Pirates is a bog standard Commedia dell'arte sitcom. They didn't usually have hero. That was the person who threw a pie at the man in grease paint. Which was invented only later by English bastardizations, you might ahve heard of blackface? That clown imagery was invented just to be cruel to "drunks" who deserve it, and then you dropped the "deserved it" part, because wine can't make a black man's nose red.

Some facts about the Sharks in this film: The sharks were also given broken spines and fins which allowed animators to have the sharks perform erratic, jagged, and inelegant movements. "We wanted them to swim as if they were zombie sharks", adds visual effects supervisor Patrick Ledda. At one point, the sharks take on a rowboat holding Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), biting at the craft and jumping out of the water, a task made more difficult by the fact that Depp and Thwaites were shot practically on a stage.

Honestly here's a really Interesting Fact for you : Javier Bardem imagined the character of Captain Salazar as a cross between a bull in the ring and a cante jondo singer (tragic Spanish flamenco music). Additionally, Bardem studied the history of the Spanish Royal Navy in preparation for the role.
@pma281
@pma281 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the trivia fact. As a Spaniard, I kind of appreciate that bullfighting (tauromaquia) and cante jondo (a style of flamenco, aka traditional Southern Spanish music) are part of my country's culture, whether I want to accept it or not. Also, the fact that Javier Bardem prepared for the role by studying the Spanish Royal Navy/Armada Real Española is a badass one. I'm underwhelmed by the fact the screenwriters, directors, producers and crew didn't know how to handle him. His character (Armando Salazar) is no Davy Jones at all. He looks badass, but if you scratch the surface, he's disappointing as a villain imo. And this is the fault of the crew behind this movie, not Bardem's fault, bc he acts pretty well, even in movies where they treat him as a Hispanic villain! However, Penelope Cruz, or Pe, as we like to call her here in Spain (she's Bardem's wife) overacted too much bc of her Spicy Latina persona qe see too much in Hollywood, and that took me away from On Stranger Tides!

@windowsVD

Pirates movies have been guilty of retcons for a while.
@mentaya11
@mentaya11 Жыл бұрын
@@windowsVD Ehhh. Most aren't as blatant. Some, for example, consider the function of the compass to be a retcon. They don't really *specify* what it does in the first movie. They just show it gets them to the island. The explanation given in the second film, that it points to what you want most, was clearly added for that movie and not preplanned, but it also doesn't retcon what it did in the first, as that explanation could still fit. This, on the other hand, is a direct contradiction of what was previously stated. It might be possible to make a plot that connects the two, but it would be difficult.
@windowsVD
@windowsVD Жыл бұрын
@@mentaya11 The compass thing I could let slide. But I’d say the whole Jack being one of the 9 pirate lords is just as blatant. Literally everyone treated him like a insignificant nobody and then it’s suddenly revealed in the third movie that he’s actually one of the 9 most important pirates alive and needed to be resurrected from the dead because he was that important. Barbossa apparently never faced any consequences for starting a mutiny against a pirate lord and thought Jack was dead for like 10 years and apparently never caught word that a top level pirate like Jack was still alive.
@mentaya11
@mentaya11 Жыл бұрын
@@windowsVD You know...that's a pretty good one. I don't think it's as blatant only because they never said he *wasn't* in the first one. It's only circumstantial...but golly if you havn't presented a lot of circumstantial evidence. He seems like a minor pirate of some back and forth success, who a few people have heard of but most have not, who only ever had 1 ship under his control. Compare that to any other pirate lord from the movies and it doesn't really match up, does it? It was probably just there to make the main character relevant to the new plot but...yeah, that doesn't make it good.

Unfortunately, yeah. The one I got is imported from Ireland (it's part of the box-set), so that's the title. I honestly thought that was the correct title for a long time, while at the same time I kept thinking to myself "Y'know, _Dead Men Tell No Tales_ would sound like a much better title", just to finally find out that here in America that _was_ the title. Calling it _Salazar's Revenge_ everywhere else is really stupid, as no one knew who the hell Salazar was before they watched the film. It'd be like calling the first one _Jack Sparrow's Revenge_ when everyone seeing that would be thinking "Who the hell is Jack Sparrow?".

