Thanks for the more detailed explanation of the mud cap. I guess for contractors; it's not generally something that needs to have a more in-depth explanation on many DIY videos. I'm working on a 70 bath & shower remodel with a new single handle replacing an old hot/cold with diverter.

Hi sir, Thanks for all the great videos. I'm doing this right now. If I understood correctly, if you happen to err, it should be placing the mixing valve a drop back from the finished wall rather then having it stick too far out. Is that correct? Thanks!!

I have shower 🚿 mixer which was install in my bathroom but it’s not turning off! It keep running water on either side of cold and hot water! When i examine, it shows that an the cold water side which located on the right hand side of the mixer is connected the hot water pipe that went outside to the hot water pump! On the left side which is originally hot water side, it have on the hot water pipe! On the upper middle pipe it have the shower 🚿 pipe! On the lower middle it have on the main pipe that came in from outside off the main line! Is every thing all okay with the setting up of the mixer? If not ok would it cause the valve from not able to lack off the water 🚿 from running constantly

What if you aren't using wall board and just a shower surround
@fee61533 жыл бұрын
Is the shower valve required to be secured to the framing? I see it sometimes in new construction from some builders, other times it is secured to the fiberglass shower wall. Those installs typically work loose pretty quickly. I thought fixtures and plumbing had to be attached to framing.
@garychambers59302 жыл бұрын
I attach mine Everytime but I have been remolding for 30 + years and I know exactly how deep it needs to be I have seen many DYI people that done attached them because they are worried about the depth I don't use the mud gard ether especially with Moen because it doesn't leave a lot of tile to cover with the trim scussion ring If your tile is a little bit off of the ring you can easily end up with a gap witch means ya have to replace a tile No one wants to tell a home owner " Oh sorry but I'll have to bust a tile off and replace it . " " So it'll be a couple more days before you can use the new shower 🚿 ."

Do you have to use this? We forget to install this and wondering if we need to redo the area of tile and backer to fit it in there? I'm sure this part has a purpose of some sort. If not I don't want to tear out the tile and start over
@StarrTile Жыл бұрын
I think I mentioned on the video that the pretty stuff meaning the plate and the valve handle and all that stuff may not fit if it's not spaced correctly, but if you've already put your tile up you can do a Dri-Fit to see if they work
@roberthelmick95745 жыл бұрын
20 years installing tile and shower valves. The simplest way to explain the correct depth of the shower valve would be to figure out the hight of the center point of the valve. Cut a 2x4 to the width between the 2 studs where the valve will go. Install it to the back of the studs with the center of the 2x4 at the height of the center point of the valve and screw it to the 2x4, plumb. I cannot think of any past shower valve that this method did not work on. I believe valves are built to be installed this way to deliver the finish product you want at the correct depths. Now in the event you have 2x6 framing and so on you will need to adjust for that. But on standard 2x4 framing this is how I always do it and I never have any issues. I'm sure someone will give their own opinion at some point, and if you can explain your point in a manner that might actually teach me something other than the fact that you know how to insult people, I'd love to learn something new.
@StarrTile5 жыл бұрын
Obviously I can't teach you anything new, nor would I try, this is my channel of my videos if you choose to watch then great and if you go away it doesn't matter to me.. But after the same 20 years of doing showers, I have run into a Moen, Delta, Price Pfister, and half a dozen others, your method would not work for every single one so there is no one set solution except to follow your mudguard which is what I talk about in here
@roberthelmick95745 жыл бұрын
@@StarrTile that responce is fair enough. I honestly didn't expect you to be the one who answered me. The question was more directed towards the know it alls that constantly appear in your video threads. I honestly respect you as an installer, I watch a lot of your videos and agree for the most part on your techniques. And what few things I may disagree on are more opinionated than anything. But I too have installed all the different name brands you just mentioned and this method always works for me. Now with each name brand I'm sure there is more than one design of valve that they make and this may be where you are seeing a difference. IDK. But in the event you ever run across a situation where what I suggested just wouldn't work. I'd like to see it somehow. Name of manufacturer and series name. I'm not asking you to make a special video just for me. But the information in a message would be great. Who knows, maybe that would save me from a mistake one day. Anyways thanks for the reply and just know that there are people out here who care as much as you do. We are not all "tail light warranty" tile men. Take care buddy.

