Pine Marten visits Loch Arkaig osprey nest - Osprey Cam (2020)

3 жыл бұрынAt 6.49am this morning we had a pine marten visit the Loch Arkaig osprey nest!
Pine martens are not much of a threat to the ospreys now that they can all fly. Earlier in the season, it could take eggs and flightless chicks. With Aila, Doddie and Captain gone, it won't be a threat to Louis and Vera. They were spotted in a nearby tree this morning and will migrate soon.
This year we do have defences on the tree to keep martens off, but these are clever animals and expert climbers. Nothing can be 100% pine marten proof. They have a place in forest life just as the osprey has, so we try not to take sides. Still, we're quite relieved this character was too late this year.

I want to quote here one comment on this video of yours, which I shared on FB. Perhaps this advice is useful and will fit you in the fight against marten invasions: --- Irene Paul: " Here in NH we put a piece of metal around the tree or pole so no animal can climb up. The metal is a strip about 4 feet long & all around the bottom of tree. "

Vera and Louis we’re back at the nest later in the day...at 1643 and back 1740. Hopefully, Vera will have the confidence to head South soon and allowing Louis to leave also....

After the pine marten taking the three eggs in a previous season I thought this nest had been retrofitted to prevent this occurring.

Hi Margery, yes the lower part of the nest tree trunk has a slippery sleeve fitted which is covered in grease so martens cannot get purchase. Lower branches have been removed so there are no jumping-on points. Further up the trunk there is an electrified wire wrap which will give any raider a mild shock. The nest platform also has a layer of chicken-wire through it which stops martens burrowing through. However, this one seems to have evaded all of our defences. They're very clever!
