Great vid! Potassium bitartrate (cream of tartar) is used in some commercial gypsum plaster retarders. It’s even listed as an appropriate retarder in some plaster manufacturers’ literature. Works like most acids for slowing the set- citric acid and vinegar are two other household chemicals that work similarly. A saturated solution of borax works really well though. You can add it to your mix water in any proportion you want to precisely delay the set time. Anything from one part solution to twelve parts of water (~15 minute delay) to one part solution to one part water (12 hour delay). Most retarders won’t effect strength in any way so long as your plaster doesn’t dry out before curing. Another class of retarders that work in another way include gelatin, hide glue, some plant products, etc- many of these types of retarders will increase the strength of the plaster 👍

Remember being 17 ...walls gone,splashing water with my big brush trying to bring it back to life, gear is set in the bucket...got told to go home...I was devastated...don't think the product would have saved me...experience is your best friend 🧡 👍

I used to use this on site before extra time, never let me down but I prefer extra time as it's consistent on timings

Also, in another great video you guide through the stages (which trowel and plastering step when)... Please make a video how to identify those stages and what to look for. Your guidance is supremely valuable. I have to plaster a home and just go semi-blindly, but there is no way I can afford a professional.

I used to use it while running in situ cornices in lime and plaster of Paris, the cream of tartar extended the normally very quick set of the gypsum by about three times. I noticed that the longer it took to set the harder the plaster became. I had one job that I overdosed that took 3 days to harden

i would love to see a video where you repair a wall, i saw the one with the mesh, but that was for an exterior and in a small area such as a bathroom, every mm reduces the amount of space after you do your waterproofing membrane, tile adhesive and thick tiles. How would you repair the cement render in a shower after you remove old ceramic tiles and it takes chunks of the render off with it exposing the brick, can i just fill in where the chunks come off and prep the wall with SBR and cement slurry?

This gypsum plaster mixture contains a large proportion of clay, which determines the color of the entire mixture. Only in GB used

Blaine please do somet videos on how to plaster thin wall stripes, like 10cm between doorframes. I have no idea how to do it and my results are always a mess. I tried with very think trowels same bad results

Ye Blaine used it yrs ago on a big kitchen think put too much in as didn’t set till 1.30 😳😂 & we prep all & on plasterboard so straight start at 7 .45 & was summer helped with the heat but not used again lol keep too extra time if u need I had a chat with mark who produces it clever chap 👍🏻

Off topic but do you pros take rads off the wall to skim behind? I'm a DIYer and will start tackling my house soon. I'm not sure skimming around rads feels right but taking them off seems like a faff if not necessary... And feedback is welcome!

I could do that 2 coats with 1 mix and no extra time, so with that you should be able to do with 1 big mix. That should be the whole point

Ive been using 2 handfuls of board adhesive per bag of multi to slow my mixes down. Works wonders.

I keep asking this question on KZfaq videos. Why is uk pkaster brown ? I live in Croatia and use mostly knauf products, but all plaster here is off white - white.

Only one plaster is white here, lime plaster, all modern plasters that are gypsum-based for internal application are pink/salmon coloured.

because this is what british people been taught using 100 years ago and they don't like changes and upgrades that's why you'll only see one type of plaster and everyone only using trowel. They didn't even hear about roll on plasters

The gypsum in the uk quarry where it’s been taking from is that colour. Skim coat in Ireland is grey and drys out pure white. Carlite finish in Northern Ireland comes in grey or that brown colour. Depends what quarry it’s taken from.

Thistle Bonding in the UK is sometimes pink and sometimes grey. The pink stuff is made from natural quarried gypsum. The grey stuff is made from desulphogypsum (bi product of flue gas desulphurisation process in coal fired power stations). I personally find the grey stuff less sticky and a bit more gritty than the natural stuff and I'm always slightly relieved when I open the bag and find it to be pink, with the reassuring aroma of cat wee (🐈🐱).

I've only ever used cream of tartar .never tried double time but presume it's the same thing just more expensive marketing

Plus I use 2 teaspoons per bag so you didn't put as much as I'd advise mate. Them sachets are shit and if needed I'd say you'd use 2 per bag that would roughly equat to 2 teaspoons per bag. Just my 10p worth
