Good review which seems fair to me. I have an M3P, but if for some reason I had to pick a different EV it would be the Polestar 2, so well done to polestar for putting together at least a sensible alternative to Tesla. The more credible EVs there are, the better for all of us.

I have a M3P. No reliability issues at all. Interior is a breath of fresh air and relaxing. The looks are the result of a low drag coefficient. It looks more like a sports car than the polestar, to me. Very happy with mine.

I must admit, I prefer the design of the Polestar, inside and outside! It's a good looking car.

I’ve ordered the PS2, fits us perfectly. I live far north in Norway, drive 99% on charging from my house. We have alot of darkness in the fall and winter, which means the headlights will be in use alot. The Pixel lights should be a clear winner in that regard for the PS2, and headlightwashers are only one car who has and its the PS2. Tow hitch and can pull 1500kg, forged wheels (and an option to use 3rd party wheels without losing warranty), no panelgaps, no ugly aero wheels, 360’ camera, more than one screen, electric tailgate, greater quality on the paintwork (Volvo paint>Tesla), looks alot better IMO, frameless mirrors look fantastic. The list is long for why I chose the Polestar over a Tesla. But the Tesla was never considered because of the bad quality on the build and paintwork.

What about design philosophy? Sustainable materials, driver engagement, safety, aesthetics, and practicality?

Very fair comparison. I think the fact the polestar 2 even comes close to the TM3 is praiseworthy. No-one can beat Tesla’s charging network, so if you want that, theres no discussion left. Personally, I would pick the PS2 because I think it’s a beautifully designed, premium looking beast of a car, sure it doesn’t do as much or go quite as far, or as fast, but it’s still plenty for me.

Model 3 is the car for the tech enthousiast to buy. Who likes tech features and welcomes a product which isn’t finished but is improving like software. Polestar 2 is the car for the traditional carbuyer who values thinks like quality, dealership relationships and conventional things like buttons and a driver display. You can’t go wrong which ever you pick in my opinion.

I really like the Polestar's interior. The problem with Tesla's interiors is that they are so minimalist that they feel unfinished or incomplete.

I don't understand the remark against Tesla's steering and mirror regulations. First, they are usually a one-time only setup, maybe with a couple of tweaks in the first hours/days of use. So it's pretty irrelevant if the controls are immediately available or behind a menu or two. Plus the steering adjust for the PS2 is manual, while the Tesla can save it in the driver profile, which is super handy if the car is driven by more than one person (which is often the case). Here Tesla have definitely the better solution. As it often happens, this is very evident for a regular user of the car, and less to a reviewer/tester that goes from one car to another, maybe.

Been watching reviews of the Polestar 2 for the past few days and almost every reviewer a year ago said they would prefer the M3. But then this year post another video saying they changed their mind and much prefer the Polestar 2. Guess the OTA updates really helped it out this year. But for me, Polestar 2, just looks more fun and less hassle. And those pixel headlights, wow, amazing for night driving.

Since when are manual steering wheel controls better than electric with memory? In Tesla steering wheel position gets saved into your profile. If the car is driven by more than one person this means it will automatically restore your proffered position even when some other driver (say your wife) changed its position. I won't go into 'easy entry' that automatically moves steering wheel and seat position so it is easier to get in and out.

Great to see a new EV on the road!, but the PS2 is almost 300kg heavier than the Tesla which will have a negative effect on range etc. The key factor though is the Tesla Supercharger Network which is a game changer!

Also, a manual adjust for a steering column (in a $50k+ car no less) means no steering column memory and no easy entry mode. I don't recall the last time I saw a car in this price range without a power adjustable steering column.

I have a 3 and one thing it seems most of the reviewers don't get, is the voice commands. You say everything has to be done though the one screen, but most of my interactions with the cars controls are with voice commands.

Ordered a Polestar last week as have 4 of my colleagues. We all went PS2 simply because the lease rates on Tesla are so much higher here in the UK. For us the T3LR was £150 / month more! That makes the Tesla way off budget. I’m not a big fan of Tesla’s “minimalist” interior or it’s quirky exterior but still would have had one because of its performance and charging network. However at the end of the day, the Tesla with an almost identical window price have obviously not worked out a deal with the lease companies. That to me is a major oversight.

Not everything is about how fast it accelerates ! Most people buying these kinda cars are not going to be drag racing them down the motorways. The Polestar makes more sense, its cheaper, has better quality inside -(where it really needs to be of better quality) had a proper drivers display. Not every little thing controlled through 500 submenus, such as a way to just to open a glove box or temp control ?? old school adjustments will be more user friendly to most drivers.

TBH the difference in headroom at 4:38 doesn't seem that much. But how steep are your upper lefs in the Model 3?

When do you people stop putting similar evs against each other, like real compatators? Start putting them against cars that they are really taking market shares. ICE cars like the bmw 3 series look very bad against either of the cars in the video.