I saw this one in a theater and really enjoyed it. A friend of mine worked on the designs for some of the CGI creatures (I know the zombie seagulls that flew around Bardem's ship were his). The series really should have ended as a trilogy, but this one is a whole lot more fun than the 4th one, at least. It gives some satisfying closure to most of the characters, and the scene with Jack Sparrow robbing the bank is just plain fun...it reminds me of the bit with the rolling water wheel in the second film.

We finally made it, “Pirates Month” has come to an end. It also looks like you’re going to review “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” next week… I CAN’T WAIT! After next week, please go back to the sea for one more adventure. This has nothing to do with pirates in general, but is based on a true story that, like “At World’s End”, was the most expensive movie ever made when it came out. It starts of with a present-day expedition to find a diamond, then goes back in time to the real-life disaster that happened 84 years ago. There is another protagonist called “Jack”in this time period who starred opposite Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”, which is a coincidence. This movie made up for its huge price tag to not only become the highest grossing movies of its time, but the very 1st movie in history to gross $1 BILLION! The director topped that over 10 years later with a blue allegory for Native Americans that “borrows” elements from afterschool specials about protecting the environment. This movie I’m actually giving clues to also won 11 Oscars, including best picture. 💰💵 My birthday is coming soon, & it would be a good present… PLEASE DOUG, PLEASE! 😊

Troubled Production: The film was being produced as Johnny Depp was going through a bitter divorce from his wife Amber Heard. As such, he was chronically late to the set, as most of his time was spent drinking and getting into fights with Heard, to the point where it ate into the schedule as the set often came to a halt for hours at a time. It got to the point where a production assistant was hired just to wait outside Depp's house and announce that he was awake when they saw the lights inside come on. There was also a two week delay when Depp sliced the tip of his finger off in a blowout with Heard and had to fly back home to the US to see a specialist and have surgery. This was nothing compared to his fight with the Australian government, which took up a whole year and saw Disney and all the Pirates fans wondering if Depp was going to be charged with dog smuggling. While Amber Heard ultimately pled guilty after it was discovered that the dogs belonged to her, the year long saga ultimately led to Disney dropping Depp from the franchise. It was being reported throughout 2020 that he might be returning in some capacity but it remains to be seen if it will come to fruition after Depp lost a defamation lawsuit in the UK against a tabloid and is now legally allowed to be referred to as a “wife beater” since he was fired from two other projects after the verdict. He also continued down the litigation path in the US directly against Heard which ended in a split decision in which he was found to have been defamed by Heard (with a $10 million judgement) in an opinion piece she wrote in the Washington Post but also that he defamed her via his lawyer and for which she was awarded $2 million. However, they settled about six months after the trial as the appeals process started with Heard paying him $ 1 million via her insurer but she admitted to no wrongdoing in her statement and not did not have to sign an NDA. The judge in the case found 12 of 14 instances (one hadn’t had a full deposition and one was inconclusive) in the case met the civil bar for domestic violence.

@gamemediafan1714
@gamemediafan1714 Жыл бұрын
Wow. You're obviously trying to paint a pro-Heard narrative and it's not gonna work in the slightest 1.) UK Trial: judge's son works at the Sun newspaper, which Depp was suing. So immediately you have a conflict of interest. The judge's acceptance of 12 of the 14 counts also came from him making assumptions about Heard's character based on her claimed donation to the ACLU. 2.) We've already seen the evidence that it was Heard that chopped his finger off. She claimed he did it on a phone hanger on the wall, yet photos of the room where the incident took place showed that there was no wall phone at all. There was also a recording where Heard is saying "sorry" for the finger being chopped off. It wasn't allowed in the USA trial because a person in that tape had passed away and thus couldn't be used legally.

@@legiongamerworkbruhben6058 they're testing the waters right now. We'll see if any new Pirates spinoff (either a movie or a TV series) sees the light of day in the future or not. We know Johnny Depp has it pretty hard right now. Some of you may be deceived by the rumor (idk if it's true or not)that Margot Robbie will star in it. I personally have mixed feelings about this. On the one side, it's a lame excuse to aim the Pirates product to extremist SJW/alt-left audiences, while on the other, it's a great opportunity to see more female pirates in the future. And no, the Pirates films are not reactionary/alt-right propaganda, they're just fun, escapist and entertaining movies, especially the first 2 or 3 movies. While politics may or may not be influential in popular and indie movies, I think we should get them out of these, shall we? Now, moving on to another story, Anne Bonny was a prime example of this. She was a badass in a world where men could rule freely, while women were restricted to being prostitutes and the like. We've all heard of badass male pirates roaming the high seas, hunting for preys, both human and imperialistic (British, Spanish, Dutch, French and even Portuguese empires) and animals such as sharks, turtles, etc. This report may have my biases, but it's good enough for quite some people to appreciate.

