The Yankees' CC Sabathia joined John Smoltz to break down his evolution on the mound and pitching with less velocity.

Secretly hoping CC makes it to 3k strikeouts. With that body, with all kinds of knee problems you would have thought this man was done by age 34. But 18 years in the Majors... props, CC.

Smoltz kept throwing that little jab in there, "you used to throw hard, but you don't anymore". I think if i were CC i would've mentioned something like "yeah John, when you were a starter you were able to throw hard for 6+ effectively, but then you got old too and got moved to the bullpen"
@taekim6819
@taekim6819 5 жыл бұрын
@@OrionsVantage You should really look at history before just looking at the statistics. John Smoltz did get converted to closing for large section in second half of his career, but that was to the benefit of the team. Not as a result of performance, nor velocity change. He accepted the change for the team and excelled. BTW, he ended up as a starting pitcher at the end of his career (including at age 40). Mets fan that have respect for the Braves pitchers during that time period/generation.
@stevenkunzer9027
@stevenkunzer9027 5 жыл бұрын
It is a compliment, Smoltz is basically saying he has been successful as two different pitchers. CC doesn’t seem to feel inadequate because he doesn’t throw mid 90’s anymore it is just real life.

CC as a Yankee Fan we can't thank you enough for being so responsible for the team winning since you arrived. One thing you did more visibly than any pitcher or player in history is support your teammates and you deserve mad props for that. Thanks CC unlike many or most big contracts yours was worth every penny.

I have always said this about CC -- that he became great by reinventing himself when he lost his fastball velocity. Even though I can't stand him for having been most notably a Yankee (I grew up in Brookline, MA, and he owned my Sox so often I've lost count -- hated to see him start against us), I've always respected his intelligent approach to pitching and the way he was able to prolong his career by becoming a finesse guy and employing more pitches. He also comes across as a really Zen dude here, and I respect that too ("did it make you mad when you heard you were washed up because you lost velocity?" "no, it's just part of the game." Way to go, CC. Long life and happiness to you!

I think it's more of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," idea. When C.C. was throwing gas, nobody could hit him so there was no reason for him to think beyond blowing it by the batter. As velocity dipped, he had to get more creative. That shift seems to be what separates most pitchers as they age. A lot of them can't change when their body doesn't allow them to do the things they once could.

it’s crazy how we call 93 low velocity because the average is 95-96 i think, and as we know a lot of people hit 99-102 now. with the amount of time it takes the ball to hit the catcher, you would think that it’s impossible to hit a baseball, also with people with high velocity and good command, this is a sport that deserves more hype and recognition. getting back to calling low 90s low velocity is crazy because isn’t the mount like 80 or 90 feet from home plate? i don’t know the number, and pitchers with their different styles, the ball may look faster just because of their style, pitching is truly an art, CC doesn’t throw the hardest but got 3,000 strikeouts, that’s amazing

@@kadinbrabender9836 last year, CC had to reach a certain amount of innings pitched in order to get a 500k bonus. He was cruising in the last game of the season that he pitched, he was nearing the innings plateau, until he purposely hit Jesus Sucre in order to get revenge for the rays hitting Austin Romine. He was quickly ejected and didn't reach the innings # that he needed. The Yankees later gave him a 500k bonus anyway.

It depends because if you can get away with it then there is no problem but if you can't then you have to make changes and you say Nolan Ryan but you realized that when Nolan got to the rangers he already was a different pitcher because he wasn't blowing people away like he used to his velo dropped some miles per hour and he started mixing in his pitches like the change up so even Nolan had to adjust with a bit of lost in velo but he was able to maintain power his whole career so that's a different story a guy like maddux at the other hand couldn't do that so he had to adjust and learn to do it differently
