Look man,... I'm 50 years old. First concert I ever went to was The Wall in 1980. I gotta say that it is heartwarming to see a young man with so much passion and familiarity with and for my favorite band. To be honest, I disagree with a few points, but I applaud your perspective. Perhaps the parts we disagree on is due to the difference in our original experience... For example, In the 80's, I was a huge fan. Played out on all their existing work, I was desperate for new Floyd. David got Richard and Nick together, minus Roger, and gave us something. The sound fit the times. I got new Gilmore solo's. David's voice was familiar.... It wasn't their best, but it was good. Especially compared to what else was coming out at the time. So, I admit that hearing Momentary Lapse of Reason now takes me back to a time when it was more than acceptable music. That being said, resetting myself as objective as I can muster, still would ague that it's not a "Bad" album. There is great guitar work, I don't think David's singing it ever bad, Richards keyboards are all over the album... It's just not top shelf like Darkside. But that's not fair, unless you measure everyone against Pink Floyd's best. I mean, at the time, Jefferson Airplane reformed as Jefferson Starship and produced "We Built This City". Ozzy was wearing a cape with moons and stars on it. Whitney Houston was at the top of the charts. Rock Bands were wearing eyeliner and covered in hair spray. I'll climb down off my soapbox now and return to rest on my walker. I just am happy to see someone so young that I can talk this in depth about Floyd with.

Josh Shrum pretty much meddle you to the wall are the essential Pink Floyd albums. Including wish you were here (I noticed you didn’t list that one) but honestly their entire 70s run of albums are worth listening. Atom heart mother is in my opinion the weakest 70s album but it’s still a good album. Even obscured by clouds is good, even though it is a soundtrack to a movie it is still a great album. It’s better than their other film soundtrack “more”. Basically I’d say dive into all the 70s albums (Atom heart mother, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall.) then I’d say go back and check out the first two albums if you haven’t (Piper at the gates of dawn, and saucerful of secrets) they are pretty different from what they did in the 70s but still great albums and I would consider them essential. Other than that I don’t really find the album More that great, it’s got a few songs that are ok but it’s not nearly as good as the other soundtrack album. Ummagumma is better than people make it out to be, the live half of the album is great and the studio half has some parts that are lacking but once you know all the 70s albums and their first two. It’s a good one to check out, just don’t take the studio half so seriously, a lot of it is VERY experimental and avant-garde so it’s a very weird album. As for any album after the wall. I’ve never been too impressed by The Final Cut, but I know some people like it a lot. I really like A Momentary Lapse of Reason, some people don’t. I know some people praise the Division Bell and others don’t, and same with the Endless River. Over all I’d say the most important albums are the 70s albums, then the first two. After that I’d personally recommend giving Ummagumma an honest chance cuz it’s really not as bad as people say. Then I’d recommend dabbling in some of the post wall albums. Sorry for the book but I hope you enjoy what you hear. Such a great band. They’re the band that made me listen to music in full albums and not just a few songs.

I've only heard the 4 big ones 1. DSOTM (I like the way every song flows right into the other, the eerie vibe and Richard Wright was the MVP for this one, his organ and piano playing was on point) 2. The Wall (Best concept album ever! The story of Pink is just crazy, the fact that Roger wrote 90% of this is just.... unbelievable. Comfortably Numb had best solo) 3. Wish You Were Here (Shine On You is out of this world, it's my favourite PF song, Have a Cigar I'd groovy and Wish You Were Here is one of the most beautiful song ever) 4. Animals (PF's lyrical masterpiece, Roger definitely put all his fury and rage into this. Dave's outro solo in Pigs is breathtaking, the anger and Rick's keyboard was spot on as usual. The acoustic intro and outro are great too though I feel the album could've been shorter)

