Firewood season is winding down. I had one stubborn round and few odds and ends that I sat aside when I was splitting. The round has four or five knots in it and better suited for my chainsaw than my axe. With the sun out I thought now would be a good time to take care of business. Out to the shop I go. I grabbed one of my favorite saws, The Pioneer Farmsaw. She starts up easy, has tons of power and pulls hard with a 28' bar. What's not to like?
I hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching!

That old school pioneer pulls that 28 inches just fine,,its not always about speed with those old vintage saws anyway,, its the fun of operating the old school saws and enjoying all the different makes and models ant inspecting all the differences and oddities of each saw,,,,but as always love watching your great videos and see you having fun and showing us all your cool saws

That is true. Most vintage saws are running between, 6000-10,000 rpm, a lot of low end grunt. I definitely enjoy running all my vintage saws. Thanks!

Thanks! You're right, lots of low end grunt. The P-42 is dang near identical to the Farmsaw I believe. I think the P-42 was marketed as Pro saw.

Nice saw ! The Farmsaw is a consumer grade P41. They cheapened up a few things on the saw so they could sell it for less than the P41. Still an excellent saw though. Sounds like your carb has the built in governor. Pioneer really made some of the best saws.

Thanks. I had read that the Farmsaw was a homeowner version of the P-41. I never did find out where they cut corners though? I was not aware that they had a built in governor. Thanks for that, I'll have to check it out. I agree with you, some of the best saws made. I love running em'!

@@EightWheelsRollin One of the main things they did to cheapen the Farm Saw up was the starter mechanism. I can't remember what else was done at the moment. Your saw was cutting nice and smooth in the wood, but as soon as the load was taken off, it starts to blubber. The governor in the carb basically puts extra fuel in the venturi if the engine speed starts to get too high, partially flooding it. The best way to tune a governed saw is do cuts, then do minor adjustments, try again till you get the best cutting speed under a load. My big Pioneer's all have the built in governor. Many of my Mac's have them too. Keeps them from failing.

I remembered what the things Pioneer did to lessen the cost of the Farm Saw. 1. was the cheaper starter 2. no chain break on early versions 3. a restrictor in the inlet system to cut the power 4. a restrictive baffle in the exhaust to cut power. They were hoping that you would want to get the extra performance by buying a P41 or 42 to get it. Removing the restrictors gave the same performance, as the powerhead is the same. What a dumb marketing idea that was !

Interesting. I'm assuming it was the pawls they changed out. I'll have to investigate the issue further when I have time. Good information on the governor, thanks. I don't mind running the saw the way it is, governor and all. It runs well in the wood. I'm definitely hooked on Pioneer saws!

I just saw the second part to your response. That is dumb!! I was really baffled as the specs on the saws are exactly the same, if memory serves. I do appreciate the additional information. Now I need to perform some Farmsaw surgery.