What if the mud plate sticks out or is not flush after the tiling/grouting is complete? Will this be a problem when trying to affix the escutcheon or can this be easily adjusted by the plumber so that the final look is as desired?
@StarrTile3 жыл бұрын
It can only be adjusted if the anchoring of the valve is accessible. There is a little bit of playroom if it is too deep or sticks out a tad, but if it's too much it will not work
@Ranger422 жыл бұрын
How about if the shower walls will be Floated?
@MegaFaceboy2 жыл бұрын
So since you used a section of wallboard and tile to position the valve, but you still ended up 1/4” past the outer edge of the mudguard, does that man we should adjust the location of the valve 1/4” past flush with the section of tile board and tile to account for the thinset in the actual installation? Thanks and I appreciate what you do to help us.
@StarrTile2 жыл бұрын
There is a little wiggle room with those mud guards I'm going to say up to that quarter inch you were speaking of, but since I know what my wallboard tile and thinset will be I'm pretty much on point... though it would not hurt to go to the lower end of the mudguard rather than the outer end

Great video👍. What’s a good height for the temp valve and also a 3way diverter? I’m putting temp valve under the 3way diverter
@StarrTile2 жыл бұрын
I don't have a measurement to give you, I usually just put a around Belly level for the mixer and then the diverter would be about 8 or 12 above that

How do you set the valve if using prefab panels that stck out 2-2/2" from the drywall? Thanks
@StarrTile4 жыл бұрын
As a rule those type of showers have the pipes coming out of the floor and not the bottom plate, that way they already bumped out 2 or 3 in, the valve is installed and is basically floating, in other words it is not anchored to anything but the shower panel itself.
@jgrrr90474 жыл бұрын
@@StarrTile Thank you for the info. In my case, I have existing plumbing. How would you suggest I move it forward to work with this new shower kit that's going in? Thanks.
@woodlandsartgal Жыл бұрын
I need you to come to my state!!! My handyman did not use the madcap (also didn't use the right board, just sheetrock, yes, that had to come out). Expensive valve, expensive hardware, all new tile. And once finished the darn valve is 1" away from the tiles. Everything wiggles too, nothing was anchored. Fixtures are not lined up with drain, shower arm is crooked. A mess. First plumber i called to diagnose said I had to demo (all new material after a leak) and start from zero. Another said I need to access the wall from behind (a bedroom), anchor, move as needed, close wall, texture, and paint O.o Does that make sense? Can it be done right? What would you recommend? Valve and fixtures are Moen PosiTemp, trim is Align.
@StarrTile Жыл бұрын
The latter remedy is better than the former, and a good plumber can make that work, will save a lot of time and effort Busting Out tile from the front
@woodlandsartgal Жыл бұрын
@@StarrTile Thank you, I was hoping for a magical third option but I think we must break that wall. Did you do a video about anchoring? You describe it here, but I need to show something so there is less chances of error... that's what I did with shower pan and redguard, "like this screenshot, nope, screws must be covered, not on the side of the pan, just the joints is not enough, the whole wall, yes -like this" They hate you now, and I'm a Karen but I referred so many customers to your videos, you saved us.

Hello, is a mud cap/plastic guard even necessary? My shower never got one installed and now I’m replacing parts and the one I bought doesn’t fit because it butts against a wooden stud.
@StarrTile4 ай бұрын
Not a matter of it being necessary, since it serves not real purpose OTHER than knowing where your tile stops....but that's the rub, it lets you know where your tile stops. If you have a valve that lets you know that without the mudguard then of course you don't need it.