Just to clarify, Wish You Were Here was basically put together by Roger Waters, as yes, you are correct, the success of Dark Side Of The Moon both burnt the band members out from the non-stop touring they did from 1972 through 1974, but also due to the wealth and fame it brought them. Gilmour, Mason and Wright were out doing their own thing and Waters was the driving force. He is the one who had to pull the rest back into the studio, as creativity was Waters' outlet. The album was supposed to consist of three songs: Raving and Drooling, and You Gotta Be Crazy (which later became Sheep and Dogs, respectively, on the Animals album) on one side, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond as the second full side, as they were playing all three during their tour. Gilmour fought hard to keep this, but Waters won out, stating the three did not work together as one cohesive album. They then crafted Welcome To The Machine, Have A Cigar and Wish You Were Here to fill out the album and fit with the concept: absence. And to correct you, (not trying to be an ass, just stating fact) the albums concept is of absence. Absence of hope (Welcome To The Machine), absence of caring (Have A Cigar), absence of love (Wish You Were Here) and absence of Syd (Shine On). But, it doesn't end there. Waters wanted to break up Shine On into two sections and once again, Gilmour fought him. And again, Waters won out, once he outlined the whole thing. Mason and Wright agreed, then Gilmour reluctantly agreed, since they were a democratic band (at that time). To this day, each band member stated it is their favorite of their albums - even Gilmour! So it is a fight we should all be thankful that Waters won, since this is their most personal and emotional album. My personal favorite. The last album I want to hear when I shuffle off this mortal coil. Trivia: the final notes on the album (Shine On Part IX) are from See Emily Play, the very first song of Syd's they recorded. The ultimate final tribute. They also tell the story that this album was meant to be, as Syd showed up in the studio as they were finishing the mix! I will let you find that story, it's eerie and heartbreaking all at once. If you love Floyd I highly recommend you read Inside Out, by Nick Mason. You can't get a better history or view of the band. Also, if you love this album I invite you to watch the great documentary on the making of the album: The Story Of Wish You Were Here: www.amazon.com/Pink-Floyd-Story-Wish-Were/dp/B007X6ZRMA/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=the+story+of+wish+you+were+here&qid=1603148703&s=movies-tv&sr=1-2 I really do enjoy the fact you are so passionate for my favorite band of all time, I love your enthusiasm. It warms my heart to see young people embracing music that I believe will stand the test of time long after were are gone. So much so that my daughter is also a huge Floyd fan. Shine on!

The first half of the concert was "Set Controls For the Heart of the Sun," "Astronomy Domine," "Be Careful With That Axe Eugene" and "Echoes." There was an intermission followed by the entirety of "Dark Side Of The Moon" (which had not been released yet) beginning to end. Nice perspective from someone of the younger generation on Pink Floyd's discography. I differ on quite a few points though, except Animals, i love that album immensely, and reckon that's Pink Floyd's finest hour both musically and lyrically. Dark Side Of The Moon is the most perfectly conceived album, though it may not even be Pink Floyd's greatest album...that's testament to how good several of their albums really are. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason holds a sweet spot in my heart seeing as i grew up in the 80's and know what 80's music felt like during that era, it's very nostalgic for me and takes me right back to my childhood...good times. I feel really emotional about The Final Cut. Since my Father past away many years ago i've grown really attached to the lyrics and the often understated musical compositions that fill this album with foreboding and ominous loss. Division Bell is a nice album, clean and crisp sounds, more like a David Gilmour solo album to be fair, but enjoyable none the less. The early Psychedelic era Piper At The Gates Of Dawn is of course a whimsical Pop/Space Rock classic, a gateway into the mind of the highly influencial Syd Barrett. Enjoyable enough. Each person has their favourite Pink Floyd era whether that be the Syd era, the Waters era, or the Gilmour era; each has it's merits and appeals, though being honest anything other than the Waters led era is to disregard the lyrical & musical behemoth that we know and love today. Nice video bro 👍

cmon the keyboard work on shine on 6-9 was fucking mind bending, it tells a story, literally, I always imagine a calm sea with syd in a rowing boat, then the storm comes pulls him further into the storm till he is at the point of no return it then washes him away into a whirlpool or over a waterfall with the other members trying to reel him in, but he is too far gone to save. maybe that`s the intention i don`t know but jesus what an experience....

