For all the teens watching this who are interested in law enforcement and are debating it, look to see if your city has an "Police Department Explorers Program". It might be under a different name, but the Explorers Program is essentially like a a police academy for minors. The one that I was in was for ages 14 - 20. I am 18, currently getting my B.S in Criminology with an emphasis in victimology, and I am also apart of the Explorers Program in my city. I really recommend it to anyone who is interested because you genuinely learn a lot that will be super beneficial for the academy if you do decide to pursue this career. We cover everything from pedestrian stops, felony stops, penal codes, D.V calls, we do PT, and we go to competitions that help us social network with other cities. I've always wanted to work in law enforcement since I was a little girl so I've tried to do everything possible to help me prepare. I wish anyone who took the time to read this good luck on your journey, and remember, we got this!!

October 19 Written and Video exam (Passed) November 3 Oral board (Passed) January 10th contacted by background Detective February 6th Met with background Detective March 17th Polygraph (Passed) Received a conditional offer pending the final tests Now waiting for the last two steps the psychological evaluation and the Medical exam. Now with the pandemic going on it hasn't slowed my personal hiring process down so far but the police academy has shut down for a month so I'm not sure whats going to go on in the coming weeks but I'm just working out at home hoping I can finish my process soon and hit the academy. Love all the great info!

I can't wait to keep going on my journey towards joining the police. I was the same as you where I never wanted to be a cop at first. I have a theatre performance degree and wanted to do special effects makeup. I didn't decide to join the police until I dated a cop and started learning more about it. Turned out that it's something that I would really love to do! My first step was getting my eyes fixed so I wouldn't be medically disqualified (I was practically blind). It's been exactly a month today since my surgery and I am very happy. Now it's time to get in shape. Luckily, I have people on the job willing to help me out as much as they can. Love your videos! This really helped honestly because my wife’s brother is a police officer and I’m working my hardest to become an officer myself in my small town, the only thing holding me back is the push ups, I pass everything else with flying colors so I’m constantly working out to increase my push ups!

I’m 14. My parents called the police on me to take me to the behavioral health center because I wouldn’t go. I was crying and freaking myself out and having panic attacks. I’ve dealt with the police many times. One time, I overdosed at school and there was an officer who took me to the hospital and stayed with me for six hours. He didn’t have to and he did. I’m so thankful for him. I have a lot of respect for police officers because of the way I’ve been treated by them. The PD helped me more than the mental health nurses who are the ones who are meant to calm you down. The PD go above and beyond. And that’s what I want to do. I’ve had a couple drug charges, but I still want to be in law enforcement. Not all cops are angels, and I know that, but a lot are sent from god. I hope I can get to be the officer that helps someone someday because I know I will never forget S. A. (The initials of my favorite officer that stayed with me) my respect to all of you. I hope to join you someday.

In NYPD Academy for Police Officer, is 6 months Monday through Friday they have two sets of tour the day tour and the 4 by aka 3pm to 11 something you are assigned to that tour and your payroll start every 2 weeks and your Probation Period is 2 years, then towards the end of Academy prior to graduating and field you get a "dream sheet" where you choose what Command you want if you live in the 5 Borough you will not be allowed to work in your Residential Command (Precinct,Transit or housing) but you can choose the Borough you live in. For School Safety Agent is Monday-Friday 7am to 3pm 18 weeks same Academy.

Hi Stephanie! This was a very informational video, thank you. Wry much for making it. One question I have is for the academy, was there any math related portion? If so was it difficult? Because math is one of my weak subjects.

In NYC the NYPD Academy for Police Officer is 6 months and your pay begin when you enter and School Safety Agent is 18 weeks and you get paid as well.

What kept me in the academy was “I was not trying to lose my job over not being Prepared”.... 6mths two days...

If your goal is to get into the academy from the written, to the PT, to the background, etc, etc, some cities are completely different in requirements for sit-ups, pushups, climbing walls, etc. Some areas, you can catch a break in age or gender, others are like Nope! Same job, same requirements. Another idea (this may vary too), but join the reserves. Yes, it’s more or less a volunteer, but the requirements for PT aren’t as strict, it’s easy to slide in a hired spot if you desire, and you can see if the job is truly for you.

Can you talk about the suits you had to wear at the academy and the items you would take?

I did too!!! I was always so torn between beauty school and criminal justice. Im still torn honestly. Im finishing up my degree and still unsure!

I am studying Criminology for law enforcement and I know that a degree or certificate in Criminology isn’t necessary because the counselor told me. However I feel like studying criminology will be helpful in the long run.

I was a Police Officer back in the mid 90s. I left after 8 years on the road because of the politics working in a small town and I wanted to pursue something in Aviation, which I did. Move ahead now I will turn 50 next month and agencies are hurting for people because it's hard to recruit people to do a Job where the media consistently looks for ways to attack LE, then socially LEOs are not respected the way they used to be, and in some cases leadership that does not back up their Officers caving to political pressure. Having said all of that I miss it every day and would love to do it again. Problem is it requires me going through the entire academy again and at age 50 I worry I will be physically able to do it. I found your channel not long ago and I appreciate your positive outlook on the job. There are some good things about being LEO and it can be very rewarding if you are in it for the right reasons.

This is interesting and very helpful! In SC, you have to be hired by a department and they kind of "sponsor" you through the academy. You can't pay your way, and the academy is funded by traffic tickets from the state lol

I had to watch your video before i had to comment. I am wanting to be a police officer and go through my basic training im also wanting to join the military(marines) once i am 21. My birthday is coming up in june. And im just wanting to know more of the standards that get you qualified and understand what it means for you as your own person to think that this encourages yourself and how this would push others to do the same because I am down to earth to try it.

I'm a high school dropout GED recipient. Now I work at one of the best trained, most prostegious, depts in my state. Second only to State Police and honestly were trained better than them imo. If you want it you have to take it, good video.

I’ll tell you what I hate, no dislike! Training and falling asleep 💤 with certain instructors. I love 💙 firearms, munitions and chemical spray! Oh, I forgot hands on with baton training and defense combat 👍

In chicago i ended up choosing the school right since they require a degree minimal an associates in criminal justice i took the written test they will issue a study guide and that study guide is the test after that was the power test and drug test , and trust me after those three stages it became long wait but totally worth it. Really interesting video btw about other process in other cities if you see this question how big is your department how long does it take you to be out the probationary period ( me was 8 months )

Any advice on passing EVOC and firearms portion of the academy?

I could not eat in my academy I felt like puking everyday. My agency failed people faster then they could blink so stressful. It's sad when u can be fired so quickly but some people just quit. All the background stress to just quit I did not understand that

I would really like to get in. I have a lazy eye though, so my vision is not correctable to 20/20. Still trying anyway though.

When she said that the instructors will say mean things to build you up I was just like... ok check that for a head start. I have 2 brothers and a cousin who say some pretty nasty stuff after awhile you get used to it and learn not to take it to heart
