I tried to get it 15’ wide that year. For the Northwoods whitetail blend, I’d go a little wider in the future to get a better screening effect. But the fridged forage was plenty wide

Yes; I would. I planted about 10’ wide but if I did it again, I would do at least 20’ wide going forward. Great stuff but fewer stalks as you noticed. Thanks for watching!

Yeah some of mine I planted too early but most of it turned out ok. This is my first year planting it and I intend on planting in the same spots next year. I think when you hit it with 19-19-19 you are replacing the needed nutrients for it to grow well again year after year. Now I need to figure out how to get rid of the stuff in the spring… more to come!

@@northernforestwhitetail .. I smash it down and use my home built drag and it pulls the stalks right out of the ground if the soil is moist. Seems to work pretty good

We recommend moving the screen after two years in a row

I planted mine about 15’ wide. As you can see in the video that’s not wide enough. I would do minimum 25’ wide or wider if possible

I did have weeds yes. I did not use a pre emergent. I am doing all my food plotting herbicide-free and it definitely presents it challenges. However; with that said, I did find that I knocked the weeds back pretty good on one part of my plot screen by planting my one section later in the spring. My first section I planted in late May. That area got taken over by weeds pretty bad (I made a video on it called “plot screen fail”). Then in a different area, I planted my Frigid Forage plot screen on June 10th. That area did much much better weed-wise. Plus the plot screen plants got just as tall, even when planted later. Hope that helps. Good luck this spring!

@@northernforestwhitetail I love that you are going the herbicide free route. This is the way I want to go (just started this past year with a kill plot) and it presents so many challenges. I want to do switchgrass, but it appears herbicide free is extremely difficult / not advised at all for it. (RC Big Rock)

@@ten5039 yeah it certainly has its challenges. I haven’t attempted switchgrass yet but due to the longer establishment period, I could see that being especially difficult. One idea to consider instead of switchgrass would be a combination of plot screen, plus small conifer trees. I’m planting young conifers now, then also supplementing with plot screen for the next 6-8 years or so. After that amount of time, I should be able to stop planting plot screen as the conifers will be tall enough. Just an idea. Good luck!

No I would do the same seed rate (as shown on the label) but what I would change is how wide my plot screen band is. I would do a minimum of 20’ wide stand of the Northwoods blend just to offer a better screen. Wider is better with that one.

If you go slightly heavier seed rate it will cut down the height a bit but when you’re talking 18-20 feet tall you can spare some height. I actually prefer it around 7-8 feet tall and thick as possible…I would also say planting before the last week of June in the NE is a bit early…

No I didn’t spray. I use mechanical tillage for my weed control. Planting a little later when soil temps are 60 or above is key. That way the plot screen outpaces any weeds or grass

Neither- that was the idea behind plot screen too. You don’t want the deer eating it and spending time in it. I didn’t notice any real browse on either blend.

Are you referring to the Northwoods Whitetail blend? Their website says they don’t use the sorghums that deer want to eat. The FF blend has a handful of different sorghums in it.

After filming this video I wish I would have touched on that. The frigid forage blend definitely has its place. In fact I plan to plant more next year due to how thick and dense it is. Both blends offer different value depending on what you are looking for. For me, having a thick barrier or wall is very important. Thanks for sharing

I liked the height and strength of the plants with the Northwoods Whitetail blend, however, I don’t want to discount the fact that the Frigid Forage blend has appeal in how thick it was. I could see a time and place for both. I also would plant the Northwoods Whitetail screen thicker next time
