same here, granted i'm happy with 30fps it's playable, what really bothers me is inconsistent frame rate, but i would give up a bit of resolution for 60fps anyways

Pemphro. 4k TV's in the future will get cheaper and allow all people to own them. Right now it is not viable to seek out 4k due to its irrelevance to gamers (might change in a year or two). 1440p can then be a small factor for those who have 4k TV's, while 1080p 60fps would be the main selling point of the PS4 Pro (my ideal projection of what the console should have been).

anticomuna That's the thing for me too, it's just stupid. Games like Until Dawn drop into the teens on PS4 but Pro would be able to run it at the target 30fps which would be a big improvement. I only use my console for exclusives but if they all ran better out of the gate I would have upgraded.

Nonsense the whole purpose of PS4 pro is better graphics. If you let one game have better perfomance on the Pro than the base you give the pro games an advantage and basically say f.. you to the PS4 gamers. Not so costumer friendly is it? But we know that Microsoft has often enough shown that they don't give a shit about costumers. I mean ok if the power is used to hit the target better like, if both games are supposed to be 60 fps and PS4 base drops sometimes to ~55fps. You could use the Pro power to hold it little more stable at 60fps. Also some games in offline mode can have higher fps that is also not any of a big issue. But the moment it get's to online gaming the fps need to be clocked the same. Otherwise pro gamers will have an advantage and it would build a 2 class community.

Unlocked framerates aren't always a good idea without some sort of adaptive sync technology (even then frame time variance can't be too high between individual frames).

VexX bc they are people out there who will make the comparison regardless plus to know if a product is well worth your money comparisons need to be noted sadly; by paper specs Pro ain't that impressive now it is what you do with the software to enhance up to the developers not really Sony & price point on the their business side of things, it's very smart if you look at it from that point of view, I'll say go read Cerny interview about it & Scorpio is supposed to be 8 teraflops based on the leak information & now that Sony came out 1st will give Microsoft the upper hand to build a better system that they originally intended yet Sony can use this as test run to enhance their systems I'll wait a year I imagine by then 4k should be better work out with both systems out as of now these seems to be going in the right direction; 4k cost effective for now.

4k isn't that difficult. Since the GPU only has to render a higher resolution, which might come at the cost of lower details/shadows/etc. It only stresses the GPU more. However, the min-fps are a complete different story. Without a better CPU, you won't hit them. If the CPU isn't fast enough to render 60 fps in a certain Game, then you won't get smooth 60 fps. Maintaining 30 fps is MUCH easier for the CPU than 60 fps. Just like on the PC; maintaining 144 fps for example is much easier for an i7, than it is on an i5.

isn't that difficult?, i cant even play at 60 frames in rise of the tomb rider or crysis 3 at 1080p with all maxed out with an r9 390x, only titan x pascal can archieve 60 frames at 4k with some graphics settings turned to medium, ohh, and it cost 1200 USD....

westbrighton I think the manufacturers are not getting it right with current gen, yet they are trying to evolve again! PS4 and Xbone both need to be hitting native 1080p at 60fps consistently. This is not too much to ask, and should be the standard we play at. Once they have that sorted, then you can start looking at 4k. They are trying to fly before they can even hover or float.

In fact as soon as you move from 1080p to 4k the main bottleneck is not the CPU, but the GPU, as it's been shown in many CPU/GPU benchmarks.

the switch runs at a lower clock when on handheld mode to save battery and avoid heat, so it will probably switch to 1080p when on tv

Not it absolutely isn't. The Gamecube has a 9 GFLOPS GPU, the Switch will have something at ~1000 GFLOPS. The switch is 100x more powerful than a Gamecube. The PS4 Pro is 2x more powerful than a PS4.

dont expect much better performance at any resolution as the PS4pro from my research is just overclocked now which isnt a 100% gain in performance meaning in already highly demanding games at best the frame-rate may improve 5-10 fps without graphical changes to the game itself. It has to actively change the resolution on the fly to maintain the frame-rate that is disgraceful behaviour. the console is bottleneck by its CPU architecture (bobcat cores) jaguar while housing a 7850 worth of performance. In comparison my FX 8120 and R9 380X have no bottlenecks

Sony should have concentrated in the 1080p and 60fps benefits while also improving textures and details. The 4k stuff is still too early for consoles imo. I'm getting a Pro because it'll be my first PS4 but I wish they had targeted non 4k as that is what most people have.

Its rocking an APU with bobcat cores and a 7850 this means unless they tone back the future games LOD, and the rest well dont expect to be seeing native 1080p 60 fps in the future the console already proves it cant do it, by its use of switching the res on the fly something the 360 did with HALO 3 and Reach to keep it at 30 fps.

