Planting No-Till Winter Rye/Wrapping Sorghum Sudangrass/Straw Delivery

Trinity Dairy

Жыл бұрын

It's another first for Trinity Dairy. We decided we would like to plant winter rye again, but we didn't want to work up the sorghum sudangrass field we planted this Spring. We rented a Great Plains 1006NT Grain Drill from our nearby extension office. Our plan is to plant winter rye into the stubble. We finished wrapping the sorghum bales and then prepped the field with some fertilizer before planting. The next day, we had a straw delivery from our hay guy. We are sitting very well for winter with bedding and feed.

Trinity Dairy was established in 2006, in Minnesota. Alan and Jennifer farm with their 5 children; Jessica, Justin, Jordan, Joshua, and Jason. We milk a mix of 33 Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, and Ayrshire cattle. We also enjoy sharing our family's love of Draft Horses and using them for logging and other farm work. Dairy Farming in Minnesota can be challenging, but it's a lifestyle we really enjoy. Subscribe today to watch our small family dairy farm and family grow while continuing to thank our Lord for the blessings we've been given.

It's really neat that the extension agents have such a program. I will have to see if Wisconsin has anything similar. If not I'll look into just renting a machine if I could.

Every drill is a no-till drill if you're brave enough. Jokes aside, Im glad to see no-till taking off the rate it is, and a small grain drill capable of clearing corn stubble is a worthy investment. (ive been no-tilling for 3 decades now)

Those no-till drills worked great for seeding red clover every 5 or 6 years into my orchard grass grazing strips in my dairy farming days. I would seed all 55 acres with about 5 lbs per acre of good red clover seed. that was rated multi year. Since not all came up the first year and the % of ":hard seed" took even longer, every 5-6 years was perfect re-seeding. (I bought red clover that was rated for 3 years )......it cost more, but well worth the extra cost.

Alan & Jan: As I watch your videos, they remind me of a gentleman by the name of Jerry Apps who uploaded a video on KZfaq about 8 years ago titled "A Winter Farm Story". This video especially, reminds me of Mr. Apps because of your opening line - "We are sitting very well for winter with bedding and feed". I truly believe that the two of you would absolutely enjoy this video He walks his viewers through the four seasons when he was back on the farm during the depression and World War II. He is speaking of his life and his experiences growing up on the farm during that time period. He said that "everything that you do on the farm in the Spring, Summer and Fall, prepares you for the Winter. You have the same philosophy as Mr. Apps. I do hope that you and Jan are able to find a moment to watch the video. Watching your videos and seeing your devotion and love of farming, this video will absolutely touch your hearts. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful videos of life on the farm.

It would be nice to be able to rent one of those seed drills around here. I can't justify buying one for the small amount of land I seed. I was thinking it was too late to seed fall rye but now that I see you I may seed the turkey range.

Lots of Great Plains equipment here in the Texas panhandle. What’s your hay market look like up there. Right now grass hay is running about $100-150 for a 900-1200 lb round bale plus trucking. Drought and fuel costs driving the price sky high. What did those big squares run?
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy Жыл бұрын
Hay is pretty reasonable around here right now, this straw was a little pricey, but there are no top or bottom bales, and it's chopped pretty fine,in the bale, so I'm hoping to not need to chop it to use it in the barn. It was 180 a ton.
@chrisweigand4216
@chrisweigand4216 Жыл бұрын
Also how did you take the bales off of the wrapper? Did you spear them and tape the holes?
@trinitydairy
@trinitydairy Жыл бұрын
When the 3point hitch is lifted, the wrapper folds in the middle and the bale rolls off the back, then just pull ahead and wrap another one.

"October 25"........Isn't it very late in the fall to be seeding rye? The reason I ask is because I observed in my many years of farming that Armistice Day (Nov 11) is usually the last day I could plow due to frozen ground . Is 2 i/2 weeks before possible ground freezing too late ? I don't know so that is why I ask.
@trinitydairy

Not from what I've been told, I planted some last fall, just before the ground froze, it didn't do anything that fall, but it came up in the spring.
