Today, we take Mill Brook locomotive 18, a Plum Cove Studios Generic Electric, completely apart for some much needed repair and maintenance.
Certainly not my best video editing work. I had some behind the scenes technical issues preventing me from editing this the way I wanted. Hopefully you find it interesting enough until I upload the next one.

I'm glad to see that you're going to replace both motors, especially with all the trouble you went through getting them out. Replace one, then 4 months down the road the other one craps out. Replacing both is what this airplane mechanic would do. 👌

Amazing what people can do with old mobility scooter parts. You really should look into the mobility scooter parts instead of being price gouged by the OEM and shipping costs. Lots of these trains literally use the same motors and other parts as mobility scooters and if you look around you will find people giving these things away free or for dirt cheap. It may be worth it to create your own stockpile of replacement parts on site in your shop. I would consider upgrading the motors to 24 volts though, they are more efficient than 12 volt motors and will give you more torque as well. Also you dont need a full blown Arduino Uno either, a nano will suffice or even and ESP 8266 module which accepts arduino code and has wifi connectivity built in I would recommend ESP-12e or higher to keep things simple though in the way of loading code up and not having to fiddle with FTDI UART boards that may or may not even work. the 12e and many others onwards use a simple USB connection since they are built onto a breakout PCB.

Why not replace the motors with mobility scooter motors? The short answer: it's complicated. I have a shelf full of them and they're all different. The motors that come in electric wheelchairs are mostly worm gear motors that don't allow the vehicle to coast down a grade -a very bad thing for a wheelchair, but a very good thing for a locomotive. Single motor scooters are better suited for locomotives and if they would fit, I might use a couple in this locomotive. Unfortunately, the ones I have do not fit. So, I figured I'd reach out to the manufacturer, who just happens to be the former owner of this locomotive before he bought the company that makes them.

Okay, I'm not sure who I'm talking to....the fella who is making all these great videos, but I have a suggestion. Maybe you could either do a video or put this on your FB page, can you properly introduce yourself to all 5.75 thousand of us who are following you. Tell us who you are, what your role is at the mill Brook RR. Tell us how long you have been with MBRR, and some history of the RR. It's obviously been around a long time. Is it still a working facility? The FB page says it makes and repairs trains but you are the only activity we have seen and the property seems a little, shall we say forlorn. Oh, and the shop, we would be interested in seeing your under construction shop in more detail. You have something amazing going on there, share, share, share.

Good suggestions. It is pretty much a one man operation and there are other railways I help out on regularly that you'll see on the channel, such as the Shady Pines Railroad and the Stoddard Hill Farm Railway. ...and I wouldn't be so generous as to call the state of my property forlorn. It looks like a dump, but much less of a dump than it was when I got the property 8 years ago. There's still a lot to do and the railroad has had a role in the cleanup since the first sections of track were laid, which was before I owned the property. More details coming when I put together a video on the origin of the MLBK. There's a lot more happening here than I've covered and there are improvements coming.

Very impressed with Board Wire Layout and Buss scheme for troubleshooting. Whenever I do wiring I like neatness when possible....like anything else, things wear out n or break...... U said some rust on Rod Ends? A little WD 40 would punt out that moisture buildup?

I can't say that 2G for one of these introductory engines could be considered affordable.

When you get to this size, it's more like a piece of lawn and garden equipment than a model train. Fewer people collect locomotives and rolling stock. They buy them to run them and they last for decades.

@@MillBrookRailroad I've dreamed of having this scale railroad in my yard since I was like 8yo but the cost! A nice SD45 costs more than my SUV I bought a month ago. Kits for steam engines that still require a full machine shop to make cost more than my house (I got a good deal on my house) This day and age it should be easy and cheap to get into! A 12v electric scooter motor and battery pack or something. But a box that looks nothing like any train I've ever seen for 2G... nope. I will end up making something from scratch, no way in hell I'm spending the kind of money some of these guys want. I'll end up 3D printing most of it.

I saw small rock pop out of the first motor that had a glitch, spere & pinion gears do NOT like small rocks !! The chain drive is better !!!
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 жыл бұрын
Well, I agree. Chain drive is better. This loco , however, was built with gears instead of sprockets and chain.

You have had it 8 years.. And it's actually 12 now... And finally getting it's first maintaince check up? And every time you turn those gears is like running your nails down a chalkboard makes me want to puke.. The poor thing!.. Have you heard of grease or gear oil? Thank god you don't own a live steamer!.. How about spray on metal preservative for winter storage, stuck in a shed with mass temp changes and heavy condensation, accompanied by rust and corrosion? I hope you mantain and change the oil in your car more than every 8 years?.... Just saying.....
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 жыл бұрын
This was not its first maintenance check up. It was its first tear-down. And the way I store it is no different than the way most steamers are stored at the live steam clubs. It's not a steam engine. It's a battery electric spare helper with no gease points.