Great Review! Can't wait to get my Pro. Playing those exclusives in HD or 4k will be awesome. Gaming on PC with my GTX 1080 is great for modding, but with so many optimization problems lately, its nice to have a console that will match the performance I got from my previous GTX 970.

Jojo werty I'm still using my PS3 fat. Next gen gaming has become pathetic with all the nickel and diming tactics and patching. PC gaming has also been retarded as well with constant patches, poor ports, and needs for constant tower upgrades. PS3 fat in my opinion will, go down as one of the best well rounded pieces of consumer electronics for gaming and audio/video use. It ushered in the hi-def format of bluray, is backwards compatible, and various memory options, and great codecs for sound quality for those with good A//V receivers.

Not only, Ni-oH has 4k-30fps/1080-60fps modes on Pro. NBA2K, Pro Evolution and Bound are all native 4K 60 though there's enhancements for this one in VR.

Ni-Oh started as a first gen ps3 game (still looks like a ps3 game), Bound doesn't have much going on technically (has a great aesthetic though). As for NBA and PES being 4k/60fps, pretty impressive if they pull it off.

If you paused on the birds in Tomb Raider it looked like they were blurs on the Pro. But for a 400 dollar box, not knocking it, it's impressively close to the native PC render, with most of the difference being texture settings.

Yup, I've even noticed the downscale super sampling on the Xbox One S on a regular 1080p screen. Cleans things up very nicely, just as this does. Also with just a regular Xbox 1/PS4, if you have the right TV. The TV itself will do upscaling that looks in many cases, better. The only thing I like about the Ps4 Pro is that you can choose (on some games), between 30fps locked, or just unlocked. Which is great. And pretty much one of the only reasons for the beefier GPU, as he says. But then again, a lot of people have had issues with the Pro NOT working on certain Vizio/Lg 4K TV's, at all. And even some cheaper Sanyo and RCA sets have had issues. So they still need to work out the bugs. But I think both companies have made good attempts here.

My 4K TV did a great job of upscaling my ps4 slims image. It brought out so many more details, plus the HDR 😊. I was playing on a 720p LG monitor 😭. I thought the LG looked good until I plugged my ps4 slim into my new 4K TV 😅.

a) How the game renders internally is up to the developer. There are already games out rendering natively at 4k and more to come. b) (And more importantly) the machine was never sold as rendering every game natively at 4k (they even openly explained the checkerboard technique at the press conference as one of the options to hit 4k on top of native and upscaling). However the machine DOES, in fact, output at 4k, which is what it is being sold as doing. So unless you are saying it should be illegal to state a fact then your point is moot.

FunnyMontagesGR it was... There still somewhat alive with Nintendo and some exclusives that eventually came on PS4 and Xbox One but I still think that the PS4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio are unnecessary. I would like better if they waited 2 more years and relase the PS5 or Xbox whatever, with good game optimization the PS4 and Xbox One can resist during that time without problems.

the irony is the console gamers are all hypocrites with their "you need to change the graphics settings, i merely put my disc in and play" nonsense. I wish that 1080p users would understand that they will get a "4K clarity" on their TVs too, thanks to the super sampling. As the supersampling is "free" for the devs, they can create high fidelity graphics with a 970GTX in mind without worrying about jaggies and resolution. When you think about that the Pro is amazing... and its $400!

You said that YUV420 is for older less equipped screens but also for HDR which would imply the latest screens. You said that YUV420 supports HDR at 10bit but I've read that the downside of YUV420 is that it can't support HDR, 10bit and 60fps so when said it would be at 30HZ is that what determines the fps? I have a top end 4K TV (ks8000) which fully supports HDCP2.2, 10bit, HDR10/1000 (whatever you want to call it) and 4K of course (quantum dot). I currently have (the TV set up correctly and) the PS4 set to YUV420, HDR, 60HZ and HDCP2.2 all supported. So am I right in saying that I'm getting HDR at 60fps but only 8bit color? Because it sounds as if YUV420 can't run 60fps at 10bit as well as having HDR right? If I set it to RGB it still shows up as HDR fully supported, 60HZ and HDCP2.2. And from what I understand RGB can send 10bit color at 60fps but not HDR too due to limited HDMI bandwidth. So if I choose RGB it would be the HDR that I lose through the HDMI cable? For a fully supported 4K screen which setting gives you what? What are you trading off if you choose one over the other and is it possible to get HDR at 10bit color and 60fps? If so what bandwidth HDMI cable would I need? And lastly I have VR which doesn't support HDR so RGB would be the best choice when using VR correct? If you (or anyone who knows for sure) are able to answer these questions it would be amazing and I'm sure would answer similar questions for lots of other people :)

I'd love to see you guys do a "setup" video going through the HDMI specs (HDCP 2.2 / HDMI 2.0a) and HDR display technology (8bit/10bit/12bit) to help average users determine what is necessary and what is superfluous to getting the most from their PS4 Pro and eventually Scorpio. This is an area in dire need of clarification. Maybe even throw up some demo test videos on your Patreon site to help.