@Kaden Banta-Martin @Kaden Banta-Martin I don't considered More nor Obscured By Clouds because they're soundtracks. But if it were to be considered, More would be between Final Cut and Endless River and Obscured By Clouds would be between Dark Side and Piper At The Gates of Down. And The Division Bell is 2nd place, it's right there. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I love The Division Bell.

No not just you, post waters period is very interesting, from a musical point of view, and the themes of absence, separation, lack of communication, regrets, lack of reason. It s an essential point of view on their past. Pf theme of past is omni present : post Syd, post Waters, post second war... I feel it is also a far mor optimistic period thanks to Gilmour, not so intense of course, but he tells us, we made mistakes, we fight against each others, but we have to keep on talking to create and live together in peace. It may seem evident and simple to say but when you have lived a long life you know perfectly what he means, that is just the hardest part of our lives. The pf post Waters albums are a positive answer to their previous ones. Yes the sun is eclipsed by the sun, but that is not the end sun will shine bright for next generations : -)

Pretty good run down. PF has been my favorite band since I discovered them at age 11. And this coming from a guy who played in metal bands (death metal some would call it). First album was wish u were here. It tripped me out. I left it for several years until just recently, I'm finding I'm rediscovering them and they were as good, if not better then I remembered. Pretty heavy stuff for an innocent 11 year old whose favorite group up to that point was weird al, haha. Love those 80's

Thanks for the in depth analysis. I am very much aligned with your whole review. Animals is also my favourite album of the Non Syd Barrett stuff. I love "Piper" but I do realise, it is almost like a different band, different era; so in my mind, I have two Pink Floyds - Syd's version and "the band". I agree that everything after The Wall was in sharp decline.

I personally for a while didn’t like A Momentary Lapse of Reason. I always shat on its 80s production and sound. But recently revisiting it, I appreciate it so much and think it’s Pink Floyd’s most underrated album. It’s honestly great and I think you should give it another chance, and just embrace its 80s sound. Also wtf Not Now John is like my favorite song on The Final Cut. Which is an album I really don’t like at all. I was surprised to see it as your least favorite song lol.

I wanted to see a good review of Pink Floyd and this really hit the spot. I'll confess I fast forwarded to DSOTM but I enjoyed every minute and agreed with almost every view of yours thereafter. When I was young and being brought up on Floyd, I always thought that Animals was closer to their earlier (pre-DSOTM) sound and then it was WYWH and then DSOTM. It all collided into the music of my youth and I didn't try to discern then, but as I got older and looked into it all, the more it surprised me that the order I had imagined those 3 albums to be in was actually reversed! I wholeheartedly agree about Animals being #1, although I'd take Pigs (Three Different Ones) as my absolute masterpiece Floyd song. The whole album is just outstanding, although I'd recommend giving a Floyd virgin an overview. It is moody and brilliant, but not for first-timers. DSOTM is just a masterpiece, as is WYWH. The song itself is probably the best Floyd song for a new listener, it's just so melancholic and generally beautiful that it can't fail to grab you. I could go on and on. I might just do that, I've been thinking about doing my own Floyd reviews for individual songs, getting really in-depth with them, and your video has really given me inspiration. Thanks, I'm off to check your other content.

I’m an older guy and tripped out in the 70’s to all the Floyd albums. I remember well Dark Side and Wish when they came out. Oh what fabulous albums. Oh what a lovely decade. However, I agree to differ with you re Obscured by Clouds. I really like that album and love their back to basics rock. The earlier Sid albums leave something to be desired in my opinion. Echoes sort of followed on organically from Atom Heart Mother. I love your Wish you Were Here appraisal. It’s about right. When it’s again time to listen to Dark Side if the Moon - absolutely nothing else will do! Cheers, Dave ✌️