Went P2 Hatchback - for doggo Towbar - for trailer which is braked. 3 years servicing (at any Volvo dealer), 3 years breakdown cover, 3 year warranty (battery 8 years). Plus if I take it to my local Volvo dealer I get a courtesy car and they pick mine up. Volvo quality with more car like interior design. Though, the Tesla LR and Performance I test drove for a day each were totally quick, but the build quality wasn't the best. Supercharger network is incredible on the long trip I did, but nearest one from me is 60 miles, don't often drive that far.

Very objective review and focus on most of the important points. One minor point that I think is important is that all the settings from steering wheel column, seats, mirrors, and especially the air vents are all electronic, because the model 3 was designed to be a self driving car with automatic user profile detection. A future that the Polestar did not inspire to reach.

So if switch driver, the position of the steering wheel does not change automatically? I feel like going backwards in time if I were to trade in my model 3 for the polestar 2

Put the deposit down on the Polestar Feb 19 but got bored waiting (childish I know) and bought the Tesla 3P - no regrets and build quality issues over exaggerated imo- I was lucky though, got mine on 30/09/19 and qualified for government grant of £3500 at that time bringing nett cost down to under £51k.

Good to see 2 EVs being reviewed. Perhaps another perspective is which o me is better for UK trade deal as world peace?

I think Tesla managed to prove that, it is a reliable car. The others need long time to prove the same. I would go for the Tesla it least it is very well known to all by now.

I drive a Tesla Model 3P and have 2 x 240 km round trips for work each week. Like many people I am working more from home. Although there is a supercharger within 10 km I do 90% of my charging at home - rooftop solar and off-peak grid. Costs are minimal. To be fair to the Polestar 2 many owners will be able to do that, so superchargers are not a deal maker/ breaker for people who don't do regular long trips. Prospective buyers should understand this. The Model 3 is the best car I have owned but the Polestar looks like an excellent proposition and well priced without the performance extras.

Checked Polestar delivery available in June and it's June 26th. Only concern I have Is how readily is the charging network and a high speed (150w) one. I'm sure you can't use the Tesla supercharge

Had a M3P for 1 year now, would not have anything else. The superchargers are the game changer and it is such fun to drive. I like the uncluttered interior. One of the best features is not having to use the brake pedal driving across town.

So great video & thanks for posting it The Polestar 2 looks like a traditional ICE car to me! I drive a Tesla Model 3 & I wouldn’t trade it in for the PS2, but I’m happy that Polestar is coming on board with an electric vehicle, but I don’t think it will be comparable to the Tesla model cars! So if you’re not driving a Tesla you simply don’t understand how really great they are, as there’s simply nothing on the road that is comparable to them at this moment in time & the fact that it’s the minimalist design of the interior set up that I like & it took mere minutes for me to get use to the center display screen & now I’m not bothered at all! So I don’t know why we need a display screen behind the steering wheel like traditional cars, because this isn’t a traditional car & it will soon be fully autonomous, so what do I care about watching the road when the car is doing the driving? So I do hope Tesla gives us the 360° view in the future & I hope that they also incorporate the augmented reality I do like that, the other thing I would like for Tesla to do is to make the car more interactive like we interact with Siri or Alexa! Those are some features I hopeTesla incorporates in the future, I also want a car with an attitude & not just on the road, but when I imagine if I asked my car to do something & it asked me why? How many times do you change the position of your steering wheel?

Definitely gonna give the P2 a test drive when it’s available. M3 still wins for me because the experience is just unlike anything else. I’ve literally driven my M3 more than triple how much I drove my previous car in the same period. Any reason to drive and I’m there.

Minor issue : "Everything is on the touch screen" : no... ! There are 2 controls, each 3 way on the steering wheel that are not labelled. These are context sensitive buttons which means they have multiple different actions which actually make things easier. The default is auto-pilot control and sound volume/voice commands. Of course, you see they have no labels , but how many people actually read the tiny print on their steering wheel controls in other cars when you use them - you know where they are. I personally don't think the Tesla 3 is ideal with regard to screen in front of you, but like any car, I am used to it now after 1000 miles of driving and just "obvious".

What a great review, at last the charging is also addressed, for anyone wanting to use an EV just as they used their ICE car there is only one option......the Tesla. 100,000 UK miles over 6 years in my Model S P85 and I use a Zero SRF motorbike as well so get to try the public charging. Public charging 50:50 its working. Tesla 100%. You want to drive local and you have a home charger, go for it otherwise Tesla.

5:26 The price difference is inflated by the Polestar just making the cut for the government discount and the Tesla doesn't. What if you're perfectly happy with the non-performance versions of these two cars? It's not that they're slow or anything. They both apply for the discount I assume?