The Critic didn't mention it but the compass kept changing lore in this again. In the first movie it was said to be broken, then it was said to lead to what the person wants, then Tia Dalma said she gave it to Jack, then here Jack got it from his former captain and suddenly the compass is cursed.
@houndofculann1793
@houndofculann1793 Жыл бұрын
IIRC in the first movie it's only stated to be broken by a person who thinks it's supposed to be an ordinary compass, isn't the only line regarding that when Beckett says "a compass that doesn't point north"? Sure, visually it didn't point at any one direction in his hand either, but at least that could be interpreted as him not having any idea what he wants in life. If so, then really the only retcon is the one that happens in this movie, the ones before were just filling in more information about it.

One of the biggest issues about this movie is it doesn't follow any of its established lore at all. -Jack Sparrow already found the Trident of Poseidon was he was a teenage stowaway. -Jack Sparrow got the Wicked Wench from when he was an employee in the EITC. -Jack Sparrow got the Compass from Tia Dalma. -We see at the end of AWE (10 years later) the Flying Dutchman appears to be uncursed. Yet the kid barely ages a day and when he finds the Flying Dutchman, both Will and the ship are cursed. -In OST, we see the Black Pearl is sailing in a storm while flying Barbossa's flag. Here, it's sailing on gentle seas and flying Jack Sparrow's flag. And if the ship was peppered with cannonfire, shouldn't we see a lot of damage, or dead bodies, or at the very least, Barbossa's leg hanging from a rope? And where's Cotton's parrot? -If Salazar was such a huge threat to piracy, wouldn't the Brethren Court have assembled to take action against him? We see Jack's father, Teague, standing right behind him at the Wicked Wench's wheel. -We see that Marty is in this film, which tells me he either survived Blackbeard's assault or jumped ship before that happened. We also see that Murtogg and Mulroy (the two former british soldiers) are now serving Barbossa, which suggests they either also survived or jumped ship too. What happened to Pintel, Ragetti and Cotton? And when did Scrum decide to leave Barbossa for Jack Sparrow? -If Barbossa got his original outfit back, why does he go back to wearing that stupid wig? He loved wearing that hat. -If Salazar was 'Jack's greatest fear,' then why could Jack barely remember him at all, and why did he show no ounce of fear when facing Salazar as a boy?

Barbossa's character arc was the best thing in this movie for me. I found the anchor scene very emotional and touching. The fact, that he felt guilty for abandoning his own daughter because he knew he would suck as a loving parent. So in the end, he found peace after saving Carina, Jack and the Black Pearl. And his legacy will live on with Carina. It's the best way to end the story of Barbossa. Another "to be continued..." like in At Worlds end wouldn't work at all. And Hector is not the guy who deserves a happy ending. He's still a backstabbing greedy liar. So the heroic redemption arc was the best option He was a true pirate till the end. A Pirate's life indeed🫡🥲

One thing I don't like about this movie is Jack Sparrow, or more specifically, how Jack Sparrow is written. As bad as At World's End is, at least it had Jack Sparrow being the Jack Sparrow I know and love. He was still entertaining, Johnny Depp still did a good job playing the character, and the whole thing with multiple Jacks was amusing. In this movie, he's just a bumbling buffoon that isn't really funny. It's not the Jack Sparrow we know and love.

One minor thing, Jack's compass makes no sense in this film. First, he definitely doesn't know about the curse being tied to the compass. Him looking at it, saying the line "Pirate's life" is more so in reference to the fact that despite that being one of his most prized possessions, which has magic on it, he has fallen so far that he is willing to trade this priceless item just for some booze to help him forget his problems for a while. A good idea in theory... but why now? Jack has given his compass away REPEATEDLY. He gave it Elizabeth in 2, gave it to Will in 3, and Gibs in 4. Why does the curse only break NOW and not any other time in the last several years?