Man, that was the most awesome retrospective I've ever seen on Floyd! Including store bought crap!!!! Lol. They are by far one if not my favorite band of all time. I just love your enthusiasm. You actually made me weep when you reviewed Animals. My favorite album as well and maybe of all time too. Only major disagreement is that I like the Final Cut a lot more than you. But your right, you're absolutely right. The songs feel half assed and just as they get good, they just either fade away, or go back to meandering around. It feels as if Roger put Gilmour in a cage and wouldn't let him out! Lmao. Not Now John is cheesy as fuck but I love it... And my favorite is the closer, Two Suns in the Sunset. It's so dark and Nihilistic. Actually the whole albums like that. I don't know, maybe that's why I love it so. Lol. I truly hate and agree with you 100% on The apply titled A momentary Sack Of Shit! Goddamn god awful album. I didn't buy it when it came out and only own it now because I wanted to complete my Floyd collection. Period. It's worse than any of the solo Gilmour records. Sounds like an self conscious 80s abomination. All those people who came and wrote lyrics didn't know shit about Floyd obviously. And The god awful dogs of war! Ugh. Horrible. The Division Bell I actually like, to me is like an imitation of a Pink Floyd album featuring most members of Pink Floyd. Lmao. Funny, again your most hated song is my fave Coming back to life. But that's because a relationship I once had, and it was kind of my song for her when we, well, you know. Ha. I just turned 51 this month. Don't feel bad, I never got to see them either. Although I did get to see Roger Waters do the wall. Wish it would have been his last tour though. The set he did was amazing. You should do a couple more of these on Gilmore and Waters solo albums. If you can hang with them. Lol. Be interesting to see how you feel about them. Well, enough of my yapping. Thanks again for that awesome retrospective. Laterz 🤘🙃👏👽

Great ranking. You really took a deep dive there and examined the albums in meticulous detail. First of all, yes, it is Nick Mason who says "One of these days i'm going to cut you up into little pieces", he used a voice-changer for that. Nick can also be heard in Atom Heart Mother Suite where he says "Silence in the studio!" (again, Nick used a voice changer). By the way, your favourite Atom Heart Mother song is my least favourite Atom Heart Mother song. How can anyone can find it even remotely entetaining in insane to me but each to their own. I think there are THREE TYPES of PINK FLOYD: 1 - The Syd Era 2 - The Mainstream/Popular Area (also known as the Era between The Syd Era and the Post Roger Waters Era lmao, basically the most globally familiar music of Pink Floyd). 3 - The Post Roger Waters Era The Syd Era is so vastly different to the rest of their stuff that it almost feels like a Beatles album, you're right, like a completely different band altogether. My Top 15 Pink Floyd albums starting with my Favourite going down to Least Favourite are as follows: 1. The Dark Side Of The Moon 2. Wish You Were Here 3. Atom Heart Mother 4. Animals 5. The Wall 6. Meddle 7. Obscured By Clouds 8. Ummagumma 9. The Division Bell 10. More 11. The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 12. The Endless River 13. A Saucerful Of Secrets 14. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 15. The Final Cut I have to so, the order of my ranking has a tendency to change. It's a really weird thing.. who knows what my ranking will look like 10 years or even 20 years from now.

My favourites: 1. Wish you were here, wich includes my fav theme in Rock History: Shine on you crazy diamond 2 and 3. Dark side and The wall 4.Animals 5.Meddle 6 Obscured by clouds I also like The piper at the gates of dawn but I cannot rate it because it's a different artist to me. It was Barrett's band basically and the style was unique and very personal. I know that it was rather influential about the subsequent music of the band but Pink Floyd evolved and developed massively afterwards so it's a different animal to me. Greetings from Spain.

It was a great relief when Waters finally took his ball away in the hope that the rest would all go into retirement. Water's ever more shrill political barracking was already getting on my nerves and the Final Cut was the final straw. Therefore AMLOR was a welcome relief from my suffering, and in my opinion, is a much-underated work, as is the Division Bell. What is more, many of the band's most effective live performances over later years have featured many tracks from these albums. For example, High Hopes, Coming Back to Life, On the Turning Away, and above all Sorrow. When above all Gilmour, the band, and their production team hit their straps live they could make a Bay City Rollers song sound epic.
