Pixel 8 Pro Long Term Review - Its all in the DLC

Күн бұрынIt's been a few months now with the Pixel 8 Pro, and while things get better, line goes up - there are some big trends that are looking annoying.
This might even be compouded with the Galaxy S24 series going a similar way, but being clear that their DLC will be subscription in the future...

Are you seriously complaining that Pro camera controls are DLC? Of course they are not. Also, best take is completely done on device, as are improved magic eraser and the audio eraser that you mentioned and many other functions (e.g. the translation and calling features that no other phone comes close to). It is only the AI-wallpaper, Video Boost and magic editor that are in the cloud at the moment. Please inform us which phones do those things on device?

They're purely software locked features Camera controls for example can work on older devices, but it's Google who decide to keep it exclusively on the 8Pro for now

@@FilthyCasualTech Ok, I get what you are saying now. I do think there are more things to consider though. Video Boost, AI wallpapers and Magic Editor all need Google servers to perform them. For the Pixel 8 line, this service is included in the price. But maybe they could offer it to older models as a subsciption? Also Video Boost might only work well on the Pro because of the increased memory. Older Pixel phones don't have the hardware to be able to perform this function. Maybe Pro camera controls are coming to the Pixel 8 and older phones, but this is not just software locking, the different sensors need different algorithms to be able to do these setting justice. Again, probably Google prioritized working on the Pro with the better all-round sensors?

SamsungAI on their new device looks to be free for 2 years, then it will most likely move to a subscription model I guess I just worry of the industry trend. Requiring backend servers makes features a prime candidate to be shut down in the future due to costs. I would agree with you with Video Boost though that older devices may not manage the capture and storage too well, but for Pro Controls - this has already been ported to older Pixels in modded APK's It's really just a balance, I like the crazy new stuff Google comes up with, I just hope they don't try to add extra monetisation to it in the future.

i currently have the pizel 6... I thought about the pixel 8 but i would rather hold out to get a bigger screen. Im sef not paying all that money for a pro with slow charging and weak battery. This is probably my last pixel to be honest. The nothing 2a offers everything i want at 350. Bigger battery and bigger screen and faster charging with a better design and better battery lifw. Pixel always struggles with battery life.

It's mostly the exclusive OS features these days, if all other stuff holds okay Personally I like too many Pixel features but the Nothing devices are looking nice lately