When will these car comparison KZfaq hosts realize that not having buttons and knob adjustments ARE NOT negatives for us owners. In fact it's a major positive for this Model Y owner. The sleek minimalistic design was a major selling point for me. I did not was a traditional car interior design with a battery pack, which is what all of the other EV brands have been offering. This includes Polestar 2. So adding time in your videos to point out that these cars have knobs and buttons unlike a Tesla just reminds us of why we bought a Tesla in the first place. So thanks for making the difference known, but know that we could care less for those cars, their buttons, knobs and manual steering wheel adjustments.

Had a model 3 for 7 days : I couldn’t cope without the driver instrument dash. Bought an A6 . For that reason alone - hope to get a Ploestar in the future

Now that the Polestar 2 has come out and other EV's are coming soon, the model 3 is needing a facelift.

Not the first review to point out the manual adjust of the steering column as an advantage, but how so? If you are the only drive of the car then you will only ever adjust once, so who cares how it is adjusted? If you have multiple drivers, then you have to adjust all the time, but because the Tesla does that electronically, it means steering column, and mirrors are auto-adjusted to whichever driver happens to be in the car (along with pretty much every other preference from air con and radio settings, to drive dynamics). So - how is manual adjustment of steering column or wing mirrors and advantage please?

Having driven these cars extensively for over a week I find your review to be quite biased in favor of the Tesla. Polestar's interior and exterior quality is superior. The Polestar is, and most would agree, the best looking car. For everyday driving the Polestar is the easiest to get in and out of, it's easier to load in and out of, you sit considerably higher; which is a plus. The Tesla drives better and the comfort is noticably better. The charging network is huge here in Norway, which is why we'll probably go with the Tesla in the end.

The Polestar descriptions sounds like what we're seeing in the Model Y compared to the Model 3.

Only minor thing i'd disagree with is regarding the space in the back: the seating position is lower in the Model3 so you have a bit more head space, but it's way less comfortable to sit in. Just look at the seating position (4:39) and the angle at which the legs are forced to bend due to the lower seat.

Those frameless mirrors are cool, but given the importance of aerodynamics, particularly for electric cars, how do they keep optimal air flow if the whole mirror assembly moves. I know it seems a minor thing, but mirrors are reasonably important for drag coefficient - e.g. that Honda-e claims a 6% drag reduction by replacing them with cameras.

Fair review. One has to wonder though how well will polestar battery packs degrade in time...

Nice review. I am glad there are more choices of EV vehicles coming available, as competition is always a good thing for consumers. I own a Tesla model Y and really like it, and at this moment Tesla is the clear winner for me. I feel Tesla has worked out the bugs in battery charging, charging speed and software, not to mention the charging infrastructure available. Yes they do have some issues, but i feel most EV cars coming to market are going to have growing pains that Tesla had already experienced and worked out. I do think polestar 2 is a solid EV, and if Tesla did not exist, I would most certainly buy one. However, Tesla does exist, and is the superior car at the moment.

Looking to the left in the Tesla to see your speed is easier than looking down because you can use your peripheral vision.

In all of my previous ICEV, to set my driving position, I set the seat forward and back, adjust the angle of the seat, lumbar... then adjust the steering wheel and mirrors. When all is set, I CAN'T see my speed on the road.... the steering wheel is blocking my view, so I have to adjust something out of my preferred position to see it. In my LEAF, I have a speed higher up and centered... no problem like the old Civics. With my Model 3, there's no problem. Once I have cruise set, I don't need to see my speed..and when I hit TACC, I have it adjusted to 5 km over the speed limit... One swipe of the right button, and it's up 5 kph...one click it goes up one. "Set speed 119" and the speed goes to that speed. :D "Set temperature 20 C" and it goes there. You didn't cover the voice command possibilities of the Model 3. How does the Polestar compare?

Well Tesla needs some competition. My wife hated the Tesla because of the screen, and no tactile controls. No-one in the UK is handy with a wrench, but I am pretty nifty with a spanner. Thanks for a good review, I would consider the Polestar.

The breaks of the model 3 might be better the first time, but if you do the same test over you’ll see the polestar 2 is much more consistent in breaking time.

honestly the two cars are so close together that Im just glad theres competition. you're likely fine with either one, so pick based on personal preference. Tesla should not develop into a monopoly.

The real competitor is the Long Range, but for it's real non-arctic use, I'd get a Standard Range+. Lighter, rear wheel drive drives better. Spend the savings on FSD and entertainment pack and then some.

Fair review. As a long standing fan of Swedish cars my heart lusts after the Polestar, but I’d buy a Tesla - although I’d wait for the model Y for better practicality.

A fair review. I totally agree with the result. Volvo cannot do suspensions. As Volvo owner I should know.

