Rob shows in a quick 4 minute video just how effective a standard bevel down bench plane is on hard Maple end grain. Properly sharpened, they will perform as well as any low angle version.
This is also our first video shout in 4K Ultra High Definition. Shot on a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

It looks like Wood River makes a great plane. However I have an old, small, ball peen hammer made by Wizard tools that is the only thing I have from my grandfather that has passed. Every time I pick it up I think of him. Since I plan on passing my tools down to my son, daughters and grandchilderen (those that I think will use them), I think it is worth the extra cost to buy something made in America or Canada (Nielsen or Veritas). After all, the things I make will be from this country and that is important. The legacy of a few tools is just as important as the quality in my opinion.

I bought the wood river 5 upon watching one of your videos. Used it all day yesterday, it's a fantastic piece of equipment, adjustment is so simple as you mention (although I frequently forget which way to turn the knob due to my novicery in the woodworking game). Still to get myself a 16,000 diamond stone...

I would argue that you can polish an edge just as fine or finer with a strop charged with chromium oxide after honing between 4k and 8k grit. The electron microscope images taken of edges sharpened on 1k then polished on a strop in "The Complete Guide to Sharpening" illustrate this point well.
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
What many people forget about using a strop is that you will lose your straight edge. Strops are great for knives and other cutting tools, but I want my plane blade to have a straight edge so I can get flat boards with square edges.
@Engineer-Machinist
@Engineer-Machinist 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobCosmanWoodworking I respect your opinion on this and would agree with you for power stropping. I just doubt that some passes on a piece of leather on a flat backing could take my plane our of square. Especially since it is squared up on my water stones before stropping every time. The material removal rates with hand stropping are just so small. I've been proven wrong before and will check my blade before and after stropping with a straight edge to make sure.

@RobCosman Wonderful video. How do recommend planing a large cookie slab of oak (or any other hardwood)? It's all end grain, of course. As this video demonstrates, a perfectly sharp plane is the necessary equipment. But what about technique for a cookie slab?

Rather that a bevel at the end could one clamp a piece of hardwood at the end? If so should the grain support be end grain up or grain parallel to the plane sole?

Hi Rob, I hear what you are saying about the quality of those plans next to its competition namely lie-Nielsen. I own four L/N planes which I love to bits but if I’m honest I purchased them because I had access to them here in Ireland through the Carpentry store in Naas (great store). If wood river had a retailer in Ireland or the UK I would seriously consider them for my next purchase. Great video as always Rob, I’m addicted to your videos

Rob I got a 5 and 1/2 wood river plane but I still blow out the end grain on oak with an edge sharp enought to shave ive set the frog set the chip breaker and the blade depth as close to perfect as I possibly can any idea what I'm missing or doing wrong
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 4 жыл бұрын
Timmy tex long horns sharpness of blade is important for the surface appearance and feel (if your blade has any knicks you’ll see it as lines on the end grain), but does not determine whether or not it will “blow out” on the end. That’s most likely a result of a failure to create a chamfer on the far side, or taking too heavy of a cut.

@10fullol

Rob's math on total angles is correct. Thinking about it further, if the material is hard, we cannot use small bevel angle. Or else the blade will chip pretty quickly.

Just because I am an engineer and we think about these things. Regarding the ruler trick in sharpening: In another video, you state that the ruler trick produces an angle of "about one degree." So I had to run the numbers myself. You also state in that video that your ruler is about 25 thousandths thick and I am assuming that your stone is about 4 inches wide. The angle this creates is the arctangent of 25 thousandths divided by 4, which equals 0.358 degrees. arctan(.025/4) = 0.358° So you were pretty close. Thanks for all your videos.

I'm curious how the chamfer prevents blowout. 45 degrees?
@DasAlbatross
@DasAlbatross 8 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Hanson Long unanswered question, but here goes. By putting a chamfer on the far edge you don't plane into the fibers on the edge of the wood. Those fibers would be unsupported and would likely tear out as the blade pushed them. By putting the chamfer there those edge fibers are below the surface being planed. You can also clamp some scrap to the end to support that edge if you don't want to chamfer it. Or use a shooting board.
@shawnwerner5935
@shawnwerner5935 3 жыл бұрын
It's not preventing it so much as containing it to the height of the chamfer, which it does by the method described by DasAlbatross.

@@RobCosmanWoodworking cheers !! I tried again today and at first the plane was just skating on top of the beech endgrain... then I readjusted the plane and pulled back the chip breaker a bit and for some reason it started cutting much better ... originally it wasnt TOO close to the edge but I pulled it back a bit more maybe now it's 2-3mm from the edge of the blade and it really made a difference ... still not taking full shavings like you are in the vid but getting there with the help of your videos , Thanks !!!

@@adamthewoodworker2571 yessss i finally got rob cosman type results !! I bought shapton stones but i left them in the box lool havent used them yet .... What did the trick was sharpening normally (primary bevel at 25deg with a rough method like a belt sander, then secondary bevel at 30deg with 1000 and then 2000-3000 sand paper ONLY USE A FEW STROKES, NO NEED TO SPEND A LOT HERE.... JUST 10-20 Back strokes on the 1000 and then 10-20 back strokes on the 2000-3000) .... Then what reaaaallll did the trick was STROPPING on just a piece of mdf with some regular hardware store metal polishing paste (autosol) ... Every few minutes of work i stop and i strop ... This keeps the edge reaaally fresh and it will reduce the number of sharpenings needed ... Ive gone weeks without sharpening just by honing every few minutes of work .... Also what helped is dont put the chip breaker too close to the edge like everyone says on youtube , i put it like 2-3mm from the edge and it seemed to help a lot. ... I put up a video on my facebook page a while ago planing 4/4 endgrain hard maple like butter with this method

Again with the 1/2 price comment. Wood River 5 1/2, typical price is $195. Veritas 5 1/4 ( they don't offer a 5 1/2) and LA Jack are $245, take your pick. What are you comparing the Wood River planes to when you're claiming they're half the price? 195 /245 = 79.5%
