For anyone wondering, just put the gamepad in another room until it gives up trying to reconnect. There, I just saved you 5 boobless minutes.

I know this is an old video, but this only works for a few Wii U games. Many will refuse to load up if the Gamepad is not present, and some will actually turn the Gamepad on remotely if it's within range. Thing is, most Wii U games have features that take advantage of the touch screen or microphone and therefore will not be playable without the Gamepad.

Thanks for the help. I spent 30 minutes working the settings on the Gamepad trying to disable it. I was so frustrated that you can't do that without taking the Gamepad out of the room. That's ridiculous!!!

I never use my gamepad when i play mario kart 8,havent turned it on in well over a year,i thought this was common knowledge,you only need it for games that require it.

When going through that process with a dead gamepad (charger broken, replacement pending), it says it can't turn display off unless it can communicate with the pad. Is there a work-around for this? I'm just wanna watch netflix and it can't find it in the shop when I'm in under the regular wii menu.

I wish the Wii U had a lite version that did not need the gamepad at all, and would just load the system menu like the wii without the miiverse. It would be even better if it was a top loader like PS1 or Dreamcast and you just click a power button and BAM the game is loading up. I would buy one then. I just want a console to play Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 on, and as it is at the moment I'm just not interested in it.

I tried this intuitive trick many times to play with a Wii U pro wireless controller at Sonic Lost World and lately at Sonic Boom but it NEVER worked! Both games support pro controller ONLY for cooperative gaming, then a single player MUST play with the gamepad NECESSARILY, which is annoying because the gamepad is obviously quite heavy and big, hence uncomfortable and often the display is kinda useless (it shows the same exact picture of the tv, just way blurrier). In Fact both games don't go over the main screen using that trick, because they NEED the gamepad connection/synchronization. In the past with the Wii I used the trick to disconnect the nunchuck once the message telling it was required disappeared after the system recognized the nunchuck was connected and make the game start in order to play the Resident Evil adventures (not the rail shooters) replacing the nunchuck on the fly with the Wii classic controller pro and it does work, but with Wii U gamepad NO WAY.

Many games don't need game pad. all wii games can be played with wii mote, sensor bar. Some great games like lego city undercover, splatoon, zelda breath, only play with ganepad

The only problem is that few Wiiu games use the Remote. At least, I can use the console, afterall, once i intent to buy on without gamepad (which is cheaper).

Why not temporarily remove the battery from the game pad? Aside from having to unscrew the battery panel, I mean? See I live in a small apartment and almost every room does have reception for the game pad. No dead spots.

You need the Wii U Gamepad to set the Internet connection whenever a system update is required. I had bought the Wii U without gamepad and even though I have Wii remotes i'm now helplessly unable to play Mario Kart 8 because it always requires system update... and i can't override it

You NEARLY had me believing in this...especially when you said that you can play 'ALL' of your WiiU games without the gamepad....but I sure can't play Lego Batman without it...because the game won't start unless I press the + button on my WiiU gamepad.... nice try though. ;)