I test drove a Model 3 last year, my hope was to get my wife warmed up for it but not only it didn't convince her it actually disappointed me. Sure the acceleration is a neat party trick but useless for >95% of my time driving in urban areas but it felt claustrophobic, width and length of the model 3 are within an inch of my current petrol car but the model 3 felt much smaller inside. I think I'll give the polestar 2 a try as soon the pandemic permits it but on I think the VW id.4 will have a better chance of convincing myself and my partner.

Can’t say I agree on everything here... but isn’t it a bit “easy” to “skip” the new way to operate main functions through Google assistant in the PS2? 🤔 And just say you’ve got “voice control”... 🤷🏻‍♂️

Polestar on design, interior and 'HMI' (the interface and displays). Tesla on engineering. If Tesla upped their design and got more European they'd close a clear opportunity for other car makers.

Really excited to take a road trip with autopilot and the supercharger network.

Two critical things missed here. If you have sat in the rear of a Tesla model 3 then you will find that the extra headroom comes at the cost of a terrible seat angle - your thighs are unsupported and it is intolerable after 30 minutes or so. The headroom is less in the Polestar, but if you are 6 feet or less you will be fine - more than 6 feet and it is not going to be comfortable as you will need to adopt a slightly slumped position. Hence both are compromised on rear comfort. The second thing is the “dog issue” - if you have a dog then you need the hatch (and don’t forget the split/fold rear seats in the Polestar for those trips to the recycling centre). I have no idea why Tesla chose to go with a boot instead of a hatch - the model Y will fix that, but it is not available in the UK until 2022. I have a lot of experience of the UK charging network as I have had an i3 pure EV (not REX) for the last 3 years - and yes it is a mess but not unusable - and Polestar have teamed up with all of the major players to provide a unified access service (which was missed in the review - this was not playing fair What Car). However since I do 98% of my charging at home it really isn’t as big a deal as everyone makes out but I agree that Tesla definitely do this better. I will be buying the Polestar....being able to transport the dog is a “killer feature”

Polestar 2 for me. The interior is leagues ahead and more practical. Not having to do everything via a giant ugly screen is a big plus. Convenience of a hatchback and the unmatchable safety features and record of what is essentially a Volvo product. Do I need to accelerate at warp speed. No.

I would get the TM3 long range over the PS2 despite the PS2’s better looks IMO. The reason is the charging network, and also lower charging cost on Teslas charging network compared to other charging networks, at least here in Norway. Tesla even tells you how many chargers are in use or available on each location the map. I don’t think other charging networks do that yet(?). The back seat headroom and leg space (despite the seat being a bit low) is better and the bigger trunk space is also important to me. I’ve tried the TM3 and driving it felt really nice. Not tried the Polestar. The TM3 still seems like the EV with most value at this pricepoint.

One you can order and get in a month. The other still hasn't started commercial production yet. So which is better, usually one that actually exists in more than just a prototype form.

Measuring electric cars using 0 to 60 mph is outdated.Electric cars should be measured per kilowatt per hour. Electric cars aren’t like home appliances relying on someone else to provide the power. Tesla build quality may not match Volvo/ China with well over a 100 years of car manufacturing between them. But we’re they are years ahead, is they built a car and provided they mean to power it. Manufacturers need to invest in charging networks like Tesla

I have owned both cars, firstly the M3, now the P2. Here is my view: Polestar Likes: - Looks fab especially with ‘Thunder’ colour choice. - Lovely, quality interior. - Solid, ‘cocoon’ like driving experience (see below). - Strong regen ‘braking’ allowing single pedal drive. - Comfortable for rear passengers - Dash screen with map - Frameless door mirrors - 360 camera view Dislikes: - Lacks Tesla overall ‘Fun factor’. - Despite it’s power, lack of engaged driving experience. Odd accelerator pedal feel: harder to press and not smooth responsive increase in power like the Tesla. The feel of speed is less, the steering is not so crisp and you are more remote from the outside. P2 is just, well like driving a car. - Need more driver adjustment in Semi-auto drive mode ie. pointless so adaptive cruise only useful option. - No ability to watch movies/tv and if there was, the screen is too small for it anyway. Without having watched a movie in a Tesla you would likely think, why would you want to do that?! - Downloadable game completely rubbish compared to Tesla driving car game. - No Fireplace mode. Perfect after a chilly Open Water swim! - No satellite google maps view. - No graphical display of anticipated energy use when navigating to a destination. - No in-car ability to set charging times. - Old fashioned non-flush exterior door handles, cheap old style interior handles and air vents. - No ability to remotely move car forward or back with the key or phone. Useful to gain access to boot if parked close to garage door or in a tight parking space. - Poor rear view. So to sum up : The Polestar is a gorgeous car inside & out, It looks and feels the business! But it’s just a car. In contrast, the Tesla transforms driving from an otherwise mundane A-B necessity into a fun, engaging experience. It made me actually look forward to my daily commute, something which just can’t be overstated.