That would mean nearly double the die size 3 years ago, this was enabled by shrinking fab processes. Double the die size of one of the largest APUs out there was obviously out of the question.

tipoomaster The result is the same, a PC built within the PS4 budget around the time the PS4 was released and beating it in most games, the PC in cost terms has come along way over the last few years that console gaming is expensive in comparison when you take into account online subs and cost of games. More impressive is that it's running the latest games with better results than the PS4, something consoles gamers thought wasn't possible because of optimisations on console, in the end, it's all about beating the myths and if after that someone still prefers consoles then thats fine but the PC is better in almost every way apart from ease of use.

Paul Aiello You're not responding to what I said. A 400 dollar PC in 2013 offered double the PS4s performance? Because you said the Pro is the PS4 that should have released in 2013. That would mean double the performance and double the die size in 2013. I've built PCs for decades and often say they're not much more expensive than consoles if you build them to nearly the same spec, but you're going to have to prove that claim to me, as it's even more extreme than I'd go in praise of PCs. An updated 2016 potato masher may come close, but your original comment was the PS4 Pro is what the PS4 should have been in 2013. I'd suggest looking up interposer size limits. The PS4s APU on 28nm in 2013 was right up against the interposer size limit, so casually suggesting this doubling of transistor budget is what should have happened in 2013 is being blind to that.

Fair enough it likely wouldn't of been a apu and would of cost probably $100 to $150 more but then PS4 owners wouldn't need to upgrade for better now, also, I never suggested they go for a apu but go with dedicated cpu and gpu, , it would cost more but you would get more performance. In any case, the result is the same, a PC that cost similar to the PS4 around the time of release and that PC beating it with countless games even newer ones today and by seeing some of his youtube clips, it's clear as daylight where that PC has the edge over the PS4, the cpu isn't holding it back where it is with the PS4, the same might be the case with the PS4 Pro being that the cpu is only around 30% better.

For a non-biased perspective on PS4 Pro, I always go to Digital Foundry. Great videos!! It's unfortunate that non-patched games don't gain a slight improvement, but it makes sense; it's just how a console environment works. I guess we have to rely on developers to send out patches to their games. Otherwise, I really want to get this console sometime in the future, as well as the Scorpio!

The framerate will get a little bit better but not by much because the cpu is not powerful enough. Believe me, i have an i5 4690 and battlefield 1 drops like a bitch with my 470 when shit happens. And my cpu is much more powerful than the ps4 pro one. Battlefield 1 needs i7s to get a solid framerate and i'm not joking

I'm still slowly coming to grips with 4K HDR televisions. I do have a few questions though. if the Pro is upscaling to 4k and handling the HDR, then what mode does the TV have to be in make sure that the 4K HDR signals are being displayed? Should you let the Pro handle the upscaling or the television? Or do you let the the Pro do 1080 and HDR and then let the television handle the upscaling? I'm planning on buying the Samsung UN65KS8000. from everything I read there are obviously different modes for the PlayStation 4 Pro and for the televisions. How do you get the best of both worlds? Is it even possible?

they have boost mode for that now, you enable it on console settings, and the cpu wil run at higher clock on all games. then all the old games will run faster, considering it is a cpu-bound game, and that the game originally had any frame drops. if tha game already stays at the fps-cap all the time withuout drops, then it wont make a difference. that also helps with games that had dynamic resolution scaling, in this case it should help the game stay at a higher res.

He never said PS4's checkerboard rendering is native 4k. You seriously need to pay more attention. He is saying some games, like Skyrim Special Edition, runs at a full 4k native resolution and if you're using a 1080p screen it is native 4k supersampled to 1080p. Nothing to do with checkerboard, which he was talking about for other games that run at either native 1080p or 1440p, rendered to 4k using checkerboarding. Did you really have that much trouble understanding the video or are you one of those Xbox fanboys?

Deathshiro That's not true at all. Uncharted 4's multiplayer mode, for example, plays at a solid 1080p60 on the PS4 Pro, unlike the 900p60 from the base PS4, which frequently dipped below the 60fps target. What won't be changed are the target frame-rates in the multiplayer modes, so if a game runs with a target frame-rate of 30fps on the base hardware, the best you'll see is more consistency. But, since Battlefield 1 has a target frame-rate of 60fps, it is quite plausible that the frame-rate will be far more consistent.

