So the original thickness of the crankshaft to the hollow center (which I thought was for lubrication) is around an inch or so. It broke. The weld to repair the shaft could not be more than a quarter of an inch thick. Hard to say as some of it was machined down. We all know that a quarter of an inch is much stronger than an inch. This crank should last around 2 or 3 revolutions which is what the guarentee was for I am sure. The accuracy of the machining is a close as the wire feeler they used to center the shaft. The tolerance is probably in the plus or minus one fourth of an inch or so. I am sure the shaft front and rear bearings lined up, well sorta. A little 1000 weight oil and a really strong starter motor and all is OK. Well for a minute. Ear plugs recommended for the engine knock, but they would fit in with the safety sandals.

@@SuperchiefApache You don't understand. You might think this is Pakistan, but it's actually Bradford, UK. If it would be filmed in Pakistan, we would see developement workers all over the place, teaching these guys how to use chairs, tables and even toilet bowles, but there were not. This is clear proof that it could not have been filmed in Pakistan.

Love the dial indicating calipers. Actually, a nice digital micrometer would have been preferred, but when using a file to flatten the soft bearing surface, a mic wouldn't really be necessary since it's not being surface hardened, that crank won't last long anyway....

I believe if that were dropped on the floor. It would fall apart into 3 pieces! The additional piece of steel wasn't weld prepared. The weld are not near full penetration. Seems the welds actually holding it together by are thin as a sheet of paper I would have cut deep into the area between the different metals and welded them together starting deep inside the crankshaft. Then move to the next side. As it is seems simply dropping it would break it! It would been better to put a 12mm both through the crank . And weld it in through the break, then drill out the bolt. Atleast the whole journal would be welded. I don't think this is real. Just a video to post. Looks like a staged "need for repair" cut a junk crank in half, then video a bad repair of it! Sorry, alot of these guys do amazing work, not like lazy Americans . However this I feel is not it! This is like mailing your roommate a letter, waste of a stamp!

Isnt the hollow parts of the crankshaft for the oil to flow through it?

Yes, and I hope they remember to drill a hole in the journal to get the oil tro the rod bearing or they will be doing the job over again.

I would have liked a radius either side of the journal, maybe there is more to go, can't think a big end journal could be sized with a vernier gauge. also more care needed with protecting the crank end surfaces, these run oil seals must be good surfaces. Would have thought having the conrod present necessary to make this repair proper.

Cool to see the process but isn't the heat treatment all lost when he heats it to cherry red with a torch? I've never see anyone do this to machine steel. I also wonder if they'll re-balance it.
@rc-daily
@rc-daily 18 күн бұрын
They heated it like that to make it lose it's temper and be machined easier. Once it's all together they'll have it balanced and heat treated again. People make a huge deal over nothing...

All broken parts must have the same axis of rotation. It is next to impossible to be as accurate as required only by using eye inspection. Inaccuracies result in unusual stresses in the crackshaft while it is rotating inside an engine.

А мне кажется, что для таких мастеров какие-то отверстия не интересны. Да и без смазки прекрасно гарантийные 15 минут поработает! (But it seems to me that for such masters some holes are not interesting. Yes, even without lubrication it will work perfectly for 15 minutes!)

To start, cutting bits are not sharp, they are not at the proper cutting angle. The cutting chatter of the bit tells you that the speed and angle is wrong. Really, there is nothing right about this crankshaft repair. It's all wrong. No way is the stroke correct.

Look at the key way in the crank at the end of the vid. Waste of time, especially as filed finish on the journal and lack of lubrication will lead to failure in minutes.

No way the two end journals would run true. The weld for the big end is just a surface weld, useless really. I usually admire the efforts made with limited equipment and resources. But this effort was very poor.
