simmymind360The Vertical FOV will be the biggest difference, but if you don't fall into one of those categories I list as good choices for the Crystal then I'd think the Aero will likely be fine. Might not be quite as good visuals, but probably a lot better than a Crystal with faulty panels! In the end, make sure you watch may main review on the Aero kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNOXm7GB0dyuhZ8.html and maybe any others ones on the channel and try to make an informed decision... I'd hate to say yes and then you get it and hate it. Hope that helps.

Just ran into your YT channel, no" umms" (Okay one or two) good job ! Just got mine yesterday, so uncomfortable out of box . I am an IL2 fan and have a lot of tweaking to do. So right now not impressed. To be fair IL2 engine is horrible. SAD. 13900k 4080FE. Ear phones little different than G2 but heard sounds from Mustang the G2 did not reproduce.

Awesome, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes I do everything unscripted and I have a tendency of "umm" and "so", Maybe you could turn it into a drinking game :) That is the price my viewers pay for my natural opinion and stream of thought, but most viewers that I've heard from don't seem to mind it vs. reading everything off a card. So it sounds like the audio might be better than in the G2 then from your comment? Great to know. So as an IL 2 pilot, you really do need that larger Vertical FOV that I was talking about, I hope you can get it to feel better. Check into Studio Form Creative... That helped mine so much!!! Good Luck!