I don't see why it wouldn't. It currently targets 60, but does drop. So them making it a stable 60 wouldn't go against them saying about changing Online frame rate. Although with no news, everything is speculation.

I did not say change. I'm aware it will be 60 on both the base and the PRO. The thing is the base PS4 dips alot down to the 50s 45s etc... Just that it will make it a more stable 60. Not higher than 60 I know that already. With the extra hardware you would hope it becomes a little more stable

The problem is: xbox one s cpu runs the exacly same code as original xbox one, PS4pro run in a different code, if they give free boost in performance, will begin to appear several bugs in the games that before did not happen, is no a easy task.

What? Unpatched games are the same code, on the same base processor. I don't see how you're saying it's different than the XBO-XBO Slim, running the same game code on either version. It's patched games that would have diverging binaries.

tipoomaster The "code" i mean is this : work like SLI. If you try to force SLI in a game that doesn't support it, then you will get huge graphical glitches. This might be why they need a patch for the game to run with the full power, and why it's not possible to force extra power into the game, Basically has a common PS4 inside the PS4pro, they have update with the patch to use the second GPU that gives the extra power to the PS4 pro.

YourSoul We're not talking about enabling the extra GPU hardware though, just keeping the regular PS4s hardware level (compute units) on, but higher clocked, just like the XBO Slim does. Nothing like trying to force SLI.

Waittttt so it technically "can't" play a perfect 1080p 60fps STILL? (ex. 5:57) But it doesn't even have a heavy api or OS on top of it.... Isn't the PS4 Pro dual GPU now? I'm shocked. Anyways, good video Richard! Love the content

Yes it can play games at 60fps at 1080p, if it wanted to. Pay more attention to the video. Sony have basically chosen for most games **already released** to disable one of the GPUs and use just one, at the regular clock speed of the old PS4. This is to have better compatibility so there aren't any issues running the game incase the developer/publisher chooses to not patch the game. Games don't magically run better with dual GPUs you literally have to write code in the game to support it properly as any PC gamer will tell you who can afford two graphics cards. Most newer games coming out should support 1080p 60fps like Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The CPU is the main Achilles heel of the 8th gen console (both launch and 8.5 versions) You will not get consistent 60 fps on consoles this generation. I would seriously recommend that you move over to pc this generation if you want consistent high frame rates.

I even linked the example in my comment. Both games showcased in that example are running in "performance mode" on the Pro (1080p, 60fps, both gpu's running) and both games are optimized for the pro, ie; got a software patch. As you see in the tomb raider side by side, locked 30 on the normal ps4, unlocked 55-60 on pro. My question being, why is it not SOLID. Same with Infamous. I just figured it would be more powerful if they really want to market it as a solid upgrade over a normal ps4. Maybe devs are more focused on the "4k" at the moment. --No need to get butthurt, it was just a question/comment. (i like all aspects of gaming, pc, consoles, handheld, not bias whatsoever.) I come to this channel to learn. Simple. -Brandon Casey, I 100% agree. I feel the CPUs have been holding them back a bit. Nice to see the XB1S got a slight boost in clock. Maybe Playstation/Sony are waiting for the new Zen platform to utilize. (Hopefully :)

Hello Richard, i have a 4k hdr tv (samsung ju7500) and just got the ps4 pro, picture looks amazing with automatic setting on both resolution and HDR. But my question is, does these settings affects in any way gaming input lag? I find some difference in multiplayer gaming or is it just me getting use to the new resolution?

Mordecai R my phone is capable of playing 4k games.. you're truly mistaken if you're expecting to play the likes of battlefield 1 at 4k native.. you'll just get up scaled and low gpu intensive indie games... when it takes a $800 gpu in a pc to do it you won't get the same experience from a $400 console..

That high-end native 4K PC will cost a couple grand and the difference is VERY SMALL. You can't build a PC that matches the PS4 Pro at $400 this is a fact.

Children's parents will find it hard to afford the Scorprio, so they will mostly stick with an XBox 1 S or PS4. Those who can afford a Scorpio will be better off buying a gaming PC, and play the MS exclusives on Windows.

I'm on the fence with getting a console, As a PC gamer I haven't owned a console since the PS2 and this gen's issue for me has been the poor frame rates. My current front room TV's only 720p so I'm more interested in the frame rate improvement than anything else although if I do buy a Pro I'm also going to buy a newer 1080p TV. Good video but I'm still on the fence :(

Michiel Appeldoorn - You can plug a USB mouse and keyboard into a PS4 no problem, game developers just aren't supporting it for games, aside from some such as the people behind War Thunder.
